Trade Deadline Bonanza Open Thread

Ryan Kesler: he's gonna move today, right?

Ryan Kesler: he’s gonna move today, right?

I was torn on whether or not we should do an open thread today. The Caps made some hugealicious moves yesterday, getting Dustin Penner for a fourth-round pick and sucking the Martin Erat out of the wound for assorted odds and ends.

But as of Wednesday morning, the Caps have $1.8M in salary cap space. They could still make moves. Plus, this open thread gives us all a chance to marvel at whatever dumb thing Holmgren does next and the continuing mass delusion that Ray Shero is improving his hockey team.

Updates below the jump and chaos in the comments. Let’s do it!

Laich-Backstrom-Ovi
Penner-Johansson-Brouwer
Chimera-Fehr-Ward
Volpatti-Beagle-Wilson

Thanks, everybody. Shutting this thread down now. Follow us to the Neuvy-Halak thread!

How am I supposed to do work when there’s an RMNB Trade Deadline Open Thread Productivity Killer Bonanza?

  • ct

Brooks Laich on the trade deadline: “You can get one bad apple in there that just stinks like a fart.”

  • Hawk31

We don’t need Brodeur. We need top end, puck moving D.

  • Rob W.

Alright George we had a good day yesterday, lets not do anything stupid today

  • Mike J

And players that stop creating terrible turnovers.

  • ct

Solid D-Man is what we need. Goaltending will be fine, it is what is in front of goaltending that hurts us. Make a move for Edler or Phillips in my opinion.

  • JenCo

I think a D acquisition is probably the way everyone is leaning today for the Caps. I just hope it’s not another deadline pull the rug out from under us move that leaves everyone scratching their head.

  • Owen Johnson

Why did you put in a gif of Dan Snyder?

  • Mike J

Asking price for Phillips was a first round pick and Ottawa reportedly offered him a 2 year contract now (which was what held him back before)

  • peach

Everything I have read points towards Washington actively looking for a veteran goalie. I have also read reports of insiders referring the Caps as desperate. Really hope George can find some way to get a good defensive minded player who can clear the net.

  • AloeCap

GMGM looked good yesterday. Would like to see him bring in a top 4 blueliner with some grit but maybe that is asking too much.

Oh, and a No from me on the Brodeur possibility. Not to knock Marty (hands down my favorite goalie since I got into hockey) but he’s getting up there. Besides, Holts has not been as bad as his stat line suggests. When your team is ranked 27th in shots allowed per game any goalie not named Ryan Miller is gonna look bad. I’d rather see Neuvy traded for a solid Dman and Gruby brought back up to DC than Marty rockin the red.

  • Brouwer Rangers

3 steps GMGM has got to follow today:

    http://i.imgur.com/EAmbT53.gif

  • Connor

How about N. Shultz from EDM for Nuevy and maybe the draft pick we got from Coyotes? Bring Grubs up to back up Holts. Send Carrick down, big john on waivers, bring Schmidt up. (Alzner,Carlson). (Shultz, Green). (Schmidt/Hillen, Orlov)

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

I think any goalie discussion is not about addressing a “need” per se, but rather needing to get rid of Neuvy but still keeping somebody solid as a #2. Brodeur I’d think is more of a #2 than Halak. Though they do have Grubauer too.

  • GreenMarine

    Arnott?

  • araporrada21

Defense ! Although Nuvy for Marty might work out given the cap space but I doubt Lou will let that one slide.

  • JenCo

I have so many windows on my computer open right now, it’s not even funny. Trade deadline ADD.

  • Rob W.

    i like it

  • Owen Johnson

Oh, the guy who kept calling the team he played for “they?”

  • Cthulu’s Alarm Clock

I don’t know if I’d say the Brodeur statement would make me break out the pitchforks & torches (unless Mike Milbury said it, but that goes for any time MIlbury opens his mouth), but it does further reinforce my opinion that most sports commentators (in just about every sport) have NO IDEA what they’re talking about about 90-95% of the time, and they’re just talking out of their ass

  • Lawrence

Please no Brodeur. I respect him, but he is not what this team needs. We still need more solid defense, so unless we trade today for a defenseman, I do not wanna see our names in the trade column.

  • ct

yeah, not going to happen for a 1st rounder. I really wanted MacDonald but oh well.

  • Rob W.

Also really hoping the rangers dont get St Louis and the pens dont get anybody

  • Jon Adams

    Exactly this please!

  • Lawrence

Nick Shultz isn’t really an upgrade from what we have though. And the name alone scares the shit outa me.

  • selftitled85

I agree please no Brodeur. Get us something we can work with. A d guy would be most ideal. Especially with Kuzya coming.

  • JenCo

I think Brodeur would want to go to a team with a higher percentage chance of making the playoffs. Caps are a “bubble” team at the moment. I’m sure he has a clause that would allow him to veto certain teams.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

Yeah, he picked a handful of teams where he’d like to go. SJS, LAK, etc. He won’t be coming to DC I betcha.

  • rapmadrob

When Arnott came to DC, the Modell’s near my house (that has about 4 different Capitals items in the whole store) got a shitload of Jason Arnott Shirts… Did they think the masses would be coming in for that?

  • peach

I get the feeling a lot of the big name players don’t have much of an interest in coming to DC right now. Washington really hasn’t made a good name for it’s self when transitioning over new players, IE Arnott, Volkoun, Erat. I’m sure there are other but I’m at work.

  • OlietheGoalie

I’m cautiously keeping Twitter open in the background at work today, hoping I don’t see any stupid McPhee trades. I want a D man, and nothing else. Well, a lot of money in my next paycheck too please.

  • Sara

    ^true story^ sheeesh….

  • Diller M

Please no goalies in. Only Goalies out.

  • Diller M

    Kuzya for Edler!

  • selftitled85

What would it take to land someone like Alexander Edler? He has 5 years remaining on his contract and owed 5 mil per.

