Scoarboard Watching: The Caps Have Been Eliminated

lost

“The team will make the playoffs, as I promised, ten to fifteen years in a row.”
Ted Leonsis, 2011.

The Wings got a point and the Jackets beat the Stars, thereby officially eliminating the Washington Capitals from playoff contention. After six straight years of making the postseason, the Caps will be tearing down after their final game on Sunday. There will be no Capitals playoff games for me to write about. I don’t know what to do with my hands.

Summer beckons. Tee time. Watching someone else win the Cup. Watching Pittsburgh flame out in the first two rounds. Watching the Os and the Nats. Drinking frozen mai tais poolside. People getting fired. The draft. People getting hired. Free agency. Dev camp. Sunburns. And then we’ll do it all again in the fall.

We invite you to wail in grief below. Come join the GIF party.

    Now silly season begins!

  • Dave

Do the deed, Ted. GMGM needs a pink slip.

  • 70Caps

First time for me. I thought it would at least come down to the last game or two. I know I’m an idiot, and I know I shouldn’t be, but I am totally stunned right now. Just listened to the last 10 minutes on radio.

  • Jay DeLancey

GREAT NOW CAN THE TWO HEAD HONCHOS

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com Ian Oland

    Sigh.

  • H70

    Expected but still hurts.

  • VeggieTart

Not surprised. Still hurts like hell.

  • Josh Carey

Didn’t think this would happen this year. Oh well. It’s the best thing that could have happened to them this season. Still want to see them play hard their last three games. I’ll still be pulling for them like it’s game 7.

  • Jack Conness

Here we go. Now let’s see what happens. GMGM and Oates better be out next week.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett
  • Jay DeLancey

    they havent been fired yet?

  • Jay DeLancey

so we should expect blow outs based on recent game 7 history

  • Josh
  • JohntheCapsMan

Definitely saw it coming, but it doesn’t make it any easier. It’s even harder to take because the Caps have finally (in the last two games, that is) started to play with some heart. It’s said far too often and it’s cliche I know, but maybe next season…

  • Josh

Also GMGM and Oates needs to go.

  • Josh Carey

I didn’t say I expected them to play like it was game 7. Regardless of what happened last year, we all still sat and watched that whole game, pulling for them till the end.

  • Alex Hughes

This team just didn’t come to play after the Olympic Break and that 7 game losing streak in January didn’t help either. I thinnk this team is going to get blown up and Oates and GMGM Gone

  • Alex Hughes

There’s always next year……said every Caps fan ever

  • 70Caps

I know it’s the right decision, and an easy one for McPhee, but I honestly liked oates a lot. I wish the season was longer because I know the capitals would eventually get some consistency under him if they had more time. I know that it took too long, and that Oates should have won more earlier, but I can’t really say I want him gone. If I see the new candidates, and they are clearly more likable and better coaches, I can adjust, but for now, you guys can go ahead and criticize me or just ignore this comment because you don’t think a human could be saying this right now.

  • Jimmie

Well! *claps, then rubs hands together* It’s finally dead. Time to do the autopsy!

    Dig in!

Never give up capitals, the cup will come soon enough

    ..

  • scrubversive

Been saying that since I was old enough to know what the Stanley Cup was. But I’ll keep saying it, cuz if someone doesn’t keep the positivity alive, DC sports cynicism wins.

See you next season Caps, I hope your off-season is productive and its effectiveness shines through next year.

Edit: Typo, must be tired and sad.

  • Alex Hughes

This burns deep. This team just wasn’t built for a playoff run

  • Josh Carey

I especially want Pittsburgh to lose. They beat us in the home and home and proceeded to lose every game from there on out in which they could have helped the Caps. And gave up a goal in the last 1:15 tonight against Detroit to seal it.

  • 70Caps

Knowing Leonsis, it will probably be at least till August till something, if anything, happens. It should, but I don’t think it would fit him to.

  • SM74

Admit it, you are much more happy to get a chance to see Ovechkin and Kuznetsov play for Russia in Minsk. You are! You simply are. It’s a fact. Rejoice.

