Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward scored two goals at the World Championship on Saturday as Team Canada beat Slovakia, 4-1, marking the first and second international goals of his career.

Late in the second period, with the score 1-0 Slovakia, Ward deflected a blast by Jason Garrison past Slovakia’s Jan Laco.

Canada scored two more goals before Ward sealed the final with a late goal after Alex Burrows won a board battle.

After the game, Ward’s Canadian teammates congratulated him on Twitter:

With the win, Canada has a 1-0-1 record. They currently hold third place in Group A (next time, don’t lose to France!) and will play the Czech Republic on Monday.

”Joel Ward celebrates victory with teammates Ryan Ellis, Mark Scheifele and Nathan MacKinnon” The last guy is Morgan Rielly not MacKinnon

I know that, to quote Igor, rooting for Canada is “as classy as killing stray dogs,” but it’s a lot easier with Wardo on the team. Woo hoo! #VictoryLoaf #WithMapleSyrupOrSomething

Joel Ward is good people. I’m actually not actively rooting for Canada to lose in this tournament.

It’s a lot easier, too, due to the absence of a certain species of diving bird at Captain. During the Olympics I betrayed my country and rooted for… ulp… the Canadians for the sake of Jamie Benn and Lindy Ruff. It was totally worth the treason to see them come back with gold and a new outlook on life, and lead us into the playoffs, but man oh man, it wasn’t easy. Not with Crosby and Kunitz on board.

That is the best, worst announcing I’ve ever heard. Bravo

“Diving bird” works in more ways than one with Sid.