  • ct

While we wait it out like Julie the Cat in net in the First two periods of the First game of Mighty Ducks D3…

What are your predictions of line combos tonight?

    Ovie-Backy-Penner
    Mojo-Laich-Brouwer
    Fehr-Ward-Chimera
    Beagle-Wilson-?

    Thoughts?

  • Andrew

    “I got dis”

  • Diller M

If you would like line 2 to surrender a multitude of shots that that would work. And that was definetly D2 the mighty ducks are back! Oh wait, mis read I see where you were going.

  • ct

I mean, that is why I said “thoughts”, come at me with some feedback not a put down.

  • Rob W.

a change of scenery wouldnt hurt, cant be easy playing for the Oilers

  • selftitled85

Blech. Please no. I want Edler but I really, really want Kuzya.

  • Diller M

Sure thing for a maybe? Obviously we would have to ship salary over as well but, I will always go for a sure thing.

  • Tom Martin

Second line of Fehr-Mojo-Brouwer, Laich as 3C, call up Wellman, Latta, etc for 4th line.

  • rapmadrob

Much like the Redskins and Capitals trades of the past, we’re gonna give a shitload of money to a big name guy (of 5 years ago) and he’s going to do nothing for the team. Then we’ll spend a couple years trying to fix it… only to do it again. Man, do I love being a DC sports fan!

  • Jonathan Garcia

I’m already part of two other open threads, so why not more? I’m not going to be productive anyway. How’s everyone doing?

  • Joey

the problem is getting a top-4 defenseman for less than $2.5M, assuming we’re using Neuvirth to obtain said defender.

  • Owen Johnson

I mean after his first couple games I liked him. Then I heard some interviews with him. “I think they are a good team. Their offense can score some goals.” I was all like, dude you play for “them,” its okay to say “us.”
Then I heard he was terrible in the locker room.

  • Mark Chaffer

10:35 AM with no trades and literally every reporter regurgitating the same names in “rumors”. IM SO BORED

  • JP Richardson

Thoughts on Tim Thomas? I am not sure I would want him, but he does have a SC Ring.

  • Diller M

    Put down? Really?

  • ct

I’m saying, come at me with some knowledge and legit feedback.

  • Jonathan Kenny

How about going after blueliner Mark Stuart in Winnipeg!?

  • Diller M

    Also…… D2>D3 What say you?

  • ct

I am a D1 guy, D3 is def the worst of them all. And Goldberg looks like a druggie now.

  • Jesse Morgan

Maybe i’m late to the party, but why the hell did Vancouver move Luongo? Did Florida need money to get to the cap floor? Tim Thomas is already there, and what they needed isn’t goaltending.

  • Diller M

Laich 1LW, Penner 2LW, Mojo 2C or Fehr 2RW and Brower bumped down, but hes been playing very well

  • Joey

So Penner is a swap for Erat’s roster spot. Hypothetically speaking, who swaps with Kuznetsov and becomes the 13th forward? Beagle? Chimera? Fehr?

  • Connor

Although it isn’t a home run, it adds above average depth. Where as either Shultz or Orlov would have to play 2nd line or 3rd. I’m happy with a defensive group where either Orlov or a guy like N. Shultz has to play 3rd line because we have 5 potential top 4 defenseman.

  • Lawrence

True, but tbh it’s not like our system/personnel is that much better defensively so we could possibly see the same Nick Shultz we see there, here.

  • selftitled85

As Austin Powers used to say…”I like to live dangerously.”

  • Owen Johnson

Does Tampa maybe wanna add “toughness?” Here, take Erskine and Volpatti.

  • katzistan

God no. No Halak, and no Thomas.

  • brad from the neck

his game stinks like a fart

  • Jonathan Garcia

It was more to end all the drama that had been going on for the better part of a few years. Thomas is only signed for this year, where Lou has like 1,000 years left on his K. I’m not saying it was a smart move, but it is what it is.

  • Amykins

I like this a lot. And thought the same thing about Brodeur. He is excellent – but getting up there. I really think we need to bring Gruby up to back up Holts.

  • Jonathan Garcia

Which means the trade deadline is officially upon us!

  • Dodge

I’d like to hear some thoughts on this. Would Neuvy + Erskine for Edler and a pick be out of the question? They’d save a little cap space while also supplementing Lack at the same time.

  • John

I want the Caps to get Kesler. Leader, 2-Way player. Grtty and can score. If not…then i dont want the Pens to get him.

  • JP Richardson

Carolina just recalled Peters. Maybe Ward to DC???

  • Joey Doukmetzian

Rusty is on the third pairing

  • Owen Johnson

Maybe so. But right now, that IS the 2nd line
    http://www2.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/lines/42/washington-capitals
And yeah, we only have 11 forwards

  • JP Richardson

MoJo moves down and Kuzy gets a shot on the top line for sure.

  • Tyler Greene

Halak is the only goalie that iv heard is available that I could live with. Edlers price will be too high with all his suitors. I like yesterday’s moves, plus Kuzya. Stand pat GMGM!

  • ct

Jamie McClenan is an idiot… The End

    DEAL WITH THIS HANDSOMENESS

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

If I were Caps GM today I’d be trading for two defenseman: if possible an up-and-coming shutdown guy (who is already established and could fit in the top-4, top-2) and a veteran rental who can play on the bottom pairing who doesn’t actually suck. I’d be very aggressive about making this happen – well minus trading Kuznetsov. Do not trade Kuznetsov, George! No, no, no!

  • Joey

yes, obviously Kuzya wouldnt be a 3rd or 4th liner, but you still have to scratch a forward that has played the majority of the season to clear up a roster spot

  • Jesse Morgan

Did you an Ian synchronize watches and click the post button at the same time?

  • Owen Johnson

You mean Cam Ward? No. Nonononononono.

