Britt Bäckström, the 84-year-old grandmother of Nicklas Backstrom, gave a video interview earlier in the week to the small-town newspaper Östersundsposten later picked up by Aftonbladet. Her comments about her grandson are curious. “He’s gonna make a fool of himself [in Sochi],” Grandma Backstrom said, as translated by reader Magnus. “He’s been playing so bad. For a long time.”

Here’s one newsworthy thing (according to RMNB’s somewhat loose definition) that happened in the interview: Grandma Britt shared this baby photo of Nicklas Backstrom’s daughter, Haley.

Britt says of Haley, “She looks so much like Nicklas when he was born.”

I hope Ovi’s mom had nicer words for him…

  • She also says that she watches most of the caps game. Note that 7PM ET is 1AM local time in Sweden. Not so shabby for grandma.

RIght on Grandma. Slap ’em in the head and tell him to shoot more.

I hope she realizes her son is Nicklas Backstrom and NOT John Erskine

Ummm…I hope something got lost in translation.

    That’s what I’m saying

  • that phrase is banned from RMNB

  • Nathan

Hey, that phrase is legitimate and accurate…it didn’t write that movie (if that’s your problem with it).

Lets hope it is just reverse psycology she is using on Nicky, tells the whole world he is gonna make a fool out of himself, so then he has to prove grandma wrong!
(She also mentions that she is very worried about both nicky and his mom & dad because she believes someone is gonna blow the place up, and that she watches every game local time (1-2am depending on starting time) and also followed the juniors world championship, she knows & follows hockey)

  • Tadd

Well. She wishes Pär Mårts had sent the WCJ-team to Sochi instead. So I’m not signing the “knows hockey”-part.

Rätt skön tant ändå. Kollar man videon som svensk förstår man att där bara är kärlek bakom de till synes hårda orden.

The elderly were never ones to mince their words.

  • Matilda

Haha, yeah I guess that part might not be her best sign of knowledge. But still, pretty cool grandma who gets up at night to watch the games and all. Competetive lady who just wants Sweden to win.

Absolut, det är enkelt att läsa en översättning, eller bara en svensk artikel, och tro att hon är elak. Men hör man tonen på hennes röst förstår man at hon inte säger de för att vara elak.

Grandma Britt is awesome! I think she knows what Nicky is capable of, and wishes he would get to that level again. The way the Caps have played in some games this season I get sleepy too.
Sweden is still my pick to win gold with Backstrom having no small part in that.

Maybe they interviewed the Goalie Nick Backtrom’s grandmother.

Aftonbladet, notorious Swedish tabloid, published an own interview with Granny Backstrom last night, where she tries to get herself out of the missunderstanding that she thinks bad of her grandson.

    – What I said was that they [Washington Capitals] haven’t been doing very good as of late, not the he [in particular] was playing bad.
    – I didn’t mean to break him, Britt, who hasn’t watched the clip herself, says.
Have you gotten a lot of reactions of the quotes?
    – Yes, the phone has been ringing and I’ve been sad the whole day, since I heard about [the articles].
    Have you talked to Nicklas?
    – No, but I really hope he didn’t see the clip, if he has I’ll go crazy. I think you should write that I think he’s a really, really good hockeyplayer.
