On Thursday night the New York Islanders played
the Washington Capitals. An incident occurred
just after John Tavares was denied in a shootout attempt by Braden Holtby. As
you can see Joel Ward while celebrating this event, struck Martin Erat in
the head. This blind-sided hit was in
direct violation of Rule 48 – Illegal Check
    to the Head which states:

    “A hit resulting in contact
with an opponent’s head where the head is targeted and the principal point of
contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should
have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the
opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or
simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body
check was avoidable, can be considered.”

    As the
video clearly shows Joel Ward Made no attempt to avoid contact with the
head and the head is the principal point of contact. Also Martin Erat made no sudden moves that
would put him in a more vulnerable position.

Joel Ward has no history of dangerous plays and
regarding this the NHL Department of Player Safety has decided to suspend Joel
    Ward for 2 games.

In addition, Matthew Perreault will receive an indefinite
    suspension for being a maniac
when the team wins as shown in the
