Erik Karlsson and Mike Green Hug During Scrum

You might want to turn the sound on. (Vine via @SeanGentille)

The imagery above has been making the rounds on Reddit and Twitter this morning. It’s so glorious that I figured I’d share it with you.

On Tuesday night, as Mikhail Grabovski got the claws out with Zach Smith and an angry Cory Conacher tried to literally separate Eric Fehr’s head from his torso, Erik Karlsson and a late-arriving Mike Green embraced each other at center ice like long-lost bros. Instead of getting involved in the fracas, the two offensive defenseman caught up and enjoyed their front row seats to some hockey carnage. Wouldn’t you?

While this moment is funny — especially in contrast to the violence happening behind them, I encourage you not to jump to any conclusions on each player’s toughness. Karlsson may be the only player in the history of hockey to successfully counter hit Alex Ovechkin and actually injure him. And while my lady friends tell me he should never take a punch to the face because he is so beautiful, Mike Green has had 15 career fights (including 3 in the NHL). Look at this man swing at Ilya Kovalchuk. That is malice!

Not every player on the ice has a settle to score in a scrum. And when they don’t, this is the adorable result.

Thanks to @gatalinka for first tweeting us the GIF.

no but seriously this cheers me up almost as much as Corgi gifs, something I thought previously IMPOSSIBLE

  • adam

    haha this is so confusing

  • Myan

HAHAHA that’s literally the best thing I’ve seen all day. Minus of course, the RMNB error page. I didn’t know such an awesome error page existed.

  • Myan

OMG I just turned the sound up. The music makes this 10x better than Bieber going to jail.

  • Simonezero

Took you long enough! Also, I would be down for a Karlsson acquisition, for multiple reasons.

Karlsson putting his head on Green’s shoulder #soadorbs

  • CapsFanBen

You all are fools. We are losing the game and on a losing streak and this is how Green acts? Get him out of this city NOW.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

Type literally anything after the slash on russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ and it’ll always be there for you to smile at.

  • Myan

Yeah, you’re totes right. He should have Shawn Thorntoned the shit out of his buddy.

  • Chris Cerullo

2nd JB reference in the comments in less than 3 days. My god what is happening.

  • OVECHKING

it looks like the other 4 guys on the ice are trying to kill each other… Those two wanted to sit down for a cup of tea. Green must have tried to ask Karlsson how to be a relevant offensive dman again… we all know playing defense is a lost cause.

  • CapsFanBen

Did I say he should have fought? No. But he should not be acting so silly when this team is playing very bad.

You’re totes a typical idiot of a Caps fan. As long as Ted has people like you to follow the team, the team will never be run the right way.

  • Myan

I actually thought he’s been playing pretty well over the last 2-3 weeks and I’m one of those who tore into him for allowing odd man OTGWG vs Carolina. I don’t see the point in him losing his cool and risk getting a penalty when we’re already down. We aren’t a team of goons. Anybody who wants Green to come at Karlsson swinging for no reason should head 2 hrs north and support the Flyers.

  • OVECHKING

Yes, Green has been playing better the last two weeks. Nothing to warrant / justify his salary nor excuse him for the last 3 overall terrible seasons he’s had. Including the start to this year which could be considered the worst stretch of his career.

No one is asking green to go and throw down with Karlsson. Karlsson is also too smart to fight green. Not to mention, Green will never fight again in his entire career post Kovlachuk beatdown he got. What we would like to see is green stay out of the scrum or go in and help out his guys. Not go and hug another player and smile. That’s not the emotion your team should show when you have lost 5 or 6 in a row, 10 of last 12 and are being shut out 2-0 at home with a few mins left to go in the game.

  • Myan

Well aren’t you a miserable barrel of fun? Lawls.

  • CapsFanBen

    THANK YOU

  • Ryan Glynn

It was love at first sight.

  • Myan

Green and Carlson led the team in shots vs Ottawa and he skated his heart out every shift so I’m going to argue that it’s unfair to characterize his attitude and competitive drive based on a friendly gesture with a guy he clearly knows off the ice. Imagine how much of a dick he’d look like if he snubbed Karlsson after his buddy gave him a smile and went in for a hug. Winning is their job but at the end of the day, hockey is a freaking game. Relax and enjoy it.

  • Myan

    You’re totes welcome :)

  • Myan

You always have the best gifs on hand. Thanks, guy!

  • OVECHKING

Leading the team in shots is grounds for “strong playing your heart out” now? How do you know Green and Karlsson are acquainted off the ice? What evidence is there to suggest this other than two wusses on the ice coming together to have a friendly chat while their teammates are battling it out? One guy has an excuse as his team is up 2 goals on the road and completely dominating the game. The other? Not so much. Hell, Karlsson laid out TWO massive checks on caps players, how come Green didn’t use this opportunity to exact revenge for those hits?

“hockey is a freaking game”.. .why do people say that in response to any critical comment about a certain player? “Relax and Enjoy” watching your team which has a generational talent being wasted on their roster? I think I’ll pass. People who just treat this “as a game” should not be commenting afterwards about how certian players played with heart and passion. Cause clearly you don’t care about that stuff. “its just a game” to you.

