almost-goal

Masochists: this one is for you. In the first period, Nicklas Backstrom thought he scored what looked to be goal number 13 on the year. Brooks Laich raised his arms in the air to celebrate.

But apparently that raincloud is still following Nicky around.

The official waved no goal, and play continued. The play was reviewed at the next whistle.

Here’s the ruling from the NHL:

At 14:59 of the first period in the Flyers/Capitals game, the Situation Room initiated video review to further examine a play at the Philadelphia net. Video review was inconclusive in determining if Nicklas Backstrom’s shot completely crossed the goal line. Therefore the referee’s call on the ice stands – no goal Washington.

No goal.

What do you guys think?

I dunno. It looked like maybe 1 mm wasn’t across. This is as close as it gets.

  • TowsonTrumpetGuy .

It was also weird to look at because the puck was ever so lifted in the air, which may be another reason we see white. It’s unfortunate but I have to agree with the ruling-I wouldn’t be able to definitively overturn the no-goal call on the ice.

I put this over on KK, but I think it’s the right call. With the way the puck is leaning, the top part of it can be hanging over the line. Inconclusive.

See, I don’t think the puck is in the air. It was spinning, but the bottom of the puck on the rotation was touching the ice. At the moment you see the white in the blown up image above, the part of the puck closest to the line is touching the ice and the other side is up off the ice. I say goal.

Goal. More white than a Denny’s in Utah.

I think its a good call, but I also think if the caps were down a goal they would of said good goal

For a billion dollar industry they obviously need to upgrade their video capabilities

I remember watching the NBC commentators trash talk how primitive video replay capabilities were in Sochi during the Olympics. I will sleep well tonight knowing our replay tech is superior…

Given dimensions of the puck and a measure of the visible angle. I think some geometrical calculations can verify the length and position of it’s hypothenuse.

…and I think Mike Murphy just sharpened his #2′s.

  • inconclusive

The puck is so obviously outside the goal crease,
And the goalie is turned around.

Is this really in question? I watched the game. I’ve seen the pictures and the slow mo. If that was Toews for the game winner it would’ve been a goal. If that were Selannes last point of his career. Goal. If that were Gretzkys 4th goal of a 4 goal game. Goal. This is absurd. Review is as conclusive as it gets. It’s not like the Caps have clinched a playoff spot and it doesn’t matter whether they win or not. In a close game like that, with a great effort, and a hard earned goal, that’s not a legitimate review, that’s robbery. Go Caps! Congrats on the goal Nicky! Sorry you got shafted again.