  • jackbarry93

    heavy ovi thoughts tonight

    booo-urns

  • 70Caps

Wow. I actually had some respect for that city, as towards the end of tuesday’s game, the radio announcers were practically happy that the game went to overtime because they said Phoenix needed the points more than they did.

  • oryp35

Wear black to the game on Sunday for the funeral? Spread the word.

  • Adam Fink

If they fire GMGM, at least wait until after the draft. He’s drafted incredibly well

  • Lawrence

In all honesty, looking forward to the off-season and eventually next season. This year has been way too painful with not enough bright spots.

Things I want to see this off-season:
    1) New management.
    2) Ovechkin marrying his dream girl.
    3) Ovechkin, kuzy, orlov, maybe semin, and other crazy russians making some wickedly awesome rap singing songs in the car.
    4) Rocket Richard winner speech.
    5) New management.
    6) RMNB analysis.

This season may have been terrible on many levels, but I am thankful to be a part of a great website with great people like this one. I couldn’t have made it through without all of you. Thanks RMNB for giving us a place to rant, love, and discuss the caps.

Let’s finish these last games strong.

  • Hockey mom

Well, I’ll be there for the last game for this version of the Caps…I hope they don’t totally check out now that they are out. September is a long time away…sigh…

  • Jonathan Kenny

    Go Gabby and the Ducks!!

  • Owen Johnson

So every year for the past 3 years I’ve made Facebook albums documenting the growth of my playoff beard. This is the whole gallery this year

  • 70Caps

I’m impressed. Almost half the people here actually seem like real fans.

  • John M

“It’s insane, really just insane,” Alzner said. “We don’t have the identity. What we’re supposed to be, we are not being. That’s something that needs to change. I personally am a huge fan of the tight-checking, grind-it-out, 2-1 and 1-0 games, but that’s not the way this team is built. If we’re not built that way we have to be better for how we’re built.”

“I don’t know whether it’s true or not, but I feel there’s a good chunk of coaches and/or managers in the League that might like our lineup over some of theirs,” Alzner said. “We have a great lineup. We might at times be a little thin on ‘D’ with injuries and call-ups, but we have so many good players here that I think at the beginning of the year we thought we’d be challenging Pittsburgh for our division. I think other people thought that as well. We’re shocked it hasn’t come together.

“Maybe that’s what we need right now, kind of a shock to the system.”

  • Anthony Elworthy/scrubversive

Geh, my comments at the bottom of that article stand. Alzner rocks, thanks for being honest.

  • Anthony Elworthy/scrubversive

I’m surprised we don’t get more trolls from other teams. Guess we have to be better than we are for that (or maybe Peter and Ian are just crushing trolls before I see them)

  • Dave

The only redeeming part of this is that I called the Caps weren’t making the playoffs on Jan 17th (when I believe they were still in a playoff spot):

    http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2014/01/17/lumbus-beats-caps-5-1/#comments

So I got that going for me, which is nice…

  • Alicia

Now you have made me want to weep more with that Doctor Who gif. That was the saddest episode and this has been the saddest season for me as a Caps fan.

  • Anthony Elworthy/scrubversive

At least I don’t have to shave what I have now, let it grow out unruly, or dye my beard.

  • welp.

Goodbye Adam Oates. You always gave us a cheer when we saw an occasional Oates face. You were a pretty stupid coach it appears as you didnt pair Nicky and Ovi together for a crucially important part of the season. Thank you for causing an implosion of our team. I never would’ve questioned trading our captain, Alex Ovechkin, but you sure have placed him in situations so that we can all see he does at many times suck. So one the capitals players skate off the ice for their 82nd game as a unit, I hope you can remember that you really did blow us up. Even when GMGM, a notoriously horrible GM, gave you a pretty good roster for playoff run, you failed to do that. And when you see it all come crashing down we got to see the childish side of you as you blamed Ovi, our captain, and accused our goalie, Halak, of being to scared to play in a hockey game. Congrats Adam Oates, you made the hall of fame as a player, no way in hell you’d get it as a coach.

