Free Agency Frenzy Open Thread 2014

NHL teams have had an extra handful of days to talk to players before free agency officially begins, so some are expecting today to be more bananas than usual. Considering the first day of free agency is traditionally already pretty bananas, I’m not sure I’m ready for the sheer volume of bananas we’re about to see.

Who’s gonna get the most ridiculous contract of the day? I’m gonna say Ryan Miller. Which defender will the Caps take? I’ve got no clue. Who’s gonna make a crazy trade? Probably Hextall.

Follow all the madness below. The comments should be fun. Please go GIF bananas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmbcbRHEX1o Here’s my free agency video if you missed it earlier!

  • Jimmie

Okay. I’m here. I’m a Caps fan and I’m ready for my Free Agentmas Lump of Coal.

  • Guest

I want Greiss, Ehrhoff, and Matty P

  • Luke Anthony

Unreal. Jim Neal has acquired two legit top centers in a matter of two years and Seguin was one of the best players in the league last year. If only the Caps had somebody like Nill maybe we wouldn’t be looking for a 2C every summer.

  • ringtail

Can we get Matty P back? (I know, fat chance or however you say that in French-Canadian.)

  • Chris Cerullo

Just do something that 75% of us will like. Thanks. K bye.

  • Brandon Steele

I would love to get niskanen or ehrhoff along with a good first line winger, it seems we havent had one since semin. I know we are also looking for a vet goalie and Tim Thomas would be sweet to have.

  • Phil

Well with Dallas getting Spezza, that takes a 2C landing spot off the field. Yay for slightly increased chances of getting Stastny or grabo.

  • Eric Jones

    Spezza to Dallas

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    you’re right and I apologize

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

bro I already GOT that one

  • Josh Carey

I really hope that the lack of signing Grabo doesn’t mean GMBM is going to give Niskanen/Ehrhoff some absurd contract. Cause that Caps could easily have kept Grabo and gotten Ehrhoff.

  • Sarah

  • Big Chuck

I’m getting the first date sweats from just sitting here in anticipating

  • Phil

Washington supposedly in on Dan Boyle: per Dreger

  • Jack Conness

    #BringBackMattyP

  • Chris

    #WhynotDCStastny? (along w/ 2 D of course)

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    I’ll take it.

  • Eric Jones

I really want to watch The Lion King now

  • Chris

    See ya Mikey..

  • Phil

Boyle cheaper than Erhoff giving us room for stastny….i can dream right?

  • yv

Watching World Cup and keeping an eye on NHL feed, who will score first goal Messi or Caps?! Before the frenzy will start and after reading that Grabo will test free market I just want to remind Grabo that if you like to work somewhere maybe it is better to take less and be happy where you are belong? Otherwise, it could be a repeat story of Mike Ribeiro.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett
  • Sarah

Me too, since Peter got that started. I watch it like every five years or so and I’m always surprised again at just how good it is.
Especially when you combine it with hockey! Forgive my Stars-related celebration, y’all know how much I love the Caps too. Fingers crossed that Mac can be Washington’s “creepy little monkey.”

  • guest

    No, don’t do it GMBM

  • Sarah

Peter, stop saying “No one will go out with me.” You’re a free agent! And there’s plenty of interest in you so stop being negative.

  • starsandbeyond

I’m pretty sure Orpik shouldn’t be targeted for a hard run, given his concussion history.

  • Robert Bise

B’s? Free Agent Day… *nervous anxiety*

  • Fletcher22

Beat me to it. Wasn’t the Seguin trade 12 months ago? Nill gets extra credit for that.

  • Topher Gee

I had a dream we grabbed Erhoff and Perrault and let Grabo go… Wouldnt that be fun.

  • yv

ernhof for 1 year for just 4M in Pens by Mckenzee

  • Owen Johnson
  • Chris
  • guest

yet the caps couldn’t sign him

  • Sarah

Also, this is really random, but bees and bananas are (seriously) a disastrous combination:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_bee_pheromones

See “Alarm pheromone.” My family used to raise bees so #flashbacks

  • Josh Carey

I’m sure it was because it’s the Pens. Doubt he would have done that anywhere else.

  • orlovme

    Ehrhoff is a penquin….NOOOO!!!

  • Owen Johnson

I would love Matty P back, but Grabo is better.
Having both would be AMAZING though.

  • yv

    Stralman officially available. rangers out.

  • Jimmie

    Dangit.

  • guest

.@FriedgeHNIC says on Sportsnet that Matt Niskanen's contract should be done within the hour.— Adam Vingan (@AdamVingan) July 1, 2014

    I think probably caps

  • Luke Anthony

Ehrhoff signs for one year at 4 million, watch us give somebody on the wrong side of 30 a multiple year deal.

  • guest

    Brooks Orpik

  • Josh Carey

I agree. My money is on 4 years 22.5M.

  • Connor

would be happy with Fayne, Boyle, and 2c. Fayne and Boyle wouldn’t bee too high. Could go after statsny with that kind of money left

  • Guest

    Probably, but possibly higher

  • Chris

    Fayne to Edm. just reported

  • Owen Johnson
  • Chris
  • Josh Carey

Anything over 5.5m per year and I’ll be really upset. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 6+ though.

  • Jack Conness

Dan Boyle > Brooks Orpik #DONTSIGNORPIK

  • Connor

welp cya Fayne. Boyle, Nisaknen, Orpik?

