Here’s John Walton Calling the Playoffs for NBC Sports

Before he became the Caps’ radio play-by-play guy, John Walton did public announcements for the Cincinnati Reds and called three Hershey Bears Calder Cup championships. He’s already had a great career, but tonight he’s be calling the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs for NBC Sports. That’s a whole ‘nother level.

If you tuned into NBCSN, you heard the dulcet tones of @WaltonCaps telling the story of the Anaheim Ducks vs the Dallas Stars.

Here’s how John opened it all up. Of course he mentioned Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau, with whom Walton has a long history.

John didn’t have to wait long to call his first goal. Anaheim’s Kyle Palmieri scored two minutes into the game.

Later, former Hershey Bear and long-time Washington Capital, Mathieu Perreault scored. Just like the old days.

Congratulations, John. You deserve it.

Play-by-play: John Walton. Pretty cool.

It’s too bad Goring is so terrible.

His voice is like butter melting on top of a big ol’ pile of flapjacks, truly one of the best in the game

I miss watching Matty P play for the Caps.

I’ve been watching it with the sound off to reduce the emotional impact, and following your tweets instead.

The best radio announcer in the NHL and now he finally gets a chance to do his stuff on TV that isn’t college hockey. Great to see.

I just hope he’s not TOO good. We can’t be having no national network poaching our radio guy. Besides, what would Sabourin do?

Love love his voice! The way his enthusiasm and energy translates is unmatched by any announcer I’ve ever heard in any sport. Go, Mr. Walton! So proud of you!

  • Such feels ;_;

Bruce Boudreau, Matty P, Cody Eakin, Sergei Gonchar…

Please oh please don’t realize what a gem he is and steal him away from us.

I hope Boudreau does really really well. And Perrault. It puts pressure on Leonsis and Patrick to change AO and GMGM.

The other announcer, I guess Goring is his name, sounds like he is perpetually out of breath, like he went on a beer run and just had to walk up the stairs to the top of the arena.

This game made me feel all kinds of feels. The best coach I’ve seen as a Caps fan in the playoffs after we fired him. John Walton on the call was awesome. And TWO (2) second line centers that the Caps have traded away in the past three years. Woo.

i hope he gets a job at csn if Joe ever leaves