  • Jack Terry

The biggest issue is our defence I think. I’m not going to rant too hard because overall the past few years have gone fairly well. But to be successful McPhee needs to look for a top 4 defenceman to help the D core out. Carlson and Alzner are solid. Green has lost his touch.. but he’s decent. The younger defenceman aren’t ready for the NHL but have potential so they should be 3rd line defence or develop in Hershey. We need a really solid D man to play with Green. Also some of the following players should maybe be traded for a good 2nd line: Brouwer, Ward, Laich, Chimera. We have too many 3rd line type players which should be traded for a solid 1st or 2nd line player. But if we keep playing like the St. Louis game, there’s hope.

  • mig991

Rock bottom sucks but it is for the best. If the Caps clean house then this season was worth it.

  • Catherine__M

Also so many props on the LOST finale pic. Layers of meaning. Deep, friend. Deep.

  • Jack Terry

there in a wildcard spot… They won’t go deep in the post season.

  • Sean Hunt

We’ve all become too spoiled when it comes to making the playoffs as Caps fans. Yes, it sucks, and between this, the HIMYM ending and graduating college I basically have nothing happy in my life, but does getting a new coach each year until somehow it works really sound like a practical plan? A lot of great teams miss the playoffs sometimes. The league is much more competitive right now, and honestly I see the West dominating for the next few years anyways. We need to take a deep breath from the short term and find some long term solutions. Maybe Oates and GMGM aren’t the right guys, but maybe they just need some more time together.

  • Catherine__M

I pretty much *have* to go (birthday present yay). I like this idea.

Cooper, I appreciate your optimism. You are a rare bird indeed. Though, tell me if I’m wrong, the extra tall line-spacing of the typography and the black background is supposed to symbolize all the whining we do when said great thing doesn’t happen fast enough.

  • Alex Hughes

It is time to hit the refresh button on this team. The Caps D-Core was mediocre at best, playing 3 AHL players half the time. The Caps have 3 good D-men in Carly, Alzner, and Orly, other than that they are either AHL players, injury prone, or John Erskine. The line combos were terrible after the Olympic break besides the 3rd line. Who would want to play for Oates after he criticizes his players and reveals personal coversations (ex. Halak, who will be gone after this week). GMGM made poor moves especially letting Neuvy go and not going after D-men at the trade deadline. Hindsight is a terrible thing because letting Boudreau go was a huge mistake in my opinion. Yes he didn’t win the in the playoffs but at least he got us there, and at least we dominated the regular season, as opposed to the last 3 seasons.

  • Sam

Neuvy leaving wasn’t GMGM’s fault. Oates’ reluctance to play him forced him to want to move. He’s a capable goalie, he deserved an opportunity.

  • Alex Hughes

No more John Walton Playoff OT Goal calls? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • Catherine__M

At least Jack didn’t have to “die alone” in that utterly disappointing finale.

  • Gersh21

Back in September, I’d have laughed in your face if you told me the WIZARDS would be the only DC/Baltimore team to make the playoffs between then and now.

Oh and if realignment never happened (and I did my math right), the Caps would currently be 7th seed since Detroit and Columbus were in the West last year.

  • Catherine__M

And maybe a Cup watching party?! *Someone* volunteered at the last party to be RMNB social chair. Someone *else* may have been too drunk to remember that he thought it was an excellent idea :). Offer stands either way.

  • Hockey mom

    Joe B and Locker, too…

  • johnnymorte

In a way, I’m kind of glad because I’m tired of watching Ovi give those first round exit speeches every year. That s*&t breaks my heart. Let’s clean up house, get everybody out of here that doesn’t belong: GMGM and the 97-98 Washington Capitals coaching reunion tour sideshow circus. Get someone in here with some vision, some passion about what this team should be. For one, if we’re not gonna make the playoffs, for F’s sake, at least make it entertaining. If you’re going to hell, you might as well do it playing the piano. I’m talking about firewagon trading chances cardiac caps! Get these monkeys out of here!

  • YMR

Well, at least the Gillette Sales Rep for the capital region is happy. The demand for razors remains intact. Next year, boys! Go Caps!