  • John

Heard he was in contract extension talks

  • selftitled85

I don’t think so. I am sure most GM’s know how cruddy Erskine is. I would be fine with moving Neuvy but we would definitely have to sweeten that deal. Possibly move Orlov/Neuvy/Latta for him. I dunno.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

    WE ARE ALWAYS SYNCHRONIZED

  • Tom Martin

Can we get an example of each type of player?

  • JP Richardson

    or trade them today?

  • selftitled85

Does Klelsa fit that? At least the second d guy you were talking about? He is a lefty, crafty vet. He won’t offer much points wise but should do better than Carrick or Erskine.

  • Mark Chaffer
  • Jesse Morgan

Whatever they get, it was a good deal for CBJ. Gaborik is useless.

  • Jonathan Garcia

Marc Stuart fits the second point.

  • Joey

time to make our move on Slava Voynov

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

But LAK can make useless players excellent. SOMEHOW.

  • Jesse Morgan

    Man, that would be sexy

  • Evgeni James Goldlust

Oh please, no more veteran goalies GMGM. For the sake of all the scarfs in the world, please don’t screw up this team again.

  • Diller M

If you are Caps GM, wouldn’t Kuznetsov be a very attractive trade item? Unproven, immense upside, if we can get that top 4 guy, you wouldn’t do it? Is this just the Russophile in you, or do you really think he’s that legit.

  • Jonathan Garcia

My problem with Klesla is he’s fallen of a cliff (talent wise) in the last couple of years. He’s a fixer upper that could really help the team, or really hurt it. Just depends. I will say, that I used to like him a lot, and the fact they got what they did back for Erat is still pretty great.

  • Jesse Morgan

After the Caps I follow CBJ the most, and watch most of their games. He never fit in. Whatever their coach is selling, everyone bought it except for him.

  • Diller M

    Lol, sadly not me

  • Mark Chaffer

Oh good lord. The russian connection is stronk with this one

  • Diller M

One could argue we have fewer than 11…

  • selftitled85

See that would be a major issue if we were banking on him being something more than a 3rd pairing D guy. But considering the massive hole of despair we currently have on the 3rd pairing, even someone like a fixer-upper should play better….Right?????

At least that’s what I will tell myself…

  • nicoley-poley
  • Mark Chaffer

I retract my previous comment. I am now Hockeyyinsiderrr https://twitter.com/bjaffe/status/441239412320387073

  • Lawrence

Who are the 5 that you are counting? I only see Green, Alzner, and Carlson as top 4. And with those top 3, that leaves a major hole in the defense first category. I would love to get a defense vet for that slot. And maybe run orlov/erskine on the bot pairing for now, unless you can replace ersk somehow. Hillen seems like the odd man out to me. I would rather have orlov than hillen on that bottom pairing, as maybe orlov will eventually replace green if he gets traded or what not.

  • rapmadrob

I think a team only trades Kuznetsov or any top prospect if you’re already a top tier team and need that one vet that can push you to win the cup. We aren’t a team that team. We can’t keep getting rid of our prospects.

  • prut

no no no no no no no no no no

  • Jonathan Garcia

Haha, your guess is as good as mine. I guess we’ll just have to do the rational thing and let it play out. :kicks dirt:

  • Diller M

If Kuzya playes this year, he’s only got one year left, then we have to make a decision on him. I say, if we can get some legit young D help, ship him out. He’s another playmaker, we need scoarers.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    I’ve never seen D3.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

Unless the trade is for Forsberg back, moving Kuznetsov would be a mistake. Otherwise it’s just as likely we get another Erat who is a “proven upgrade” and get bounced out of the first round if we make it all, then we’re stuck with them. They can’t keep mortgaging the future.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

The team does not appear ready to challenge for a Cup in the immediate future, so I would not trade its best prospect – especially one that projects favorably in the NHL. I would maybe look to trade someone like – ugh – Mike Green – to a contender (if other teams value him and he can be immediately replaced with someone younger). He is starting to decline and they need to eventually replace him. They also do not have many shutdown guys in the pipe beyond Patrick Wey. I’d also be willing to part with some of the prospect D depth in the system – Carrick, Schmidt, and Bowey all play a similar game – and some of the glut of the forward depth on the team: Chimera, Ward, Brouwer, Johansson.

  • John

Things are about to explode. Like every year. The Dominos are about to fall

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

Who is the next best goal scorer on the Capitals? No, Ovi needs some help. Kuznetsov is more of a playmaker, but he could help make the first line more dynamic or be more of a shooter on the second. He’s very important to the future of this team, especially if he optimally develops.

    http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/ovi-noooo.png

  • Myan

I’m really hoping that Kesler doesn’t get traded to the Met…unless it’s to us but that’s a pipe dream.

  • Jonathan Garcia

Can we all just stop talking about Forsberg for two seconds? Dude has not looked good in the NHL games he’s played and is toiling in the AHL. Not to mention Nashville’s system is not conducive to scoring wingers. That’s all I’ll say. Hey look, it’s the trade deadline!

  • JenniferH

Not Chimera and Ward. In tandem, they have created so much of the positive that the Caps have had this season.

  • Mark Chaffer
  • Mark Chaffer

This is the craziest in a while, I think

  • Jesse Morgan

    No way that’s true, right?

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

I like them, but they make a lot of money, and if they can help fix the defense (long term), I would bite that bullet.

  • katzistan

Seriously, MSL to the Rangers? That is not fair.

  • Mark Chaffer

I have no idea. I’ll post whatever the final outcome is. Or, you know, isn’t.

  • Mark Chaffer

    UGH

  • selftitled85

I am waiting for the punchline to this joke…but I see nothing!

  • jerryc

how about cam ward? hes a good goalie that we can get. thoughts?

  • JenniferH

Laich and Brouwer make a lot of money too and they don’t got nothing on what Chimera and Ward create in my book. :grumpy me says: Chimmy/Wardo are gold!

