The Capitals Will Select 13th in 2014 NHL Draft

alex-semin-13th-pick

Lucky number 13?

This season, the NHL adopted a draft lottery system like the NBA. That means, unlike in years past, every team that does not make the playoffs has a chance to win the lottery and draft number one overall. The suspense! The television revenues. The bloggity blogs writing about this craziness. Gary, you are such a brilliant commissioner.

The Capitals had a 0.5% chance of getting the first overall pick entering the night and ended up getting dreaded pick number 13, which I guess is good unless you’re really, really superstitious. For those looking for a good omen, the last time the Capitals drafted 13th– back in 2002, they wound up with Alex Semin.

The Florida Panthers, who are awful, won the lottery and will draft first. The Sabres, who are even awfuler, will draft second. Here are the rest of the picks.

13. Capitals
12. Coyotes
11. Predators
10. Ducks
9. Jets
8. Leafs
7. Hurricanes
6. Canucks
5. Islanders
4. Flames
3. Oilers
2. Sabres
1. Panthers

The rest of the first round draft picks (14-29) will be determined by how the 16 playoff-qualifying clubs do in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The cheating Devils — who are cheaters — will pick last in the round.

  • Jack Conness

Man. I came downstairs, got all cozy on the couch, and was ready for some history to happen! Five minutes in, that all changed and my dreams were crushed.

  • Freedoooom

Button had the Capitals taking Fleury(6’3″ LD great skater and physical) with Nylander being a HM.

  • DashingDave314

It’s all Ovechkin’s fault. Why not, everything else is his fault anyway.

  • DashingDave314

Something about the name “Nylander” makes me think he’ll be a bust.

  • Bilal

    He’s that “Nylanders” son…..so maybe

  • Chris Cerullo

I don’t think Nylander falls past Anaheim at 10

  • Chris Cerullo

I’m hoping for Haydn Fleury but with the way we’ve drafted in recent years, I’m fine with whoever we deem worthy to select at #13. With that being said, who knows if we even keep this pick.

    Luongo is hilarious.

  • DashingDave314

Explains why I want to scream “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING” every time I hear his name.

  • DashingDave314

Luongo’s conversations with Eddie Lack are the best.

  • Rob W.

Young Sasha minor makes me laugh. I think 13th is fine, theres enough talent in the top 15 we cant go wrong. Wouldnt mind taking Fleury though, or a Fin, we need more Finland flavor on the roster

  • Chris Cerullo

    Speaking of that….

@eddielack don’t think I haven’t seen the little pic with you and your little Swedish “buddy” …………

  • carsey

sabres need picks and nhl ready talent…wouldn’t mind seeing #13, a 2nd rounder, and a roster player going to buffalo for aaron ekblad at #2.

  • Bilal

    they would never do that(sabres)

but if they do thats fine……….

  • Chris Cerullo

Gonna be interesting to see what happens 1-2. I could see the Panthers taking Ekblad as Gudbranson hasn’t exactly panned out the way they planned and the Sabres could still end up with their man Reinhart at #2.

  • Chris Cerullo

Agreed on the “they would never do that”.

  • Freedoooom

Its dumb to judge a player’s skill based upon their dad.

    If hes BPA, pick him.

  • DashingDave314

Sarcasm doesn’t read well over the internet. I like William a lot, but as Chris said, I see him going at latest to Anaheim.

  • DashingDave314

I’ve got it going Ekblad-Reinhart. You really can’t lose with either of those two though.

  • Bilal

I was gonna say that, but DashingDave beat me to it. What ever. And Yeah, If we get Nylander, it would be a steal. I kinda want Haydn Fleury. But we’ll see.

  • Ugh

He scored too many goals so we had worse odds. What a dick.

  • Freedoooom

Well, there’s plenty of people being dead serious about it… Sot its hard to know which ones are just being sarcastic.

  • Semintheghost

I would love it if the caps draft Barbashev (not sure if I am spelling it right)

  • Dark Stranger

While there have been plenty of “busts” whose fathers had been good NHLers, choosing a son is not necessarily a fail. To use some examples from baseball, Ken Griffey who was the son of a major leaguer who was a minor star, was drafted #1 and became a superstar. And Cal Ripken was drafted in the 2nd round by the very team for which his father was a longtime coach.

  • Jared

Fleury would be dope, but too many teams need blue line help for him to drop to 13. I think he’s like the 2nd ranked D-man.

  • Harjot Singh

Maybe it might be smart to trade this pick for some proven talent? idk just throwing rand stuff out there because its the off-season

  • Harjot Singh

unless we take that fluery guy..

  • John

And then play him on the fourth line?

  • DashingDave314

And trade him for a guy who we’ll scratch?

  • DashingDave314

Ivan Barbashev? Definitely worth considering. My gut tells me that if Fleury’s gone, unless they REALLLLLLLY like Julius Honka, they’ll go with a forward. Prepare yourselves for that.

  • DashingDave314

Or we could just go back in time to Teemu’s rookie season and bring him back to 2014. #TeemuForever

  • Harjot Singh

Well me response to that is we would send the rookie up and down from Hersey.

  • http://batman-news.com tominsocal1

Kovalchuk actually got less money the first few years of the contract and retired before the mega-bucks in. Yes, Lou gamed the system, but nobody benefitted.

  • http://batman-news.com tominsocal1

I’d rather pick the next Tom Wilson than trade for the next Troy Brouwer.