Yes, excellent post…I was there, too, peeved about Oleksy getting scratched…Something happened right around that time and it was all starting to hit the fan…Whatever grip Oates and the players had on their game was really beginning to get lost then…

Last night I had a nightmare that GMGM got a 4 year extension. I hope it is not a warning from the future.

  • Hammerino

Oates wasn’t a good coach, by any measure. But how can you not focus 90% of your angst on GMGM. Oates is a first-year coach, one in a string that could not get the core of this team (and the lack of a legit D corps) over the hump. Give up the ghost – Oates is out, but he’s not the problems. They were here before he was. And will remain unless big changes are made.

  • Fedor

How about Orlov? He looks like Znarok’s kind of guy.

I still don’t quite get the calls for GMGM’s head. He has brought a lot of talent to the team, made some great moves, and then Oates doesn’t utilize them. I love Oates the former player, but I don’t love Oates the coach. He needs to go. I’m totally OK with keeping GMGM.

Eh, good for them. I’d rather we got it, of course… but I feel bad for their fans (and a lot of their players)… if I had my druthers, I’d rather we make it and Detroit gets knocked out (or, you know.. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia…).

  • Eric Schulz

God, I hope not; it didn’t work out well last time. I mean, it wasn’t a full-on blowup, but we tried to change the identity and… oops, that didn’t go well.
Get a good coach: that seems obvious, even if you had a good year. Get a good GM: ditto. The forwards are fine; the goalies are fine. The defense… oh, not enough DEFENSE from our DEFENDERS? Well, let’s fix that (no need to move guys – obviously, we wouldn’t keep everybody, but nothing wrong with Alzner, Carlson, Green, Orlov, we just need 2 more defensive-minded, physical guys), and then see how we do. I’m guessing we’ll be just fine.
If there’s an OBVIOUS hole on a team, instead of blowing it up, just… you know… fix it.

  • Begemot

Creepy Russian eyepatch guy for tough defensive coach, maybe? Ben would the most devious at wheeling and dealing.

  • Eric Schulz

He didn’t identify our NUMBER ONE weakness… for over a decade, he’s been fine with essentially no defense from our defenders. That’s completely unacceptable.
He’s not awful, of course… we have a good foundation, and with a coach who was only *slightly* better at maximizing our roster (Penner on top line? Beagle not in top-6?) we could’ve/should’ve made the playoffs. But even with some bad luck (Grabovski injury; Laich injury; Kuznetsov’s delay) we could’ve made it with some defense.

Also… Perreault would’ve been a great player to have when Grabovski went down. GMGM shouldn’t have traded him.
I’m very grateful we aren’t in the same situation as a team like, say, the Leafs; their organization is downright incompetent, and it’s hard to see them competing for the next 5-10 years (when’s Clarkson’s contract expire?). However, it’s very, very difficult to see us every getting over the hump with GMGM in office. It’s a risky move, as he’s done a nice job of getting us talent.. but he’s also done a nice job of shipping it out (Semin, Ribeiro, FORSBERG… Hannan? I understood the Flash-for-Hannan trade… the only time GMGM addressed the defense in any real way, as far as I’m aware, over the last… 12 years? But then we just let him walk.) Also, I hated the deadline trades before the Habs bumped us; moving out Pothier in exchange for Corvo? Who thought we needed more offense and less defense? We were the best team in the league, why mess with chemistry if it isn’t a clear upgrade? Maybe not why we lost, but the results didn’t exactly help his cause.

  • Eric Schulz

It’s only a dumpster fire if GMGM stays; even then, it *may* be salvageable with a legit coach (I don’t think GMGM can get it done… but he doesn’t suck… maybe we can just get lucky and he’ll accidentally sign a top-4 defender… maybe he’ll see M. Greene and think “oh, I want to resign Mike Green…)

  • Eric Schulz

(Somebody told me Greene isn’t the same guy, but from what I’ve seen of him this year, I don’t see it that way… even if he has lost something, I would think he’d be an upgrade as Orlov’s partner on 3rd pair… and shit, that may be enough… again, with a good coach.)

