holtby-goalie-fight

Wut. (GIF by welshhockeyfan)

The Washington Capitals destroyed the Philadelphia Flyers. Once Joel Ward scored his hat-trick goal in the third period, the Caps’ 7th of the game, shit got out of hand.

Wayne Simmonds dropped his gloves with Tom Wilson, and that set everything off. In its culmination, Philly goalie Ray Emery skated the length of the ice to pick a fight with Braden Holtby. Emery, a noted goalie pugilist, punched Holtby in the back of the head a few times.

The Holtbeast loved it though. A few minutes after the bout, head athletic trainer Greg Smith came out to check on the Caps goalie. He gave him a big smile.

I guess we found out what Emery is good at because he sucks at everything else

  • Chris Cerullo

Bush league from Emery. Absolutely awful. Horrid job by St. Laurent as well.

  • William

That wasn’t a fight, more of an assault

  • Bob

that ref should be suspended, how do you let a fight happen when one guy clearly doesnt want to go? I felt bad for the flyers but now i am pretty happy with the outcome

  • Dave

    a) why did the Caps not come in to defend Holtby? That was before the whole team was occupied in fighting.
    b) how is that a penalty against Holtby?? Would he literally have to not defend himself to avoid a fighting penalty?

  • Robert

Emery is washed up. He deserves to be playing for that crap team.

  • jatt19

Because the entire team was fighting their flyers counterpart

  • Peej

Chick from CSN reported Latta came to defend Holtby but was told to back off by the ref.

  • Dave

Not at first. It started with Wilson and Simmonds when Emery started to skate ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE ICE to challenge Holtby. The other fights started afterward.

I just rewound the game and checked. The goalie fight is the second fight.

  • Dave

    Ah. Thanks.

  • Zach Evans

The fact that the philly CSN announcers don’t even think anything less of the situation is horrible in it’s own. “We can’t win so but we need the fire and this is the Flyers saying we need to show up for work with fire!” What a joke.

  • Chris Cerullo

Keith Jones is a prick. He really is an idiot.

  • KillEmry

Players like Emery are the reason people are debating taking fighting out of hockey. Get this classless piece of garbage out of the league. He doesn’t deserve to play with the world’s best

  • KillEmry
  • Chris Cerullo

Emery was just given 3rd star by the Philly media. .733 save %. Stay classy.

  • Matt

How they work for the same company as Joe B is beyond me.

  • MuzzMuzzington

Time to change the job description where officials don’t break up fights and just leave it for the linesmen.

There’s fighting and there’s mugging. This was the latter.

  • MuzzMuzzington

Third man in rule. Complete garbage rule in cases like this.

  • Dave

    Thanks. That makes sense too.

The ref was trying to stop it before it started, but Emery kept pursuing. He should get a multiple game suspension, if the league wants to appear serious about player safety. Not that a multiple game suspension would matter for a scrub like Emery…

  • Michael Reschly

Now living out of the DC area, I had to catch the game on NHL Network (the CSN PHL feed). Man, that was disgusting. “Good job by Emery” or something similar, over and over again.

  • OlietheGoalie

This is Philadelphia. I live for watching their crappy sports team blow it. F the Flyers. The only person I’ve ever liked is Hextall.

  • Fencedin

He held him by the back of the jersey. If you’re going to fight, fight like a man.

  • jatt19

According to Chuck Gormley, Ray Emery on holtby telling emery he didn’t want to fight ‘I said, basically, protect yourself. He didn’t really have much of a choice.’”

  • Owen Johnson

Just a meme I made in like 2 minutes. Holtby, like a bawss.

  • Michael Reschly

Serious question: is blatant instigation by a goalie a suspendable offense? Is (things that can get you a suspension) governed by the CBA?

  • R.O’B.

Man i bet Alan May would have killed to be out there.

  • Adam Schwager

Emery should actually be suspended for this instagation. Ridiculous.

  • Adam Schwager

46.2 Aggressor – The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.

A player must be deemed the aggressor when he has clearly won the fight but he continues throwing and landing punches in a further attempt to inflict punishment and/or injury on his opponent who is no longer in a position to defend himself.

A player who is deemed to be the aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

A player who is deemed to be the aggressor of an altercation will have this recorded as an aggressor of an altercation for statistical and suspension purposes.

A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, amajor penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

    So yes

  • Eileen Dailey Lucas

I said that exact same thing to my son! lol

  • Michael Reschly

Does anyone have video of the CSNW feed? I’m out of town and had to watch the Philly feed. Curious what JoeB/Locker had to say.

  • Michael Reschly
  • VeggieTart

He’s looking up at the scoreboard and smiling, like, I may have lost that fight, but I’m going to win the game.

  • VeggieTart

And how do you wave off a guy who wants to come to the aid of a teammate?

  • Eddie

Holtby looks like Casey Jones in his after-fight grin picture.

  • Catherine__M

Gross. Seriously. That’s all I got at this time of night.

Four more matchups (home-and-home in mid-December, and another one in early March)…buckle up.

I was at the game tonight. You know what I think it was, though? It was the crowd that drove them to this entire scrum. The Philly fans were literally cheering for the Capitals, mocking their own team, booing from the get-go when the second period started, chanting against their players. Their own fans were not supporting them and in fact turned against them and I would think that does something collectively to a team from a psychological standpoint.
Moral of the store, Philly sports fan are vile, disgusting, primitive assholes.

  • Akhibrass

Oh Please, it was a fight. Either take fighting out of the game or let them fight. Stop trying to “criminalize” a rather mundane hockey fight. Players get assaulted by other players all the time.

