2:56 into the second overtime of Game 2, Marcus Johansson created a turnover in the Bruins’ offensive zone and hit up fellow Swede Nicklas Backstrom with a pass. Backstrom knew what to do with it.
Backy skated the puck to the slot, snapped a shot through Andrew Ference, and beat Tim Thomas over his shoulder. Caps win 2-1!
Video is below the jump.
This was Backstrom’s second career playoff overtime goal — his first came as the capper on a hat trick in a 6-5 win against the Habs on April 17, 2010 (video here) — and his second goal of the season since sitting out 40 games due to a Rene Bourque elbow.
Maybe George McPhee was right when he spoke to the media on February 27th, while Backstrom was still suffering concussion symptoms: “We can make the playoffs with this team. And if he comes back, we can beat anybody in this conference.”
After this huge win, anything’s possible.
The Capitals will now return to DC on Monday and try to take a 2-1 series lead in front of their red-cladded fans. Let’s go Caps!
