Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby made a cameo in the latest issue of Washingtonian Magazine. In it, The Holtbeast explains where he feeds and where he, his wife, and fellow Holtbabies reside. I always assumed it was a cave-like dwelling, covered by brush and leaves, but apparently it is not.

I’ll let Holtby explain:

My teammate Jason Chimera told us about Old Town – he lives here, too. We liked it because it’s old, historic, fairly quiet for family life, but at the same time close to DC. It’s not the typical commercialized America – there are a lot of family-owned businesses. I have a son who’s two and another one on the way. My wife wanted to be able to walk places and have a lot of things she could do, because we’re on the road so much. We like walking to Firehook Bakery, King Street Blues, and the Torpedo Factory, but there are so many things we haven’t yet seen.

Because I’m from Frederick, Maryland — the greatest city not just in Maryland but the entire world — I’m not exactly sure where this “Old Town” is. By process of elimination, I assume it’s in or near DC. But when I think of Old Town I think of this.

Thanks to @ClancyKolzig for the pic and the heads up.

I work in Old Town and it’s a really nice City. They’ve even kept the original cobblestones on a few roads (don’t try to drive on them at speed, though…you’ll wreck your car)! But here’s a link to learn more about what’s here:

(I wish I knew where in Old Town Holtby and Chimera lived….I’d do some post-work drive-bys). 😀 (oh, I didn’t intend for that to sound so creepy)

  • If Holtby had “walk-up” music.

  • David

I had to double take as well on that one.. I was about to go wandering through the streets of frederick to see if I could find him out and about.

  • Katie Brown

Ian, I’m pretty sure Chris took you on a date or something there one time.

  • Brenna

Old Town is really quite lovely. I saw Holtby last weekend there when I was out for brunch! He was sitting two tables down from me, and as much as I wanted to say hello, he looked to be enjoying some quality time with the family. Maybe we’ll see more of him and Chimera out and about during the summer.

I live in Old Town! I actually think that Holtby’s wife was in my yoga class this morning but I can’t be sure since I don’t really know what she looks like. There was a blonde woman wearing a gray Capitals hat with 70 stitched onto the back and I’ve never seen one of those sold in stores.

If they walk to Firehook and the Torpedo Factory, I’m guessing they live in one of waterfront townhouses…hmmm!

  • DC Hockey Nut

Old Town Alexandria, contains my favorite Irish Pub, Murphy’s. At least when Pat Carroll is playing his one weekend a month there (he’s retired. ;D )

  • Brian L. McAfee

Chimer and Holtbeast live on the south side of Old Town, closer towards the WW bridge. James Carville and his wife, Mary Matalin, live on the north side (by a block or two).

  • Bilal

Oh wow! When I went to DC for the first time (Live in Toronto) Old Town is exactly where I was staying! I went in 2011, so it’s not too fresh in my mind, but it is a nice and peaceful city. If I ever decide to live in/near DC, Old Town would be an option

  • sheena dunn

She has a baby on Friday….

  • Myan

LOL ok that probably wasn’t her unless she’s superwoman!

Hood alumna here, double thumbs up for Frederick! Bushwaller’s was the place to hang out way back then (don’t even know if it’s still there). Loved walking downtown and to Baker Park. I never made it to Barbara Fritchie’s for some reason (still feel very unpatriotic about that). I’m a history geek so I was in heaven going to school there.

Old Town Alexandria is nice–all sorts of cute little shops and restaurants on King Street. The Torpedo Factory is a former munitions factory turned art studio where local artists sell their wares. And you can catch water taxis to Georgetown, the monuments, and National Harbor. I get down there periodically because the water taxis are fun (as are the minicruises), and it’s a nice way to kill a few hours on a Saturday.

Ian old town is in alexandria and kind of like if georgetown shrank shorter and got cuter… like georgetown had a bsby and that bsby was only 1 year old.. so small and cute haha

Here, too! Class of ’94. I loved Olde Towne. And Bushwallers. And 101 (which is not there any more). There should be an RMNB Frederick Pub Crawl or sumthin.

On topic: I am going to keep assuming that the Beast lives in a magical moss-covered cave with his Beauty and Beast-cubs. Otherwise I might be tempted to make way too many trips to Old Town.

  • Me and Chris don’t go out on “dates.” They are “blog outings.”

  • Steve

She birthed a Holtbaby… She has to be.

  • Well played.

  • “There should be an RMNB Frederick Pub Crawl or sum thin.” Let’s just show up to Peter’s unannounced. I’m sure he won’t mind.

  • Oh Yea…

Ran into Holtby at Whole Foods a few months back…super nice guy.

  • Yes, now I totally understand.

  • Shaun Phillips

Love Old Town and the Torpedo Factory. My wife and I got our wedding rings designed by one of the artists there (Cynthia is awesome!). Next time we’re back in town, I’m going to go volunteer with the Alexandria Archaeology group that has their lab in the factory. There’s also Medieval Madness in Old Town (medieval dinner theatre group, lot of fun) which has some fantastic beers and meads. And don’t forget about Bryan “Bugsy” Watson’s sport’s bar (Bugsy’s) on King Street. Lots of great old Caps and hockey memorabilia and a blast to watch any games at.

I used to live at 24 S. Market (above Wag’s) for a few years after I graduated. Migrated south to Takoma Park/Silver Spring, have been here ever since.

  • Taz

Bushwallers is still around? Very good to hear!

  • Taz

Class of ’89. And I, too, migrated to Silver Spring a few years after graduation and have been here ever since. Let’s hear it for Hoodlum RMNB Caps fans!

  • Sarah

I’m so jealous guys can do stuff like this without worrying they’ll wind up in a ditch.
I guess you have Georgia to defend you too.

  • Tamara Goehler

My husband and I have seen Braden and Jason In OT, that’s where we live also.

  • Jay DeLancey

hahaha not the Tavern! I used to live right next to that place.

  • serpent

Silver Spring over Frederick??!! Really??!! My condolences, hon.

  • I go maybe once a year, and that’s enough.

  • Seth

Not to mention the late night pizza buffet. Nothing better after watching a game and imbibing copious amounts of alcohol than stuffing your face on never ending pizza.

  • Graham Dumas
  • Brittany

Guess maybe my old boss who lives in Alexandria wasn’t lying when he said Jason Chimera’s son was on his son’s hockey team.
Also, the Torpedo Factory is the best!

  • Catherine__M

Love the Old Town love! It’s actually been a pretty popular place for Caps over the years, and I can’t say I disagree with them one single bit! <3 (Resident since 2005).

  • NewmaJe

I work in Old Town and live (most of the time) there too! It’s pretty awesome. More of the Caps should live there! This is FANTASTIC news. Thanks for reporting!
