There was once a straight-faced Matt Cooke for Lady Byng campaign, but he’s like the Lich from Adventure Time. You know he’s gonna do something awful; you just don’t know when.

Cut to: Monday might in Minnesota. Cookie went knee-on-knee with Colorado’s Tyson Barrie, injuring him. It was awful, the quintessence of Cooke.

Cooke was on the forecheck, with Barrie the last man back at the blue line. The puck was gone before Cooke stuck out his left leg, catching Barrie.

Barrie barrel-rolled and crashed into the boards. The injury was apparent immediately.

Barrie left the game.

Cooke received two minutes for kneeing.

I’d expect the Department of Player Safety to chime in soon. Cooke has a long and storied career of being a malignant little goblin, particularly when it comes to wrecking guys’ knees. Ian documented like 83 of them a while back. Time to add one more to the list.

Go Avs.

Update: The Wild won in overtime. Tyson Barrie will be out for a month.

He has ruined careers before. Don’t care if he’s “changed”, dude will forever be in my hate book and this only helps my reasoning.

The Wild are beating up the Avs 🙁

  • Last I heard from Savard, he’s still uncomfortable in bright rooms.

I may be seeing things, but in the first gif it looks like Cooke actually kicks his leg forward right before contact is made. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

He must have been hanging out with Brent Seabrook before the Easter weekend.

The fact that he missed a total of 0 games for borderline assault….

He tried pulling it on Fedorov but gets schooled lol

I don’t understand the instinct to stick out your knee, it has to hurt both guys, so why the urge to do it?

  • Shaun Phillips

Nope definitely looks like that. Looks like Barrie is going to get around him so he sticks his leg forward to make sure he clips him. He should miss the rest of the playoffs.

He tried to pull the same crap on niki a couple years ago when he was with the pens. He hit him but luckily there wasn’t an injury.

what a showboat Feds is with those yellow laces.

Look at the Don Cherry video halfway down. Even he was attacking cooke, though he did end the video talking about crosby.

It’s not about hurting the guy (or you), it’s about obstructing him. You try to hit him, then see him about to slip by you, you stick out whatever body part is easiest in order to get a piece of him and slow him down, in order to not get beat cleanly. It’s a reaction similar to high-sticking; every time a puck is lifted over heads, you’ll see multiple guys swinging their sticks directly above their heads to knock it down, even though it’s *never* been a good thing to swing your stick above your head (best case scenario: nothing happens).

    I blame the Penguins; enablers.
