After a few days of national team play and a new silver trophy for Ovi, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom returned to Dynamo Moscow to show off the chemistry that makes them one of the most dangerous duos on the planet. On Wednesday, Backstrom had two points and his brother from another mother had one goal in Dynamo’s 4-3 loss to Sibir.
On Friday, Dynamo was back at it again, this time facing Dmitry Orlov’s former team, Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Backstrom and Ovechkin both scored again, assisting on each other’s goals. Ovi finished with a goal and two assists. Backstrom scored the game-winning goal and notched two points. Dynamo won 4-2.
Video of their goals are below. And you’re going to want to see Ovechkin’s.
Ovechkin’s first assist is at the 45 second mark. Backstrom’s goal (assisted by Ovi) is at the 5:50 mark. Ovechkin’s goal (assisted by Nicky) is at the 6:55 mark. Also, Ovi playing some great defense is at 6:40.
As the second period wound down, Dynamo and Metallurg were tied at two despite a huge shot advantage for the white and blue. With less than a minute left and Dynamo on a power play, Ovechkin teased a big shot and then slid a well-placed cross-ice pass to Backstrom, who calmly wristed the puck into the net. It was the second time in a week Ovechkin unselfishly fed a teammate to set up an easy goal. Dynamo took a one-goal lead into the third period.
But Ovi wasn’t done. Twelve minutes into the third, Ovechkin took a pass from Nick Backstrom at the blue line. The Capitals captain then maneuvered around three Novokuznetsk players, breaking in alone on goalie Alexander Lazushin. Ovechkin, choosing to stay on his backhand, then lifted the puck over Lazushin’s pads.
Dynamo would win 4-2. Alex Ovechkin is now on a 12-game point streak.