  • Eric Schulz

We had Neuvy signed for next year… if you are the GM, you don’t HAVE to trade him. Instead of trading him, he would’ve gotten a lot of the starts that Halak got; Oates eventually sent Grubauer down. Maybe too late, sure, but Neuvy just needed to be patient. He’d’ve forgotten all about that trade shit once he started sharing the net with Holtby again. That was, like, 90% GMGM’s fault.

  • Eric Schulz

Boudreau being fired was a huge mistake? Yeah, that’s not hindsight, that’s “I told you so.”.. sight?
I agree about the roster though; we need to improve the defense. The forwards are fine; the goalies are fine (although a veteran backup would be a nice addition). No need to blow anything up… just refresh with a new coach and 2 new defenders (which I don’t see GMGM doing, hence new GM as well as new coach).
I would single out moving Perreault as worse than moving Neuvirth; with Perreault and Backstrom as top 2 Cs… that looks a lot better than Backstrom and Beagle.

  • Eric Schulz

It’s not about “Oates needs to be fired b/c we missed the playoffs,” it’s about “Oates mishandled quite a few things as the coach; our lines made very little sense, so let’s get a new guy.” The things he mishandled are the reason we missed the playoffs; you have the cause and result backwards.

  • Christoffer Salo Salomonsson

I will never get the Forsberg-erat deal.. never in my life.. as a Swede and a Leksand fan, watching Forsberg play since he was 15 i think, and to trade him for the worst player to play in a caps jersey the last six years.. don’t forget, he finished -1 in goals for caps this year..

but i still believe GM tried to get som good defense this year but didn´t find any for the right price, i mean, what good defense was there available this year,

and a really miss the 2009-2010 caps….. and a still love the caps!

Don’t want to hear Leonsis say that he needs time to ponder and not make rash decisions. We see the weaknesses and have all season long. GMGM’s contract is up so let him go and get a new GM soon before the draft and free agency and to hire a new head coach with NHL head coaching experience. Oates and the other coaches need to get their pink slips after the game on Sunday. Renewed for next season but don’t think I can take a repeat of this year. At least the post firesale teams under Hugs Hanlon gave it their all every night even when they did not have the talent that the current team has. Ward and Chimera are my MVPs for this season.

“The team will make the playoffs, as I promised, ten to fifteen years in a row.”
    – Ted Leonsis, 2011.
Ted’s not worried, his playoff team this year is the Wizards (enter Adam Sandler “Whooopdidooo”). He could give a rats azz about the situation, just as long as he is making a playoff dollar on one of his teams. The “team” in this reference is generic.
IF he did give a damn about his hockey team, he would have said “The team will make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, ten to fifteen years in a row.”
Rebuild the coaching and management staff now.

  • araporrada21

This year was a rough ride, happy for the so called 3rd line with JW,JC, Ovi’s 50th and +/- 34000000000 and of course Kuzya.

I will probably have to take a break. Between my son and the Caps, hockey takes up A LOT of my life, so I will use my newly found free time to do some things that I have been putting off. I will check in occasionally, as I’m almost certifiably addicted to RMNB, though!

Also gotta tell Peter and Ian and the Brouwer Rangers YOU have to try District Taco!!! This Chipotle and Qdoba nonsense is killing me, almost as much as Olesky being sent down to Hershey! ARGH!!!

Peter we will need a breakdown day thread where we can post our cool summer plans, etc…I do have a fun hockey themed vacay planned!

  • JenniferH

Aww, Vampire Diaries caps. Oh, hell, I can bring out tons of those. That’s my show. Heck, I actually have a whole batch of those saved of crying. Here I go!

  • serpent

    YES!

  • John Atchison

Ladies and Gents, you heard it hear first. GMGM gets canned, and replaced by…wait for it….Ron Hextall. The guy, as Asst GM, helped construct the champion Kings a few yrs back. That might make some puke, but watch. He is an up and coming GM

I also think that the vast majority of people that are fans of other teams (myself included) only come to these sites if we’re truly fans of the sport or of the team. Also, I think true hockey fans would rather actually discuss the sport/teams than troll.

