Deep down, we’re all huge Teemu Selanne fans (even Peter). That’s why, even though John Carlson and the United States lost out on the bronze medal, seeing Selanne have one last hurrah in Sochi is one hell of a consolation prize.

Selanne scored two goals against the United States this morning and will leave Russia as the greatest Olympic scorer of all-time.

So in Selanne’s final year as a pro, let’s enjoy some photos and GIFs from his final Olympic game.

This crosby punk has made a habit throughout his career of running his mouth at the older superstar veterans of the previous generation. Anyone remember when he tried yapping up at Peter Forsberg and forsberg grabbed him by the neck and said “shut the f*** or i’ll kill you” (exaggeration)?

I’ve listened to about a dozen Teemu interviews during these Olympics, and what always comes up is how much he is enjoying himself. It’s been a tough season for him. He feels as though Bruce hasn’t given him the minutes he deserves. He’s had “many nights of disappointment”. With all due respect to Anze Kopitar, Teemu, of all the players in the Olympics, was the happiest to be there. He knew he would get to play first line minutes and power play again. He’s looked younger than he has in a long time. All that has had an effect on the team as well. Save for a few players being nervous in the first period against Canada, the team has been very loose and confident in its abilities (a striking contrast to, say, Russia). Much like how the players were winning for Jari Kurri in Nagano, according to Jori Lehterä, the players were playing for the three veterans in Teemu, Kimmo and Sami Salo. Much like Jari Kurri in 1998, Teemu held a speech before the bronze medal game, saying how it was going to be the last chance for a lot of players. Not just the veterans, but for some of the younger players as well, with uncertainty about future Olympic participation.

Teemu, the whole nation is crying with you.

For me as a finnish caps fan this post really warms my heart and restores my faith & loyalty to RMNB! ;) Thx guys! Because Selänne is really big in Finland at the moment, probably the best known and most respected athlete.

Thank you for posting this article with the excellent gifs. I was crying too much yesterday to read any blog and had to delete my recording of the game. Watching Teemu play and outskate guys half his age was pure joy to watch for this aging soul. So, thanks for saving the sweet moments of a heartbreaking game.
