Alex Ovechkin’s Girlfriend Is Wearing A Ring

Photos via Ovechkin’s Twitter account.

Caps fans have gotten used to the annual summer tradition of negative rumors about Alex Ovechkinhe’s fat, he’s partying, he’s an international spy. This year, the rumors have been suspiciously tame, and we’ve got a new one that’s downright adorable.

Over the weekend, Ovechkin tweeted out photos of his girlfriend Maria Kirilenko and himself at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Oh sorry, did we say “girlfriend”?

Hm, is that what I think that is? Can we zoom in a little bit?

Maria is most definitely wearing a ring on her left hand ring finger. As I’m sure everyone knows, this has a pretty significant meaning.

The Greeks believed the fire in the diamond reflected the constant flame of love. For millions of people around the world, the mystery and magic, the beauty and romance shining out from diamond engagement rings says all the heart feels but words can not express. Placing the engagement ring on the third finger of the left hand, dates back to the early Egyptian belief that the Vena Amors, vein of love, runs directly from the heart to the tip of the fourth finger.

Here’s a close-up of another one of the photos Ovechkin tweeted out this weekend.

We have absolutely nothing concrete on this, we’re so deep into speculation that we’re straddling the line of hockey fanfiction, but all we are saying is that there is a ring on the ring finger of the girl that Ovechkin is dating.

Draw your own conclusions.

Doubt it! Russians were wedding and engagement rings on the right hand.

  • From what I know, Russians don’t give engagement rings and wear their wedding bands on the right hand. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

But it could be a ring from Alex all the same. 🙂

  • ENHANCE!!!

Is Ovechkin Orthodox enough that he/they would wear both engagement and wedding bands on the RIGHT hand? It’s very common in Eastern European countries, Russia too.

  • Dummy

Your concrete is still wet as Russians wear the wedding rings on their right hands……

  • I’m wondering which hand Russians wear their engagement/wedding rings on. DOES ANYONE KNOW?

  • Here’s a pic of her when she was engaged to someone else…wearing the engagement ring on the right hand:

  • Different Maria. It could be that as they now live in the U.S., they’re following U.S. customs. If they are engaged, I wish them the best of luck.

  • Errr. Sorry, I haven’t had coffee. But that still supports the Russians wearing them on the other hand.

Russians generally do not wear engagement rings at all. The wedding rings are traditionally simple yellow gold bands and are worn on the ring finger of the RIGHT hand. However Ovi and his girl might be more open to the American way of doing things, although I doubt that’s an engagement ring. I’m Russian and wear a ring on that finger on the right hand, none of the Russians think I’m engaged or married.

  • Alex

They’re both Very much Orthodox 🙂 And yes, the rings are worn on the right hand.

  • tracycaps

the wedding ring/engagement ring is worn on the left hand if they are Orthodox Christians. Nice.

  • tracycaps

doh, I should have said, worn on the right hand…different than what we normally see.

  • Thanks, Dummy. I enjoyed the metaphor.

so much knowledge out here about my culture. Impressive. Caps fans got that edumacation…:))

  • bellka

You are right. Traditionally, Russians wear the ring on the right hand and it is not in tradition to wear an engagement ring…

  • bellka

If he were engaged, we would all have known without having to guess… not that many things this guy keeps private.

  • Frank

This is Ovi we’re talking about here, even if that is an engagement ring who’s to say she’s HIS fiancee?

  • they wear theirs on the right. So to her, she’s wearing what American woman would wear as their right hand ring.

  • phew, almost lost hope on some Russian/Irish babies!