  • AFreeman

Drafting is a dodgy enterprise, but other personnel moves are fair game & that’s where GM deserves full blame.
What does this franchise have from the Varlamov trade?
    The Eakin trade?
    The Fleischmann trade?
Why isn’t Boudreau the coach anymore? The one coach who won this franchise a President’s Trophy & how many consecutive division titles?
This team couldn’t sign a top-four defenseman in the off-season because of no cap room because of large contracts for non-large players. No disrespect to the current crop of defensemen playing for the team now, but other than Orlov, who was excessively jerked around, how many of these young players are ready for prime time?
What is this management team’s record with developing talent (and keeping it)?
    McPhee’s had a good run.
But unless this team has been in the playoffs for 23 years straight, failing to make the playoffs considering the run of recent successes is grounds to not be renewed.

  • Shaun Phillips

One thing Caps and Wings fan agree on. We’ll try our best to make sure they don’t get past the first round. :)

  • Anthony Elworthy/scrubversive

And that is part of why I love hockey so much. Devoted fans of ice hockey are devoted fans of ice hockey. We have our differences but it’s the sport that brings us together. Good form, Shaun, good form.

  • hockey mom

I kind of get the feeling this team is pretty fractured, too. I think they need to clean out the bad mental mojo that is plaguing them and and do some team building (bonding), too.

  • Kelsey

Our shot into the playoffs: http://i.imgur.com/bEdpq.gif

  • sheena dunn

I’ll be there too! I can’t be one of those fans who is like since they are not in the playoffs, I’m not going to the game….

  • VeggieTart

A new coach and a goalie coach who won’t mess with Holtby’s head.

  • sheena dunn

GMGM will just walk. His contract is up. I think Oates will be fired…and Kolzig too. He messed with Holts game too much and it really affected him this seaosn

  • sheena dunn

They won’t fire him, its contract is up. They will just let him walk.

  • VeggieTart

I usually wear a jersey. But I could always switch my red lipstick for black. Would it be tasteless to encourage people to bring “Fire Oates” signs?

  • VeggieTart

Rumor has it Ted is looking for a new GM.

  • sheena dunn

heard any names yet?? I figured they would just let him walk.

  • VeggieTart

Might I refer you to this website’s excellent piece on the pros and cons of firing Adam Oates. The writers came up with about 20 reasons he needs to go; the folks commenting on it came up with six or seven more.

  • Shaun Phillips

Thanks Anthony. As a fan of all the Detroit sports teams, believe me, I know how it feels to miss the playoffs: went through the Dead Things era, Tigers in the 90s-early 00s, and Lions (enough said). It sucks. Here’s hoping Ted gets things right this summer and I have 2 teams to root for in the playoffs next season.

  • Chris Best

Not making the playoffs was the best thing that could happen though. If they made the playoffs we’d hear some horsecrap comment about how they were “close”…and least this way they have to admit this team is a dysfunctional nightmare at best and deal with it.

  • Diller M

Hannah Montana Peter, don’t pretend you didn’t know

  • ErskSMASH

from what i gather from this blog/comments, all we need to do is get rid of ersk and we are a playoff team, should be easy…

  • Diller M

One of my fav GIFs of all time!

  • Diller M

Can’t believe you don’t have a GF Peter!

  • Diller M

Technically he will be non-renewed which I don’t think requires a pink slip :) Saves on paper, remember the NHL is going green!

  • VeggieTart

Whoever kept Grubauer up long after Neuvy was healthy deserves some blame, but Neuvy also shares some. After Grubi was gone, Neuvy was given several opportunities to play and was injured or sick most of the time. He said he wanted to be the number one goalie, and that wasn’t going to happen here. And he’s apparently injured in Buffalo.

  • George McPhee

    We still like our team.

  • Diller M

This is a playoff caliber team, if not for the shoddy goal tending. We don’t mind giving up 97 shots per game. Anyone seen my resume?

  • Diller M

Now do one with Adam Oates’ coaching career, and GMGM’s tenure with the Caps.

