Ovi and Mojo Collide

Tuesday morning, the Washington Capitals scrimmaged the Reading Royals at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, winning in a nail biter by a score of 8-0. During the first period of the game, Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson violently collided into one another. Since the game wasn’t broadcast online, we had to rely on tweets and blurry photos to try to imagine what happened. We all thought the worst.

Thankfully, both players ended up being okay, but after investigating CSN’s video of the hit, we don’t know how.

Alex Ovechkin lay on the ice in pain

On Tuesday, the Washington Capitals scrimmaged their ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. With a shortened training camp, the Caps need every opportunity to get into game shape. But with the regular season just days away they also don’t want to get hurt, and Washington had a bit of a scare on that front.

As Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson were skating in the neutral zone, they collided brutally near center ice. Both players laid on the ice in pain and were slow to get up.

While Johansson managed to stay in the game, the Capitals’ captain, who was bleeding from the chin, had to leave the ice for repairs.

Michal Neuvirth holds up his new mask that has Olie Kolzig painted on the side

Over the summer, Swedish airbrush artist Dave Gunnarsson released photos of the new goalie mask he painted for Michal Neuvirth. It was a thing of beauty and something all Capitals fans could appreciate.

One side of the mask features images of Neuvirth’s hometown along with a portrait image of Czech goaltending great Jiří Holeček. On the other side there’s an action shot of Olie Kolzig, the franchise’s leader in wins, juxtaposed with the old Capitals dome logo and stars.

The gesture was not lost on Kolzig, now an associate goaltending coach for the Capitals and technically one of Neuvirth’s coaches.