  • Joey

have to imagine a third team is involved. no way thats just a straight-up trade. MSL could be a ranger but I feel like Callahan won’t go to TB

  • Mark Chaffer

The punchline is being a hockey fan in Florida

Edit: of a team not named the Solar Bears. How can you not love that

  • Mark Chaffer

Injured all the fucking time, not really that great anymore. Wait, sounds like a perfect fit.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

If the Caps were contending, why the hell not? But they aren’t – so they’d be giving away an asset for something they don’t need. Then on top of that they’d be pissing off the young goaltenders they do have and not optimally developing them. That’s how I look at it.

  • Owen Johnson

I’d rather have Neuvy and Holts. Also, hasn’t he been hurt constantly the last 2 years?

  • johnnymorte

What do you guys think of Klesla and can he actually fit in to the D core? He shoots left which means we’ve got an imbalance with Adam’s protocol.

  • JenniferH

This Trade Deadline Drama is KEELING me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jonathan Garcia

ANY goalie today should be stayed away from.

  • jerryc

yah that is true. the reason why i said it is because he won a cup in 06

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

I don’t think anyone would take Laich. He’s been forever injured and has a really bad contract. In a salary cap era, that’s one deal you don’t really get out of.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

I want another Karl Alzner and I want a veteran defenseman who drives play or, at the very least, isn’t a black hole: see Erskine, John.

Holy. Crap. Accent on the crap.

  • Mark Chaffer

    God fucking damnit. We’re doomed.

  • Owen Johnson

Oh he’s back in our division? Good. It’s not like he’s ever burned the Caps in the past.

  • JenniferH

Taking the opportunity to say that if this activity is anything like what Game Day Threads could be like if RMNB did set up a message board, it would be awesome. I for one would love it if you guys set one up as asked about in the Penner thread. I have long-time experience running/moderating/participating on them and when run well, they are a blast.

  • Owen Johnson

If we trade a bag of pucks and/or a ham sandwich to Carolina for Ward to back up Leggio in Hershey, I’d be all for it

  • Diller M

“especially if he optimally develops.” Exactly my point! We can’t be sure, I will always take a player further down the developmental pipeline with more NHL games under their belt. That having been said, I dont think I would trade him either, just arguing that you can’t label him an automatic non starter.

  • JenCo

Whoa, Tampa Bay and NY Rangers making moves.

  • C Breezy

Looks like the Rangers got St. Louis……..I hope you are not jinxing things.

  • Rob W.

NO NO NO NO NO, Words cannot express how much i hate the Rangers

  • JenniferH

True that. Well, at least he’s started producing more and playing better lately. And he sure is pretty. I mean, he’s no Braden, but he’s not bad on the eyes.

  • Jesse Morgan

That’s ridiculous. TBL gets a Callahan rental, and two decent draft picks, and gives up St. Louis. Seems to me NYR got completely hosed this go round.

  • selftitled85

    Wow. Poor Stamkos.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

Agreed. Emphasis on message board though. Disqus is a bit of a mess to wade through and keep up with.

  • Shawn Murphy

But I’ve got TPS reports to file! CMON GUYS

  • Heidi

Maybe he’ll get the C…not like that means much since they’ve shipped the last two out

  • Rhino40

mmmmm….yeah….if you could remember to get the cover sheets onto those fom now on….mmmm….yeah…that’d be great.

  • scrubversive

I love Kesler. But if he ends up in any of the three places that I heard were after him the other day (PIT, PHI, NYR), I would have to seriously reconsider my bromance.

As much as I’d like him to become WSH property, he’s got a full NTC and would prefer a team expected to go deep into the playoffs. I don’t think we would merit him waiving his NTC.

  • JenniferH

And is a bitch to open comments on half the time. I’m not a fan of the Disqus. Message Board DEFINITELY! “Would you like to reload?” is a question I’m so tired of seeing because 90% of the time it doesn’t matter because it still won’t open the freaking comments!

  • Mark Chaffer

    They got destroyed.

  • Jesse Morgan

Having to reload the page everytime sucks pretty hard on other message board systems. A chatroom works best, but lacks the permanence.

  • Connor

I’m giving Orlov the benefit of the doubt. I wouldn’t say he’s top 4 yet but he’s on the fence. That is why I’m proposing bringing in a guy like Nick Shultz who’s a 31 year old veteran. Trust me if we could get something better than Shultz I’m all for it, but the problem is the best trade bait we have is nuevirth because grubs is knocking on the door. Granted GMGM doesn’t make a colossal mistake and use Kuz, burakovsky, or barber as trade bait. Using nuevirth as trade bait you have to look at teams that need a goalie and are willing to give up a top 4D. EDM fits that role with N.Shultz

  • Connor

Rusty got sent to Hershey, he’s declining terrible don’t think we will see him in Washington

  • Connor

    Terribly

  • Myan

I used to live in Florida. There are actually a lot of hockey fans…surprisingly. That market is nowhere near large enough to properly support 2 teams though!

  • JenniferH

But once the page is done, you just move onto the next page and that previous page is done. With Disqus you have to reload over and over again. Actually with every other forum but message boards you have to reload the entire page to read all of it. Message Boards (and Livejournal type of forums) are the only forum that allows you to read previous pages without reloading the entire thread. That’s a huge plus.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

IP.Board has AJAX push comments. If you’re typing a reply or just have the thread open it does like Disqus does and says “1 new comment” with an option to show it without losing what you were typing. But unlike Disqus keeps it linear. IP.Board also has a chatroom too though.

  • Mark Chaffer

Oh I know there are. I was just making a bad joke.

  • JH

Look, this is basic algebra: Solid D-man acquisition + existing average cheap goalies = existing D (with Hillen back) + veteran, in-his-prime goalie acquisition. Either way, an upgrade. But the veteran goalie has to be in his prime – a Halak, for example. Brodeur would be a waste – past his prime.

  • Jesse Morgan

I’m tired of AJAX. Let’s get a #RMNB on IRC.

  • Tom Martin

    um, Nate Schmidt?

  • JenCo

What do guys think the Caps run needs to be to make the playoffs? 14-6? Or how many games can they afford to lose? They need to end there season with a run like they did last year.