  • DC Hockey Nut

I’m not upset at all that we didn’t make the playoffs. We did not deserve it one bit after how we as a team performed this season. Sure, AO got 50 goals and our Powerplay was red hot, but the rest of the team (other than arguably the third line) underperformed either due to bad utilization or just being bad. Changes need to be made on the ice and in the office to get this team back into shape while Ovie is still near the top of his game.

  • sheena dunn

His contract is up, you’d think we would have heard talks about him staying. Plus, rumors has it Ted is looking for a new GM. it’s time to go

  • Coach or Players

Remember that chump of a coach Bruce Boudreau? Where’s he at now?

  • Guest

I remember around this time in 2010 I was riding high, excited for what untold glory and riches might lie ahead. I knew that the Caps had become a dynasty team, and I was willing to bet on them every time. I bought their apparel, I attended their games, and then the playoffs happened. Then the next few years happened. I didn’t let it phase me, though. I still had my hopes, I still bought their apparel, I still attended their games. And, finally, last night happened. Now I’m just sitting here all like:

  • Le Connard Francais

The Caps won’t make the playoffs for the next 5 years. LOLLLLL!

  • Jon A

I’m glad you started this article with that quote from Ol’ Uncle Ted. I think it sums up the problem with the Caps perfectly from the top down… No promise of a Cup, just the playoffs. Well, there’s always next year to be disappointed in the second round… Is it October yet?

  • Catherine__M

I’m on board with the plan. I was mostly thinking about Patchy’s penchant for a scorched earth campaign and it’s potential applications in busniess. But it totally works for defense, and honestly the front office probably requires a certain finesse that this guy most certainly lacks.

  • Catherine__M

    Too soon?

  • Catherine__M

Oh I was just about to type about how awesome it would be if they played each other and then the whole thing was so dirty that the refs declared no winner and everyone has to sit in the penelty box all next season. And how that could be an option for #thebank (I picture a real actual (cardboard) bank that we…I don’t know. Do something with. For prizes (mostly glory) ).
But then I realized that they can’t play each other because of conferences and all and now I feel deflated. I still want to make a bank.

You don’t get to decide who is and who is not a real fan. Neither do I.

  • Owen Johnson

    Quack Quack!

  • Owen Johnson

If 9th in the East is rock bottom, I’ll take it.

  • Owen Johnson

You had respect for them? You have obviously never met an Ohio State fan.

  • John Martino

He meant, if there’s no realignment. If there’s realignment, well, how can we expect to beat out Detroit and Columbus and to beat team not in the weak Southeast Division.
    Blame Winnepeg.

  • stacyh13

Well, my sons team has been more exciting to watch all season. . .and they are still playing, too! At least that will continue for a while. . .

    But, poor Ovi. . .

  • Shaun Phillips

Not for me, but some people, you never know. :)

  • JoeA

Why is nobody discussing the true reason why the Caps failed to make the playoffs?

    Ovi: Engaged
    Backstrom: New Father, Engaged
    Green: Engaged
    Carlson: Engaged
Laich: Publicly expressed his love for an international star.

The core of this team is way too comfy, and no one is playing to get laid anymore.

The thousand other reasons for this teams under-performing which have been very well documented are all secondary to this.

  • Jeanne Blue

Expected this. There is good to be had in missing the playoffs, for all of reasons previously mentioned, plus we save $ not buying playoff tickets.
So why do I feel so sad and let down?

  • Rhino40

Düüüde, how about going to a Habs’ fan site and celebrating your team’s (relative) success instead of coming here to pile-on?

IMO, Montreal is one of the most storied franchises inn the history of the NHL. And that’s part of the problem!. Montreal is a great team steeped in glory, and few who are not fans of another Original Six team can despise the team itself.

But the Habs’ fans are another matter: for all that storied history, all those moments, all those legends, all those dynasties, Habs fans seem to feel medically compelled to rub the collective noses of other teams’ fans in that history at every possible opportunity</b.
    Sound familiar? Well, it is.

The reason Habs’ fans suck is because they are exactly like New York Yankees fans: their team has won so many championships that they have collectively developed a sense of what I call “entitlement to victory”, as in “Tha Yanks’ll win becawse they’re the Yanks, and dassIT!”.

