During the Caps-Oilers line brawl in the third period, Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates had a hall-of-fame meltdown on the bench. After hearing what the penalties were from officials, Oates flashed his teeth like a predator trying to scare its prey. He also cursed.

What on earth had Oatesy so mad?

Thanks to a question from NBC Washington’s Adam Vingan, we now know why. Oates thought Ovechkin’s hit, which started the melee, was legal.

“My first view of it — you know, it’s in the corner, that’s a tough corner for me — I thought the guy had the puck as Ovi hit him,” Oates explained during his post-game press conference. “And clearly, you know, those guys are on the ice to stir it up, which we understand. I thought that maybe the referee made a mistake there. He thought it was interference. He thought the puck had been long gone.”

Judging by this GIF from SB Nation, the puck was indeed, uh, long gone.

However, long live the #OatesFace.

“#Oatesface”…is this officially A Thing yet?

I’m not so sure about the “long gone” part. Maybe this Gif is speeded up a bit, but I noticed Brown dish the puck behind his own net just an instant before he got Ovied™; from the looks of things it was too late for Ovie. to stop or turn away…a great hit.

Long gone? It look like about 0.1 second between puck on stick and Ovi on douchebag.

Looked like it could have gone either way. I personally don’t think it’s a boarding call based on the angles taken by both skaters, Brown in particular. Ovechkin probably figured he would continue up the boards but he did in fact turn at the last second. A sneaky move by a man who looks like a train robber in his league photo…

    I think it should be

I can’t tell, but it definitely looks like he just beat the puck across the boards .1 seconds before Machine destroyed him. If so (the GIF is hard to read and I didn’t see the game myself), then Oates is mad for a reason. That’s a legal time to hit.

    sorry for double-post… disqusfail

You can find the video here – http://www.csnwashington.com/hockey-washington-capitals/talk/ovechkin-stirs-oilers-hit-behind.

To me it doesn’t look like it should have been an interference call.. maybe borderline boarding. The guy had basically just gotten rid of the puck and Ovi was within the 1 second or so they allow for a hit.

if a split second is long gone….Brown saw OV coming and got rid of th epuck like a hot potato

Totally clean check in the 90′s. Today, maybe not. That’s sad when a coach can’t say “finish your checks” to the players anymore.

The Oilers player (I don’t know his name, #13) actually has the puck on his stick at the start of the last GIF. Just watch the Oiler’s player’s stick and you’ll see it. He passes it then immediately Ovie hits him.