  • Graham Dumas

Puck Daddy says St. Louis to Rags. %^#$%$!#^@$#!!!!

    https://twitter.com/LavoieRenaud/status/441246439583522816

  • Joey

which is why a plethora of roster moves could actually hurt them. too much reclamation of the system/trying to figure out line combos. its time they dont have. they just need to hit the ground running and make a run

  • Heidi

Verizon Center is located too close to the White House for Tim Thomas to join the Caps

  • Jesse Morgan

Yeah, but they gave up a first and second rounder for him!

  • Owen Johnson

We don’t need to really catch fire like we did last year. We’re only 1 point out of a playoff spot. The biggest obstacle is our super tough schedule.

If I’m Yzerman I am trying to flip Callahan again. Could end up with 4 great picks for St Louis.
3/5/14, 11:32 AM Should GMGM pursue this?

We have a lot of games against teams that are ahead of us in the standings or 1 point behind us though. 4 point swing games. Horrendously tough schedule to end the season.

  • JenCo

IF you believe in the proverbial 4 point swing game.

Wooooooow. Captain Callahan is out of New York? St Louis in…that’s…something.

Also we don’t hold any tie breakers. At this point it seems like they have to be one of the 3 metro teams to get it.

Any guesses who Laich is talking about in the Steinberg’s post:

“To be honest, there’s been one player that came in one time that just
rocked the boat a little bit and guys weren’t too sad when he moved on,”
Laich said. “His time was very brief, and if it went on for longer
maybe guys would have said something. I don’t know. It just wasn’t quite
the right fit for our locker room.”

  • Diller M

  • GetchaGrubbOn

This is a good team. Not an all-time team, and certainly not a Cup contender, but when you look at these lines (minus Volpatti) and ask yourself if this team plus competent goaltending should make the playoffs, the answer has to be yes. So why am I so pessimistic about it actually happening?

I don’t deny he is playing better, like I said I love the guy, when he’s playing with confidence, he’s a huge character guy in the locker room. I just think he is at best a second line player and for this season probably closer to a third line. Putting him with Alex Ovechkin and Backstrom I feel like is a waste of our first line talent. But maybe I am being overly critical.

  • Diller M

Think about if you busted your ass and did you job GREAT for your whole career, and when YOUR boss got to pick the best people in the country at doing your job and he left you out…. Would you want to work with him after that?

Caps still short in forwards for tonight’s crucial game, b/c Volpatti is no go. If trade will happen they would be even more shorter. Several players from Hershey should be in Philadelphia waiting a call.

We could probably trade him to the Leafs for a 1st round pick. #leafsgonnaleaf

  • Diller M

  • Mike Reppenhagen

Don’t know if it’s been done yet, but a lot of people are asking for examples of guys we might want. It’d be a huge cap ordeal that would mean losing an important forward, but Alex Edler is a name worth having. Shoots lefty, making him an excellent pairing for Green right now. Doesn’t generate a lot of offense but plays sound defense and is young enough to stick around.

The only thing is, he has 5 years left on a deal that gives him 5 mil a year. We’d have to make something happen to make that room for him immediately and long term. Neuvirth as part of the deal would help, obviously, but I don’t think Vancouver wants goal tending.

Another interesting name is Chris Butler from Calgary. Also shoots left and we almost have the room for him without any moves, but he’s a UFA end of the year. This trade would probably mean moving Erskine for a ham sandwich and not signing Penner or Grabovski going forward, since they all would be fighting for the same cash. So, if Kuzya’s ready to go (and is playing for center for us) this move makes them most sense in the very likely situation that we don’t make a deep playoff push this year, since Kuzya will eventually take on that top six role Grabo has now.

So, those are the best fits for us on the blue line right now in my mind. Klesla doesn’t make a ton of sense as that sixth defender because of his cap hit, but it could work out. I think the moves to make now are unloading a forward (which sadly, probably means Laich or Brouwer) alone with Neuvy for one of these guys, if the team takes it. Calgary might, because they’re terrible almost everywhere, but Vancouver’s team may look drastically different soon, so who knows what they want?

Also a name, though older than the other two, would Erhoff. He gets 4 million for a few years than his contract tanks, but we’d be married to him for 7 years. Buffalo is in sound rebuilding so this would mean someone young (Neuvy?) as well as picks, I’d guess. Maybe even someone like Mojo?

They have Kuznetsov, Barber, Burakovsky, and Stephenson. All will be occupying a roster spot as soon as 2015-2016. Burakovsky will be next season, Kuzy this season. MoJo is far from untouchable.

How many collective NHL games have those gents played? Which is to say Mojo is worth more since he has several years in with significant improvement each year and yet is still very young. Plus he has an Olympic medal!

  • Myan

Yeah I haven’t been too thrilled with his play this season either but I think he’s shown signs that he’s rebounding. I read something about him always feeling like the groin is flaring up to the point that he has to take maintenance days out of fear…if that’s the case, I wonder why the team doesn’t get him to talk to the team psychologist.

  • http://twitter.com/kat326 Rachel Cohen

I have an art show in a month that I really should be painting for.

  • Troy

I has to be a trial period for Laich since the 1st line thing is kind of a “flavor of the month” idea that is working. I see Penner up on the 1st line once Grabo comes back as 2C, and laich’s time in the top 6 is once again, over.

  • Jonathan Garcia

If I’ve learned anything from trade deadlines of past, it’s that GMGM is unpredictable.

  • Roman Z.

    I like turtles!

  • Troy

If GMGM is shopping Neuvirth instead of Holtby, nothing will happen that makes a “big” difference since Neuvy’s contract is higher than Holtby’s and GMGM will be slow to give away anyone else left on the roster.

  • DashingDave314

MoJo is worth more, which is why he should be traded. Plus he is far from irreplaceable. Burakovsky could easily do that next season. Just saying, I’d trade MoJo for a real defenseman in a heart beat.