  • http://batman-news.com tominsocal1

Zing! Don’t worry, once they get rid of the esteemed Professor Oates, all this really goofy stuff will stop.

  • Semintheghost

OK. Fleury would be good too. But ever since Semin’s departure Ovi hasn’t had a very talented supporting cast (besides Nicky B) . At lest compared to PTT, CHI ,SJS, and and maybe NYR and DET. Kuzy helps a lot and Barbashev would also help. He might be able to help right away while Fleury would definitely improve our D but he might have to spend a year or two in the minors.

  • Harjot Singh

thats a good point my friend.

  • http://batman-news.com tominsocal1

I’ll be much more confident if someone other than George McPhee makes the pick.

  • Brackaphobia

    Sasha Minor–Not caring since 2002.

  • Rob W.

Id be fine taking a forward, Barbashev, McCann, and Kapanen are all solid and could be there at 13

  • Roman Z.

“every team that does not make the playoffs has a chance to win the lottery and draft number one overall” Ducks are #10 on that list … Am i missing anything?

  • Josh Carey

It’s Ottawa’s pick. They traded it to the Ducks in the trade that sent Bobby Ryan to Ottawa and Silferberg to Anaheim.

  • Roman Z.

    Thanks man!

  • Barrett

Haydn Fleury (D) or Nick Ritchie (LW)

  • Chris Cerullo

Cant hate on Mcphee’s drafting. That’s what he does best, but at the same time if that means he’s fired, then I definitely agree.

  • Rob W.

Ritchie goes top 10 but i would love it if he was there at 13, the kids size is unreal

  • kuznetsy

    Sasha :(

  • Fedor

Jared McCann, Adrian Kempe or Ivan Barbashev, all centers.

  • Fedor

This. I would, however, consider trading down a few spots to maybe 17 or 18. Should be enough to land an extra second rounder for a change.

  • Jake Ettawakapow

LOL Freddy. Love the gifs you guys come up with. Pretty sure its Ian that comes up with these ones haha

  • Eric Schulz

There’s absolutely, no way, 100% not a chance Fleury drops to us; there’s no way he drops past 8… just like there’s no way, absolutely not a chance that Forsberg drops to us; I’m sad again.

  • Barrett

I have McCann and Barbashev going before 13. You think 13 is a slight reach for Kempe? I like his size and two way play, but all the mocks I’ve seen have him in the mid-20′s. I would be happy with any of those guys you listed. Depth at center in the developmental part of the organization is needed.

  • Fedor

Yeah, I think he’s a bit of a reach, but I don’t think mid-20s is fair, either. Again, I think they should trade down.

  • Myan

Call me crazy but I think we should package it up with one of our current forwards and trade for a Top 4 D. Roman Josi anyone?

  • DashingDave314
  • Myan

We don’t need another prospect on D, this current draft class is rumored to be relatively weak, and moving a roster forward gives our younger players a chance to get real ice time.

I’ve been watching Preds play all season. Josi plays 2nd most minutes against top lines, 40 points despite missing handful of games, -2 on a team whose forwards struggle to score. Those numbers are on par with, if not better than, Carlson.

  • DashingDave314

So why should we trade the pick? We need forwards (and centers) in the system. Not crazy about Josi’s possession numbers (even relative to the rest of his teammates). And the Predators would not do that deal. Would I consider trading down? Possibly. Might even be the smart thing to do unless the Capitals absolutely love someone who’s available. Would I trade my first round pick without getting one back? No.

  • Myan

We could easily acquire a forward for the system through trades. We need a Top 4 D now and it isn’t unfathomable for a team to not have a first round pick, especially in a supposedly shallow draft class. Predators have an abundance of defensive talent and a bunch of forwards that struggle to score. I live less than a mile from Bridgestone and I’ve watched them on a pretty regular basis. Just offered up a possible Top 4 D that we could get with a mutually beneficial trade.

  • Chris Cerullo

Roman Josi looks as good as he does because he plays with Shea Weber, who should win the Norris this year. I also don’t see Nashville pulling the trigger on that as they have him locked up relatively cheap for the future. Would I be opposed to it? Definitely not.

  • Myan

We probably don’t have anything that Nashville would really want but there has been a lot of rumblings around here (Nashville) about needing to acquire goal scoring forwards. The only assets other teams really want from Nashville are their defensemen which they have an abundance of.

  • Chris Cerullo

I think it all depends who their next hire is.

  • DashingDave314

Barbashev would need at least a year or two in the minors as well.

  • DashingDave314

This isn’t a shallow draft class though. If the Predators were going to move Josi, it would have to be for a controllable forward. That immediately eliminates Joel Ward. A first and Brouwer for Josi seems fair, but I still don’t think they’d accept that. Plus unless we want Wilson to be a top 6 forward next year, we’d be forced to grab another top 6 forward when we already need one (and that’s assuming Grabo is re-signed). MoJo+ maybe Carrick + and a 1st for somebody would make sense, but I don’t think the Predators would take that.

Not to mention I think Orlov will in the very near future be a capable top 4 D.

  • Myan

    Don’t crush my dreams! :(

I totally agree with you about Orlov. I truly believe that he will be a Norris trophy candidate in the next few years.

  • Semintheghost

Yea. I ment the juniors. ” More Russians , more fun” according to Dima

  • DashingDave314

What about Brouwer? *waits for Brouwer Rangers to murder me* *updates will*

  • Myan

Brouwer’s trade value is probably higher now than it’s ever been in his career sooooo…. *updates will*
