During Sunday’s 4-1 win over the New York Rangers, CSN’s Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin put forward another #CapitalsTalk question (ugh, #lamehashtag):  What’s your favorite hockey movie?

If you ask me, there are only three options, and they fall precisely in this order: Sudden Death (that Penguin fight scene always slays me), Slapshot (Go Bruce!), and Miracle (again!).

In the third period, Beninati presented some of his favorite response tweets. RMNB reader Nick P.’s response was just bizarre.

Wait, what? There’s a hockey scene in The Tooth Fairy?

[Checks YouTube. Searches. Searches some more. Find this.]

“You can’t handle the tooth!” I’m so embarrassed for The Rock watching this.

Great. Now go back to up to that Vine and unmute it. You’ll hear what I call broadcasting excellence. Joe B. asks the viewers, “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?” And while he does, Locker laughs uncontrollably.

This is my favorite Joe B. quote of the year. I have prepared the following reasons:

  1. Joe B knows wrestling. We now have even more in common.
  2. I’m imagining Joe B. saying this with his eyebrow up and some sunglasses on.
  3. The silly responses remind us that Joe B. and Locker don’t take themselves too seriously, which is part of why we love them so very much.

In conclusion, Joe B. rules and I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed.

Respectful disagreement- Goon is in the discussion over Miracle.
respectful agreement with the rest of the post and of course RMNB in general

    Here’s my rebuttal

Yeah, my best friend swears by goon. I have yet to see it.

I’ll stick with Slapshot as the best movie, followed by Miracle.

Beat me to it. Goon is fantastic. Slapshot is for old people. Go ahead and tell me I don’t know the finer points of hockey, because I feel no shame.

I remember seeing Goat on TV one of the last times Raw was at Verizon Center. I’m surprised he didn’t start any chants.

D2: knuckle puck, “Eating ice cream with the enemy”. ’nuff said

Slapshot #1. Goon #2. Miracle #3 (it ranks low because it’s high on Disney Cheese Factor).

    That photoshop is absolutely priceless.

Jay Baruchel disqualifies Goon. God he’s annoying in that movie. Otherwise its awesome.

    Miracle, Mighty Ducks, Slaphot

I think slapshot is overrated….. The first half of the movie is hysterical, but the rest of it is just your average romance movie. Just the opinion of a youngling…..

  • supremeclientele44

no one is behind mystery, alaska? i thought that movie was pretty good.

  • Lindsay Ann

Um, you guys…. Youngblood? Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves and hockey.

  • Rhino40

My Top 3 picks (in no particular order):

Slapshot–this one is de rigeur viewing for anyone who loves Hockey

The Mighty Ducks–lots of fun despite the Disney silliness.

Goon–Jay Baruchel or no, this was fun too.

    Other Honorable Mentions:

    Miracle

    The Love Guru

    Youngblood

…and, of course my list of favourite hockey films could not be complete without …

    The Rhino Brothers

By the way, does anyone own (or know where I could buy) a copy of The Rocket (2005 Canadian Biopic about Maurice Richard)?

  • Rhino40

No, I won’t say that to you. I like both films for different reasons.