If Kaatu had landed in Montreal instead of Washington and gotten cornered by a Habs fan., he might have been induced to believe that:

&bull: Every NHL Game That Ever Really Mattered was won by the Montreal Canadiens
    • The Montreal Canadiens not only invented hockey, but also invented ice itself.
    • any professional hockey games played prior to the Habs’ existence were not really hockey games at all, but some sort of ersatz substitute.
    • Any seasons in which the Canadiens failed to win the Stanley Cup were seasons in which Les Habitants had simply chosen to rest.
    • the Montreal Canadiens are the greatest team that ever was or ever will be.
    • if a Canadien falls or gets injured or is prevented from scoring in any way as a result of a play, then there should be a penalty.
    • If the Canadiens fail to win any particular game, it is beacuse 1) the officials were bribed 2) the game didn’t really count 3) the other team cheated.
    • The Capture of the Stanley Cup by any team other than the Montreal Candiens was/is a Violation Of God’s Natural Order.
    • Any game the Habs win by a margin of less than 57-0 is a sign that someone is slacking off.
    • Any regular Habs season with a record less than 82-0-0 is to be regarded an abject failure.

And of course this Flamethrower would not be complete if I neglected to mention a couple of other things that suck about Habs fans, such as:

    • That stupid f***ing goalsong.
    • RDS never
ever showing the score onscreen while the puck is in play–”beecause eef you do not know ze score olraydee, yew wair not payeeng attenshon and know noseeng about ze hockey, yew Eenglish peeg-dog
    • Pierre Houdet (“tire y le BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT!!!!!!!!!!!“) is hockey’s version of Andres Cantór. He is also the biggest f***ing Homer in all the NHL.
Don’t go away mad Le Connard (Canard) Francais…Just go enjoy your team’s (momentary) success and GO AWAY. And as you go, remember this:
    Votre Equipe peu, Grenouille!!!!

It’s ok to admit you like Hannah Montana, I’m 31 years old and I’ll admit it. Lame jokes make me laugh.

  • Ryan Deem

    Thank you for this

I think you won the gifs today

  • Esteban Encina

All of this I will be doing over the summer. I will also be following DC United (hoping for a winning season) and the PDL Baltimore Bohemians, and the MLL Chesapeake Bayhawks, as well as World Cup soccer. At least, the Wizards are in the NBA Playoffs. Of course all the while expecting the Caps to clean house.

  • Shaun Phillips

  • Bilal

dammit………..for once im looking forward to the off season. Hopefully, with the right moves during the off season, we will bounce back after this season. Hey every Franchise deals with a bad season, sometimes seasons. We can get through this. Lets Go Caps!

  • Chris Cerullo

This is true as well haha

  • 70Caps

    I said seem like.

  • 70Caps

Okay, but leave out the Detroit part next time. You have the wings, and it’s kind of hard for me to understand your empathy..

  • oryp35

Sigh. Every year he’s coached a full season, he’s won his division.

  • Sarah

Ah, but the Hawks won the Cup last year, and we all know what they were having a “tremendous amount” of.
    That’s right: success!

  • Veloj

and Kuzya is already married. guess he’ll be a bust

  • Veloj

except the Habs haven’t won jack in 20 years. Most likely not in this twerp’s lifetime

And it’s a Habs fan. THE HABS. The team that literally traded away the best goalie of all time.

  • Cooper

Thanks I was just trying to show all caps fans that it’s not the end of the road just yet, our core is still young. And I just want to say Thank you for everything you and Peter do here. It is truly a unique Experience to have a place to come celly and vent about out dear capitals. Every other fan base should be jealous of what you guys have accomplished. If I may, keep Crashing the net because I bet old lord Stanley can’t wait to finally visit DC.

  • Melissa Pickell

Nope, just have a different opinion.

  • Rhino40

    Ouch…sorry.

  • Le Connard Francais

lol and the caps can’t even make the playoffs, now that they’re no longer in the weakest division in the history of this league. LOL!