  • Troy

read above, it matters if GMGM is gonna grow a pair and finally give up on some guys (mojo, laich, brouwer) that I think arguably should be being shopped. If he does that, then there will be noise, but its GMGM so i suppose nothing happens. Then again I didn’t expect the balls to go for Penner…

  • DashingDave314

There’s no reason for GMGM to shop Holtby. Every reason for him to shop Neuvirth.

  • peach

Yea not sure what the fix is for something like that. It seems that part if it is definitely mental. Specially since he pretty much never missed a game before this injury. My biggest concern with Brooks is that if he turns into Mike Green and we end up with another player with a long expensive contract who is in and out of the line up because of reoccurring injuries. Three months ago I would have said Brook is definitely going to be a buy out at the end of the season. I still think he is a definitely candidate for buyout but its really going to come down to, does he stay healthy for the rest of the season. If he goes down again and its the same groin problem I don’t think there is a shot in hell of us keeping him around.

  • Mike Reppenhagen

Yeah, Flames GM has said Smid pretty much isn’t going to move. Would need a monumental thing to get him, which is something we can’t really do.

  • Joey

Any veteran goaltender brought in would hurt Holtby’s confidence. If Neuvy is traded, it needs to be for a defenseman

Or picks. Where are the Islanders to do a panic goalie move when you need them?!

  • Joey

I dont think GMGM is interested in picks. He’s interested in a contending team for this year’s Stanley Cup run.

  • DashingDave314

Well Mike Milbury isn’t a GM anymore (sadly), so I don’t think anyone would give us a top 4 defenseman for Neuvirth.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

What’s the deadline for an AHL player getting called up? Is there one? Hershey is only a 1.5-2 hour drive from Philly. Puck drops at 8pm.

  • Chris Cerullo

It isn’t a talent wise thing. He was awesome in their 2012 run and was basically their playoff MVP. Jordan Nolan cheapshotted him this preseason and he hasn’t been the same since due to the concussion he received.

  • Jesse Morgan

I don’t have the ego for that kind of situation, so I’d probably just be like “Yeah, those guys are pretty good too.”

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

They’re at Norfolk Friday, so they should be home tonight. Tomorrow night though they’re in Boston so if they didn’t recall him Holtby would be going back-to-back again. Does Leaonhardt travel with the team? I know he does video something or other, but not sure if that’s a travelling gig.

  • Myan

When does our last buyout expire? Next CBA?

I long thought that we would use that buyout on Erat or Laich and now that Erat is out of the picture, there’s a good chance that the management could use it on Laich. Unless he turns into a point per game producer, I don’t see us being able to move his contract this summer…at least not without us having to retain some of his $4.5m cap hit.

Really good trade for PIT. I’m sad.

  • Troy

Hopefully nobody is willing to give up anything for him and in turn lowers everyone else’s value throughout the league.

  • Myan

They actually had a contract on the table with Weber but Nashville matched it so they had to settle for Luke Schenn…who they got by trading away JVR (hahaha)

  • yv

Pens , and LAK, are now over the cap. They have to do something to comply.

  • DashingDave314

He’s not trading Holtby because I’m pretty sure GMGM wants his job.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

Just about an hour left. If GMGM doesn’t bring in a defenseman, can we start drafting a unified open letter from the fans to Ted that either GMGM goes or else?

  • Troy

Meh, I’d give up Holtby for Halak. Grubauer will be better than both Neuvy and Holtby in 3 or so years anyways, and maybe Holtby needs a change of scenery just because the caps-Holtby marriage seems to be going rough for now.

  • Troy

Yes, agreed. Definitely would want him re-assessed if no move for a D-man can be made.

  • DashingDave314

Because trading a better goalie (Holtby) straight up for a worse or at best equal goalie who’s about to be a UFA (Halak) is a terrific way to improve your franchise. That’s the move that GMGM makes if he desperately wants to be fired.

  • a

Halak will be a cap before days end. Neuvy will no longer be a resident of DC. Holtby isnt going anywhere.

  • Troy

McPhee only has 2-3 years left to win as a cup winning window… I don’t want to become the Vancouver Canucks and that’s where they are headed since the fallout of past 09… Plus in 2 years are you willing to give Holtby a 2-3 mil a year contract? GMGM did to Neuvirth and it didn’t pay off at all.

  • Jesse Morgan

Penner is magic on the mic with John Walton.

  • DashingDave314

And how would trading our starting goalie for a goalie who’s about to be a UFA change that? It wouldn’t. In fact, it would probably make things a lot worse.

  • DashingDave314

I could live with Neuvirth for Halak. I’d be pissed… but at least that’s not a move that sets the Capitals back.

  • Troy

because our Starting goalie’s game isn’t worthy of a starting NHL spot right now. Granted the D sucks, but getting a goalie that likes to see a lot of pucks and get hot (Halak) could be a huge playoff push bonus. I think GMGM wants to win NOW, not concentrating too much on 5-6 years from now.

  • DashingDave314

We could have Patrick Roy in his prime and it wouldn’t matter with our defense.

  • VirginiaPatriot

Is the Beagle still with us? Please?

  • yv

Pens getting Vanek for Sutter and 1st in 2014. They again loaded.

Pretty sure that deal is done. Sab gets a goalie that isnt UFA next year, caps get rid of a malcontent player and sure up a “run” for the playoffs. Makes way for groobs to come up next year and prove everything he did this year. Move is actually pretty decent. now just have to figure out how to balance time between the two

TT and Lehtonen are two great goalies (career-wise) IMHO

  • M Taylor

This is assuming he is a winger, despite fitting in as a center better. I am pretty sure he, like Eric Fehr has been asked to fill a hole in the roster he isn’t ideally suited for, but is the best option we currently have. And as such I think he does an excellent job of being fast enough to take an eye or two from Ovi, to get back defensively (although Ovi seems to be putting more focus on improving that aspect of his game!) and to be a second feeder for the usually doubly covered best sniper in the league. I do think Mojo will shine best at the position he seems to most naturally fit, which is why I don’t look at him as being so easily replaced.

still no sources confirming who or what the isles got back for him…

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    Eller? UPDATE: No.

