mike-green-head-slams-into-boards

The Washington Capitals stunk in the first period of their road game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, but the damage was just one goal against. And then Mike Green went down.

Columbus’ Boone Jenner skated with Mike Green behind the Capitals net. Jenner shoved Green off balance as they crossed the red line and Green crashed awkwardly into the corner boards. That wasn’t so bad, but Jenner came crashing in after him, smearing Green’s head and neck into the glass.

Green laid like a pile of laundry on the ice for a good long moment before returning to the bench. After a short skate during a timeout, Green retreated for the locker room.

This is a disaster.

I thought the counter hit there before the puck even hit the boards was the dirty part of the play. Thoughts?

  • Rob W.

he’ll be out a year at least

  • JH

Unfortunate but not sure i see anything dirty. Maybe interference. Or if his skates left the ice on the check on the boards?

  • Jack Conness

I hope he is okay. This is just scarier with his previous concussion issues. He has been playing real well lately. He can’t suffer a setback here.

  • guest

he leaves his feet to make the second hit, should’ve been a penalty

  • Todd N

so they gave up and stopped playing?? 4-0? on how many shots? 15?? geez

  • Simonezero

I don’t know if it looked worse than it was but my stomach did a nasty flip. I’ve been a bit hard on Green lately, the Cupcake, but I want this to be nothing and him be back tomorrow night.

  • VeggieTart

How was that not a penalty? I hope Shanaban throws the book at him.

  • MuzzMuzzington

I like how he makes no effort to play the puck, doesn’t even look at it. Was dead set on hitting Green the whole time.

  • Mikal

He was already vulnerable against the boards and Jenner chose to leave the ice to hit him high.
Hopefully Wilson teaches Jennner a lesson at some point in the future.

Looks like a concussion to me….. His head snaps around two to three times in that sequence. We’re f’ed if this is it for green for the season. On the bright side that frees up the six million we need to trade barber and Burkovsky for Miller… Let’s get to it GMGM. If anyone needs me I’ll be in the fetal position on the floor

  • Brackaphobia

Boone Jenner? What kind of a name is that anyway?

  • Chris Cerullo

If both Green and Grabo are out for an extended period of time I have little to no faith in this team doing much from here on out.

  • Shaun Phillips

Only good thing out of this night: I had dubinsky on my fantasy team.

  • :/

    We don’t need Miller.

  • Christoffer Salo Salomonsson

Shanahan does not follow caps games.. if weber didnt get anything last game then this isnt gonna be anything..

  • Diller M

Sarcasm… Hence the last line of the post… I give up

  • Eric Schulz

I pretty much always assume you can dirty hit that Caps and get away with it all the time; it’s not illegal if it’s against us. Anybody hear the latest on Weber’s suspension for his two elbow-to-head hits from the previous game? I’d think it’s worth about 5 or 6 games minimum (previous history should push it up, since he had a history of targeting the head when he hit Backstrom… a previous incident that was less than 60 minutes prior, so that seems like it’d warrant HARSH penalty), so I’m guessing 0, and it’ll never get discussed, because nobody cares when it’s against us. Can somebody (please) prove me wrong?

I’ve been browsing the NHL site hoping to see a Mike Weber suspended article but to no avail. I hate stepping into the fan->sport conspiracy theory realm but, man, it seems like Shanaban comes down like he’s wielding Mjölnir to any Caps player with an infraction but not so much, if at all, to anyone committing said infraction against a Caps player. Hope Game Over is alright and was just kept out due to unnecessary risk in a one-sided game.

    sad, but evidently true

  • Shaun Phillips

And Fehr. Unfortunately, I had Holtby. :(