  • Akhibrass

Just stop, this was a typical hockey fight. So he went looking for a fight? So what, that’s how most fights in hockey start anyway. They start when one guy pushes or shoves another guy. Stop being so limp dicked.

  • Akhibrass

After that first punch Holtby was neither defenseless nor unwilling.

  • giacfsp

Aren’t the stars usually handed out by one member of the media? Whoever named Emery a star tonight should have that voting privilege revoked, and maybe his season credential.

Emery, on the other hand, should be suspended at least, and preferably cut from the team. He is a disgrace to the NHL, and even to the Flyers.

  • Josh

What the flyers needed to get going.

  • JuicyJ

The dude was on the floor with both gloves on while Emery punched him in the back of the head….HERPDERP.

  • Peej

Thank you for the photographic evidence!

  • Steve A

No, it turned into an assault when Emery continued to wail away at the back of Holtby’s head when Holtby went down. Every hockey player knows that’s just wrong.

  • Steve A

    You’re an idiot.

  • Rhino40

All-in-all, this was (for me) a completely satisfying hockey game despite the absence of Ovi: Balanced scoring, crushing a hated rival in their own building, a hat trick for …Wardo?!?!…and the line brawl was a bonus whose stars for the Caps were (IMO) Oleksy and Urbom. I especially like how Holtby came up smiling and cool-as-a-cucumber afterward despite the (apparent) mugging by Emery. It was…like…Saskatchewan Holtby and the Temple of Goons (Can this be a shirt..Pleaeeease?) hahahahaha. #goaliefightsarethebestfights.

  • Rhino40

    This could be a Thing

  • Rhino40

I ‘m not 100%s sure, but from the commentary it sounded like May actually was this/close to actually coming out onto the ice.

Now, wouldn’t that have been something talked about for decades?

  • Rhino40

DISCLAIMER: First, I agree with you: Emery was 100% wrong–he probably should (and probably will) get a significant suspension for what he did.

I guess that, despite my belief that #goaliefightsarethebestfights, I need to stop and remember that:

    1) Goalie fights at the NHL level are rarely–if ever–the only bout on the card (so to speak); they are more often a side effect of other fights already in progress or–in this case–a line brawl.

    2) In such situations there are bound to be some players on both sides who are less interested in the fisticuffs than others. So how often do both goalies want to “go”? I personally don’t think any kind of meaningful statistical sample is even possible.

    3) In order for a goalie fight to even take place, at least one of the ‘keeps must leave not only his crease, but leave his zone completely. Hence the outrage over Emery skating “all the way over from his end to start this $#1+” is kind of belaboring the obvious.

    4) Goalie fights are rare, and a draw in a goalie fight is rarer still. The outcome could have been worse (think Brent Johnson on Rick DiPietro).

  • scrubversive

It’s all been said so many times from fans all over the league… but I have to vent for myself.

Fighting debate aside, if Emery isn’t suspended it’s a disgrace to the NHL for so many reasons. To anybody who condones that kind of brutality on the ice (I’m looking at you Filthadelphia TV commentators), go watch MMA or boxing where that is the point. Oh wait, at least there’s SPORTSMANSHIP in those sports. This is just a sore loser being a thug to hurt someone.

Also, BIG thanks to all the fans from other teams – including pens, flyers, rangers, etc – who are putting aside or rivalries and expressing their disgust for this travesty. Hockey fans banding together to support safety and sportsmanship in this game are part of the reason this is the coolest sport on earth.

  • Owen Johnson

    Condescending Holtby FTW

  • Brianne

A fight my ass, Emery even admitted that he asked Hotlby if he wanted to go, Holltby said no, and then he kept going anyway. That is NOT a fight.

  • ughthebrain

The fans may suck, but the players are at WORK, if I acted like that at work I would be in jail. They are paid to act professional, and are held to a higher standard than some local beer league. There are little fights to help sell tickets, anything beyond that is assault.

  • Chip

“St.Laurent taking some heat for not stopping Emery-Holtby. Gotta think he backed away to make sure the benches weren’t about to clear…In hindsight, stopping the fight would have been right decision, but multiple fights going on…St.Laurent concerned with full-on mayhem.” – Darren Dreger.

I hadn’t thought of that at the time, but it makes sense. He should’ve done more to stop it, but my blame on St Laurent has gone down slightly.

  • HockeyDragon

My issue with Dreger’s quote is that St. Laurent wasn’t really paying attention to the other fights. He was staring right at Emery beating on Holtby. The primary reason the Caps wanted off their bench was to come defend their goalie; how could he not see that?

  • Joben

Would buy that shirt in a heartbeat

  • Chris

You know, Emery not getting suspended because there is no precedent in the rulebook is absolute bull. He left the crease which is against the rules, and is essentially a “bench” for the goalies. In the case of an goalie instigating a fight and leaving his crease it should be considered to be leaving the bench for the purpose of starting a fight which is an automatic suspension if I am correct. NHL to lazy to try and create some precedent because they don’t really care enough about player safety. Imagine if Holtby had been seriously injured. Nope can punish Emery for giving a player a concussion because the rules don’t say we can.

  • Chris

That excuse is bull, because there was ONE fight going on at the time. The goalie fight was the second one going on. The two other fights that happened where Urbom-Schenn and Lecavelier-Oleksy, which you can clearly see not fighting during the length of the Holtby-Emery fight. You can clearly see Schenn’s sucker punch during the NHL.com video of the fight.