  • yv

That was the quietest, sneaking trade made by Habs 2d and prospect.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

2nd round pick and a prospect!

  • JenCo

    2nd round pick.

  • Troy

2nd round pick and a prospect. Wow. Isles lost pretty big on the whole “operation Vanek.”

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing
  • JenCo

    and a future pick

  • GetchaGrubbOn

Moulson out of Buffalo…shippin it iiiiiiiin.

  • Shaun Phillips

Except I remember hearing that Stevie Y wanted him in the first selection, but the rest of the committee (especially Babcock), didn’t. That would make sense considering he barely saw the ice.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

Yes, Stoa. Just saw all the tweets.

  • yv

    Caps might also was there:

    Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger
Told it was a feeding frenzy for Kesler. A few great offers made. At one point last week as many as 6 teams were legit in play.

  • JenCo

If they didn’t make a move, can’t they just put us out of our misery and have a presser already?!?

  • Troy

That would be too easy, so obviously not the capitals way of dealing with things.

  • Jesse Morgan

I’m fine with what’s happened so far. We get Penner, who seems like a nice guy, the Jackets got rid of Gaborik. Luongo is happy. The rangers slammed their junk in a drawer. Everyone is winning.

  • GetchaGrubbOn

Hoping this means that there is another announcement coming just waiting for it to be official…that’s what happened last year with the Erat announcement.

  • JenCo

    My thought process exactly.

  • yv

Press has been planned after 3pm, so we will see what it was.
Probably, the same, prices were too high and we are good to go with what we have plus Kuzya.

  • JenCo

Especially since they just moved GMGM’s presser back.

  • Phil

The O’s signed Johan Santana!! Wait….I may be on the wrong board….

  • JenCo

They just pushed it back. Something is coming.

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

    Yup! Something’s happening….

  • GetchaGrubbOn

    Halak?!?!?!?!?!

  • yv

    It is Halak to Was

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

    Alan May: Halak to Washington

  • http://twitter.com/1bscarbro Benjamin Scarbro

    BLOW UP!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • JenCo

    Boom goes the Dynamite!

  • Mike Reppenhagen

    Just heard it, too. HMPH.

  • northernMD

    Dumb…. dumb dumb dumb

  • GetchaGrubbOn

    Bye, Neuvs :(

  • Jesse Morgan

Ugh, who looks at our team and objectively says “Their goaltending is a mess!”

  • selftitled85

    Wow.

  • Lawrence

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG HALAK…well thats better than marty imo.

  • Jesse Morgan

Where is the Dale Hunter bad bad bad bad bad gif when you need it?

  • http://twitter.com/1bscarbro Benjamin Scarbro
  • oryp

    NOOOOOOOPE. Freakin Halak.

  • JH

Halak? Seriously??? The space/time continuum warps. What kind of Karmic, uh, thing, is this? As Spinal Tap says, there’s a fine line between clever and stupid. We’ll see which side of the line this ends up on.

  • Jesse Morgan

Gentlemen and a scholar is what you are.

  • Myan

    Did we just sign Halak????

  • GetchaGrubbOn

If he plays like he did against Washington in the playoffs a few years back then WE CANNOT BE BEAT! But if he’s human like all the other other tenders, then we still have a lot of improvements to make.

  • Brackaphobia

    HALAK’D!

  • Kelsey

The fuck is going on… Halak? Ugh! http://i.imgur.com/rZU7F.gif

  • selftitled85

Are there any defensemen in the audience who wants to try out for the team? Inquire within!

  • Jesse Morgan

    https://twitter.com/FedFedRMNB/status/441311906804948992

He’s right, no more worrying about getting Halak’d! Of course there’s the last time we played him which he probably still has PTSD about…

  • yv

I thought GMGM will finish with CZECH (Erat/Klesla) – MATe (Matt Moulson), but he decided announced another CzECh also from BUF!
Hopefully, Holtby would be not rattled with this tonight.

  • Jason Smith

Neuvirth hasn’t been told he’s leaving? Then who is? We can’t possibly be adding Halak without dealing a goalie, can we?

  • Jesse Morgan

    Perhaps it’s Grubby!

  • peach

And there is all those reports about Washington being desperate for a goalie. I don’t know how I feel about this one, on one hand I think Halak is a huge improvement over Neuvy who just couldn’t stay healthy. On the other hand I don’t think it matters what goalie we have in net if our defense cant clear the net out.

  • Jesse Morgan

    https://twitter.com/BuffNewsVogl/status/441312564031389697

Looks like it’s Neuvy. Good luck in Buff.

  • GetchaGrubbOn

A selfish part of me hopes it’s Grubs but I’d hate to see Neuvy take a seat in Hershey and not be in the show. For his sake I hope he’s moved.

  • Shaun Phillips

Bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad. F*(#ing bad.

  • GetchaGrubbOn

    Seem’s it’s Neuvy….to BUFFALO?! Poor kid.

  • GetchaGrubbOn

    SH*T!

  • Jesse Morgan

Well, he wanted to be a starter.

  • Hyusis

    Damn.

  • JH

Dude, Halak is SLOVAK. But, yes, all our Czechs have been traded now (Erat and Neuvirth).

  • Troy

how can you guys possibly not be THRILLED with this trade? Neuvirth has shown us his best possible play, and its average… Halak can win a game/series/tourney on his own, AND he loves to see a lot of shots (which the Caps give up a lot of.) I say #1 Halak #2 Holtby, but that is just me.

  • Shaun Phillips

And I still have 2 Caps goalies and a Buffalo goalie…

  • Jason Smith

This is bad. Losing Neuvy isn’t the end of the world but goal was not really that big of a problem. Halak is .917, Neuvy .914, Holtby .911. All in the same ballpark and Caps goalies have faced a lot more shots.