  • Barrett

Is this the first time you’ve ever watched hockey? This happens in every scrum of every game.

  • Myan

Meh. To each their own. Have a nice day :)

  • OVECHKING

People come together smiling and hugging while the other 8 players on the ice are fighting it out? Please, this might be my first time watching hockey, but you haven’t ever watched a game in your life. There is no rational way other than being a ‘rock the red’ type to justify what green did given the situation his team was in, to go and hug/smile it out with karlsson. But I’ll give you the opportunity to do it because I know you are one of those people.

  • Barrett

Did you seriously just want Mike Green to cheap shot Erick Karlsson with a “revenge hit” for putting two clean checks on opposing players? That’s the crap that needs to get out of hockey.

  • Barrett

Did “rock the red” exist in 1991 when I watch my first games at the Capital Centre?

  • OVECHKING

    Are you incapable of reading?

“Green didn’t use this opportunity to exact revenge for those hits?”

That could be something as simple as a face wash with a glove or wrestling.

Does that imply cheap shot? My god. Responding to you might make me lose some iq.

  • Barrett

A face wash is not “exacting revenge”.

“exacting revenge” for those two clean hits would have been those players taking Karlsson’s number and giving him a clean hit right back.

  • OVECHKING

Could have also attempted to dropped the gloves or even begin a wrestling match to initiate a fight. Clean hit or not, any big hit initiates immediate responses from opposing teams. That’s the current culture of the NHL. Agree with it or not (I dont agree with it).

  • Myan

Barrett. Do not get drawn into the land of crazies. Let’s unroll our eyes and walk away.

  • Barrett

The land of crazies is has been heavily populated in the last couple of weeks!

  • Barrett

    1. That’s not Mike Green’s role on the team.
    2. Yes, it deserves a response in the form a good, clean hit to the individual who levied the initial hit.
    3. Why didn’t Grabovski claw out Karlsson’s eyes instead of Zach Smith?
    4. That is the exact opposite of the culture in today’s NHL – thank you NHL Rule 46.11 Instigator, which was created to curb players (aka Goons) from assaulting players who played within the rules.
    5. Most players disregard this rule when the hit is questionable (clean vs. dirty) or if the victim suffers and injury.

  • Myan

I really hope these two are between the ages of 9 and 16. I mean, who hates being a decent human being & existentialism?

  • OVECHKING

The real immature ones here are you. I’m sorry for not being able to dumb myself down to your level of make believe and everything is going to be alright. I mean you’ve posted a few comments here telling us that you are leaving and yet here you are still babbling away like someone who has no idea what they are talking about and just wants to make a point to show how lost they are. Keep rocking the red and keep on trolling.

  • Myan

Face the facts: this is Biebs’ world and we’re just living in it.

  • MojoAlmost

This is absolutely pathetic and indicative of what this team has become. Mike Green should be stripped of his A for this. Look up Mike Green. The score is 2-0 and your team is losing. Look down Mike Green. You’re rocking the red tonight. This is a HOME GAME. This scrum is happening in front of YOUR HOME FANS. I don’t know what your relationship is to Erik Karlsson. Maybe you’re buddies off the ice and that’s fine. No need to snuff out your homie. But take a look around you. Rip off your A and give it to Eric Fehr who actually
shows heart and did something to break up that 2 on 1. Jeez, what am I saying. You obviously don’t know shit about defending a 2 on 1.
Grabovski puts a hard, clean hit on that dbag Smith then gets jumped from behind by Smith and Neil in front of our bench. He had every right to try gouging that man’s eyes out and toss his helmet as he headed back to the locker room. He’s a free agent after this season. He’s a helluva player and I for one would love to see him locked up with a long-term contract. But how do you think he’s gonna feel about sticking around after seeing this reaction from his teammate and assistant captain when we’ve lost 14 of our last 19 games? Oleksy is gone. Erskine is scratched. What the hell is going on when Connor freaking Carrick is the only dman around willing to drop the gloves for his team?
Woooo saaahhhh… rant over. I guess all I’m saying is: I miss you Matt Hendricks :(

  • ErskSMASH

well said, teams just going thru the motions.. very little heart, grabo showed some.. hope the rest of the team was taking notes…#bringbackhendy

  • Jake Ettawakapow

LOL that’s awesome. Why is everyone so butthurt?

  • prut

Grabo is awesome, but he does not have the right to try gouging out Smith’s eyes out. I think he’s not gonna feel any different about sticking around because his assistant captain didn’t punch someone because his team is losing

  • MojoAlmost

Not saying he needed to throw any punches. Just saying he should knock off the pda with our opponents while we’re losing and two of our guys are in a scrum with three of theirs. You see Fehr didn’t throw any punches, but he was quick to jump in and pull their guys off of Grabo.

  • Stephen

Ian, just start having dead links when caps are in a state like they are in now (8 game slides). Everyone needs a pick-me-up
