With 33 seconds left in the third period, the Washington Capitals trailed the Tampa Bay Lighning 5-4. They needed a hero. Enter Alex Ovechkin, already with three goals to his name, to save the day. Again.

As John Carlson slid a cross-ice pass to Ovechkin near The Ovi Spot™, the Russian machine winded up with all his might and fired. He somehow found a hole next to Ben Bishop and tied the game.

Because a hat trick is cool and all, but four goals is so much cooler.

Perhaps John Walton’s radio call of the goal captured the excitement best:

But it’s Alex Ovechkin’s celebration on video that concerns us now. Over one of Joe Beninati’s best-ever goal calls, Ovechkin just loses his dang mind celebrating.

First, the Caps captain took a big leap into the air, nearly head-butting the Verizon Center jumbotron. (Okay, not quite, but he jumped pretty freaking high.) Next, he dove belly-first on the ice, going for a swim into neutral. Finally, Ovi needed a buddy for a Hockey Hug. And there was John Carlson, arms wide open.

Here’s another look.

Then the Caps pig-pile.

This was Alex Ovechkin’s third four-goal game.

The last time he did it was January 31, 2008, when the Capitals took on the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. This was the game where Ovi got bloodied, and responded by turning into a God.

A year earlier, Ovechkin recorded his first quattro, notching four against the Ottawa Senators on December 29, 2007.

Ovi added a tally in both games for five-point showings.

With his insane performance on Tuesday, Ovi looks certain to capture the Rocket Richard trophy. He has scored 26 goals in 29 games with a six-goal lead over Corey Perry and Alex Steen.

Ovi also took over the franchise lead in power-play goals from Peter Bondra and leapfrogged Paul Coffey, Dave Keon, Cam Neely, Pierre Larouche, Markus Naslund, and Tomas Sandstrom to take 88th overall on the NHL’s all-time goal scoring list.

He is only 28 years old.

What a night.

Bishop: One sad hockey player. A gif of him despondent should be shown every time OV scoars.

    Best John Walton call ever?

  • it’s up there with Knuble-Ward

Love the leap over the blue line. His joy for the game is infectious. Or contagious. Hell, it’s confectious!

I should point out that i would end up in traction if i attempted any part of that celebration. Hard to believe he also bumped into dudes hard and scored 4 goals before that too.

Anyone else notice Ray Emery at 2:19 of the Caps Sens video?

THE KING IS DEAD! That one wins it for me. The pent up tension from that series. Great end to the season. Oh, there were other games after that? I don’t know what you mean…

  • Owen Johnson

Totally didn’t realize how loud Joe B was on that call. Probably because I was just as loud.

I like the Game 7 Call against Boston. Good sh*t Caps!!

Also, I could watch that 3rd GIF all day. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA))))))) best. As Ovie would say 🙂

Seriously! Watching how many times Ovi is slammed into, knocked down and generally mugged makes me cringe. How he does what he does in spite of it is astounding.

“the Russian machine winded up with all his might and fired.”

    Wound up, guys. Wound up.

Think Erat still wants a trade? I wouldn’t want to leave the *building* let alone the team after a night like that!

Technically only a month between the Ottawa and Montreal games. And Montreal was at Verizon.

I believe that was Ovechkin’s first home hat trick.

  • Chip

holy crap that hit at :013 in the Habs video O_O

God I love Ovechkin. It’s amazing that people say Ovi doesn’t care. Pretty sure no one can ever doubt his love of the game after that goal #4 celebration.

  • Graham Dumas

Don Cherry can… well, he can do whatever he likes, I don’t care. I love Ovi’s excitement, whether for his own goals or those of his teammates. He’s out there and looks like he’s having fun. A lot of fun. That’s what this game is about.

  • Graham Dumas

No. No one notices Ray Emery unless he’s throwing punches or being a goon. Because Ray Emery is a nothing.

John screamed it best. Joe announced it best. Craig summarized it best:
“The fans here in Washington not sure what to throw on the ice now.”
    Pure jubilation.

  • aaron

i love these boys, lets hope they start clicking in april

  • Gersh21

I had been thinking the revitalized Ovi was more subdued in his goal celebrations. Then that happened.

  • rjn21

Great quote too in the Post: “It’s kind of hard situation but it’s good for our team, we come back, we stick together nobody scream at each other we stay as a group and we win the game. It’s huge.”