  • Georgoroth

    >: )

  • JenCo

Nuevy wanted out. I personally feel when a player/agent says that, you can’t come back from it. It’s not good for a locker room. I hope he does well in Buffalo.

  • Troy

Halak improves facing more shots… Which he didn’t get to see a lot of in defensive-minded StL. I like the trade, a lot. Neuvy isn’t a goalie that can win a series on his own, Halak definitely is.

  • http://twitter.com/1bscarbro Benjamin Scarbro

No cap space. Kuzvy not included. Possible another guy given up in trade More to be considered. It may not be Halak – Neuvirth…

  • yv

It looks like it is straight Halak for Neuvy, which seems not bad, b/c Neuvy wanted out anyway.

  • Rob W.

we were doing so well until now

  • http://twitter.com/1bscarbro Benjamin Scarbro

    And a sixth-round pick… i think

  • Hyusis

I’m so happy we have fixed…nothing

  • Troy

over the cap. Must be retaining some of Halak’s salary…

  • Jesse Morgan

We all wanted a defenseman. I agree that this is a decent trade if it’s Neuvy for Halak straight across.

  • Jason Smith

Yes, but Neuvy wasn’t our goalie, Holtby is. Now you gut Holtby’s confidence wondering if he’s being replaced instead of backed up. And you completely fail to address the fact that our D is so bad we’re playing John Erskine on a regular basis.

  • Phil

Is Halak a rental or does he have anything left on him?

  • Ted Leonsis

This stream from monumental sports is ass. Can’t wait till they start producing game broadcasts.

  • Georgoroth

Et flebunt, et filii, et proclamate ad angelos, et iusti laborare. Georgoroth Ave!

  • Ternesti

well with penner we got really good net crashing guy

  • GetchaGrubbOn

How’s Halak without pads clearing the crease?

  • Troy

NOthing to do with the D and obviously I agree that it is terrible and should have been upgraded, but if the asking price for D men was too high they still got rid of an unhappy player and replaced him with another goalie that COULD win a series even with the terrible D that the capitals have.

  • Troy

could be Halak/Neuvy if the sabres retain some of Halak’s contract… right?

  • a

There is a lot of emotional reaction and shortsightedness in the move. Neuvy was malcontent being on the caps and that probably wouldn’t change in the future. He didn’t seem to have the locker room either. We get a solid goaltender to make a final push for the playoffs. Halak is UFA next year so it would seem to me that we are making a path for Groobs to come up next year and end the goalie controversy. Halak could plays better with the more shots he sees and with our defense giving up as many shots as they do… Clearly a top defender would have been nice but at what cost. Now the question is, how do we balance Holts and Halak?

  • Hyusis

Yeah. I hope he Knubles the fool out of our opposition.

  • yv

Looks like Caps still have 61K$ under the cap. So, they are fine. Kuzya’s ELC would be prorated

  • JenCo

This summer is going to be interesting, Cap space wise, to say the least. Making room.

  • Troy

Buyout list: Brouwer, Ward, Laich, Green (green probably first to go, sadly, at 6+ mil cap hit)

  • peach

lol end the goalie controversy or start it all over again like we have been doing for how many years now?

  • Jesse Morgan

Rental, according to the RMNB post.

  • Jesse Morgan

Did we break the russian machine site?

  • northernMD

Halak really isn’t a significant upgrade over holtby. His .917% is essentially the same as holtby, only it was on a ridiculously better defensive team. He’s not going to be stopping goals that holtby wasn’t stopping.

If you really wanted to trade Neuvy, thats fine. And if you wanted to get cap space for the summer (Halak is a UFA), thats fine too. You could have easily gone after pics and prospects. Halak has no value after this season. Its a lateral move that could have been done much better.

Not to mention you didn’t address the actual weakness on your team, defense.

  • Shaun Phillips

RMNB but their site does. :)

  • JenCo

Out of those 4, I would argue that Laich would be the most logical to buy out. I love them all though.

  • Jason Smith

Ifyou look only at this trade, getting rid of someone who wants to be gone then it’s a good move. Personally, I saw Neuvy as one of the fe moveable players we had; solid NHL performer without a big contract weighing him down. Should have been able to get a D5 or D6 for him.

  • anjin

halak and holtby seems to be fine duo! looking forward to see kuzya on the ice for the caps!!!

  • http://plus.google.com/+jayrushing Jay Rushing

Traded a Czech for a Slovakian. There’s a pun somewhere in there for a headline writer more clever than I am.

  • Jesse Morgan

According to May, they got rid of Klesla and got a 3rd from Buff.

  • Nicole Lippy

Yes, lets totally get rid of the one defenseman we picked up in trades for Halak. Ack.

  • selftitled85

Apparently it is Neuvy and Klesla for Halak and a 3rd round pick.

  • Guest

Klesla involved in Halak deal? do I smell defense?

  • Jason Smith

If you mean that the Caps defense stinks and will not be any better after the deadline, then yes.

  • selftitled85

Maybe the Caps will waive Erskine after the trade. It counts with the trade then, right?? Addition by subtraction!

  • Jonah

i don’t think ward should go. him and chimmer are the only line thats consistent and tough.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

Unless they’re super old, you’re better off using career sv% than season.

  • Igor Kleyner

    Forsberg = Latta + Erat
    Erat = Brown + Klesla + 4th – Mitchell
    Klesla = Halak + 3rd – Neuvirth

    Forsberg = Latta + Brown + Klesla + 4th – Mitchell
    Forsberg = Latta + Brown + Halak + 3rd + 4th – Mitchell – Neuvirth

i was about to up vote this but i realized that it would be 11 up votes and not 10. keep the obvious part of it alive

  • Jonah

the problem is that we have like 10 D5-6 in our team. orlov, olesky, carrick, erskine, strachan, wey, broulliet. we need… gahhhhh so many people have said it i don’t care anymore.

  • Jonah

send them all to roberto luongo’s hotel room for his first night!
