Swedish artist David Gunnarsson released photos of the newest mask he finished painting this morning. Lo and behold, it’s for Washington Capitals starting goaltender Braden Holtby. Gunnarsson has entitled it “Number 70 of the Capitals.” The mask is stylized to go with the Caps’ third jerseys, the same vintage sweaters that they wore during the Winter Classic in 2011.

Gunnarsson, in his very odd/excitable dialect, walked us through the story behind Holtby’s new bucket on his Facebook page.

It was very exciting to create this old school piece. I came up with the design an early summer morning. The goal was a design that delivers in all angles.

The whole design is built on Capitals third uniform. On a distance the design is a clean classic design in total sync with the uniform, and the closer you come #Holtby ´s artwork it is transforming into a full-blown tribute to the Capital city of America.

I just love to create details, and the american bald eagles painted in this #Washington #Capitals design is the key to explore the design.

This is the second new mask Holtby will wear this season. He debuted the other one, which features a jailed eagle with the words “Do not feed the animal,” in September.

There is a feature here that might not have been intended, but does suggest “old school.” The way the eagle logos are positioned on the side of the helmet, it creates the impression that it has “fins” like 1950’s/1960’s cars.

If Holts really wants to go old school he’ll switch to a cage à la Hašek/Osgood

What an awesome design and layout. Really requires second and third takes. Look at all the Eagles!

    This mask absolutely screams “‘Merica”

The eagle inside an eagle concept is pretty sweet. The left-side eagle’s like a Sauron-esque reminder that the Holtbeast sees you coming glove-side.

It’s actually an eagle inside an eagle inside an eagle.

A million times better than his current one, which he should ditch immediately.

Yo dawg, I heard you like eagles….So I took an eagle and put it inside an eagle, inside an eagle, so you can save bald eagles while you eagle.

    Clean and classic-looking.

Looks like it might just scare away the pucks, can’t mess with the eagle.

Shouldn’t the eagles face the other direction in other words “into battle” like a tattoo? The eagle is a strong animal that should be facing toward the action not away. I know its a nit-pick but any little bit of strong symbolism can make a great looking mask that much better.
