My thoughts on Holtby are that he benefited immensely from Hunter's shot blocking defense in last season's playoffs. Of the shots that were not blocked by the defense, many were relatively easy saves (and sometimes the difficulty was embellished by his style and Doc Emrick's dramatic play-by-play). You can't just look at the save percentage. To his credit, he wasn't giving many goals away either.

I think you can safely lay blame on his teammates for his first two games of this season. Then he had a good outing against the Flyers (or you could argue that the Flyers just had a bad outing) and a bad game against the Pens.

I guess my point is I think too much weight is placed on his playoff run because committing to that level of defense and shot blocking will help any goalie. I also wouldn't put too much weight on the games we've seen this season so far either, since he's really only had one bad game where he's been at fault. We just really don't know how good he is at this level yet, and he's still quite young.

Games like these are what goalies; both old and young learn from. Holtby is smart, and talented. With the help of Prior and Kolzig; someone of his talent / potential should (hopefully) and he will grow and learn from this. He feels worse then all of us (fans) do and Holts knows the organization needs him to play better.

Have faith people. You have to hit bottom sometimes before it gets better.

Go Caps!
