As Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson made his way onto the ice this morning, he was treated to a bit of a surprise. His teammates gave him a rousing stick salute, a day after being named to the United States’ Olympic Hockey Team.

Carlson’s nomination was a bit of a surprise; it took a lot of hard work to play his way onto the roster.

That fact does not seem to be lost on his teammates.

As Carlson skated around the group, Goaltenders coach Olie Kolzig wielded his stick like a sword and raised it in salute. The rest of Carlson’s teammates slammed theirs loudly against the ice and cheer. Carly let out a big grin.

What a great moment.

Also great: Ovechkin’s perspective on making the Olympic team in general.

    “It’s an honor, it’s a privilege, it’s a special moment in your life….”

Nope. “It’s sick)))).” I love this guy. And of course, Carly too.

Any idea what number he is going to be? I was caught up in the excitement but if I remember correctly the jersey yesterday was a 4. Is that official? I want to make sure I’m accurate in the race to acquire one.

That Ovechkin grin at the end. I feel like he already knows he gets to hit John.

Should be continued tonight in Verizon. Carlson (and Faulk?) should be in starting lineups.

    I’m wondering if that’s (shaving cream)pie-in-the-face worthy…