  • Guest

Get ready to be upset, they’ll blow there space on him and hiller

  • yv

Fayne also out for Oilers 14M for 3y

  • Tony Fajardo

    sign both!!!!

  • Josh Carey

    I’m afraid you’re probably right.

  • Phil

    Boyle to Leafs 2 yrs @ $9M

  • Connor

Habs closing in on Boyle. I could live with niskanen for long term just can’t be 7 years AND 6.5 million

  • Barrett

That Malhotra signing pisses me off….a lot.

  • Guest

At that point I would rather just have Orpik and Niskanen

  • Amykins

    Nope. Nopenopenopenope. Nope.

  • Josh Carey

    Source?

  • Jerry Collender

    that is actually not true

  • Phil

Bob McKenzie; dont have twitter at work or I would have put it up.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    Not legit.

  • Connor

Boyle getting driven up. Looks like if we get anyone it will be Niskanen or Orpik

  • Josh Carey

I follow him. He hasn’t tweeted it.

  • Phil

    your right….my fault yall

  • Barrett

Orpik with Green, why not? Dan Boyle ? No!

Rather have Willie Mitchell or Robidas or Stralman though.

  • guest

    a fake account tweeted it

  • yv

If 5 yrs true hopefully that it is not crazy Caps:
    Larry Brooks@NYP_Brooksie
Brian Boyle also has at least one five-year offer, we’re told…

  • Josh Carey

Woah. Chad Johnson 2 years 1.3/year…That’s a steal. Wonder if we can get Peters that cheap.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    I think we could. Hoping.

  • Connor

chuck gormly reports caps and niskanen are very close…….

  • guest

Apparently close to landing Niskanen according to Gormley

  • Josh Carey

Everyone start praying we don’t overpay.

  • Chris Cerullo

I really do not want Niskanen or Orpik…. :(

  • guest

    jinx

  • Connor

im gonna scream if its more than 5 mil on a 7 year term

  • Chris

While neither are the second coming, I gotta think a top 6 that has those 2 vs Hillen/Erskine/InsertAHLDhere is a vast improvement. (given the right term and its not an overpayment)

  • Chris Cerullo

    I’m thinking more money wise

  • Connor

that was a retweet on a fake LeBrun RMNB. Niskanen not to wings

  • Barrett

Not if it means our #2C and #3C are anyone on the current NHL or AHL roster.

  • Brackaphobia

Justin Peters signed for 2 yrs

  • Connor

TBL offering Niaskanen 7 years 49 million accruing to Hockey Insider. God thats awful

  • Chris Cerullo

    We just signed Justin Peters

  • Jimmie

Am I wrong for really wanting Stralman over Niskanen (or anyone else available at this point)?

  • Barrett

We found our backup Peter! Yes!

  • Josh Carey

If the whole TB offering 7×7 for him is true, then no. You are not wrong.

  • Chris
  • Sarah

Yeah, people bash Thomas these days but God has he been playing behind some crummy defenses. He’s still very good, and he’s a tremendous professional who, despite his elite career, doesn’t generate needless drama over playing backup… unlike some veteran goalies currently on the free agent market…

  • Searle

Happy with that. Cheap and cheerful, sends no signal other than Holtbeast is the man in DC. Leaves room for other signings….. please make other signings…..

  • Jimmie

I’d take Stralman over Nisky even at fewer years and less money. 7×7 for anyone in this free agent crop is a little nutso.

  • Chris

    Josh Gorges to Buffalo..

  • Connor

    Legwand connected to caps,…

  • Chris
  • Josh Carey

That literally makes no sense. Unless they’re struggling to stay above the cap floor. Doesn’t matter to me, didn’t want him anyway.

  • Jimmie

    Hmmm…

  • guest

Josh Gorges just went to Buffalo for a 2nd rounder in 2016.

There goes that pipe dream! Looks like Buffalo will be finishing higher than us this year!

  • Connor

still not solution to 2C. at his age he would be 3C. Where does that put Fehr? Laich? no idea

  • Luke Anthony

God damn it, Peters? Greiss >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Peters

  • Chris

You can guarantee they will flip him for a 1st rd pick in next yrs draft at some point #TankforMcDavidANDEichel

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

Let’s see the salary. Could be a steal.

  • Bonzaichkin

    Stastny to the Blues :(

  • Searle

The idea is probably to put Legwand, Laich, MoJo and Kuzya’s pictures all on a dartboard, close your eyes and whichever one you hit first is number 2 C for the season

  • Josh Carey

    noooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Chris

    4yr/28M

  • HunterVT

TSN is listing $500K per year, that’s a damn good deal.

  • Searle

    St Louis got Stastny!

  • Josh Carey

Wait 1.9 for Peters…is that per year or total?

  • guest

Not bad deal for Peters, 950k AAV

  • Chris
  • Bonzaichkin

Another DMan off the list, Gilbert to MTL

  • Connor

5 years 5 mill for camalleri? eeek

  • Sarah

There’s one major anxiety down. #TeamMac

  • Connor

5 mill a year to clarify

  • Jerry Collender

is niskanen signed with the caps???

  • yv

After Gilbert also out to Mon. That seems destined Caps to Nisk and Orpik or Stralman. Grabo still available.

  • Chris

    Not reported yet..

  • HunterVT

TSN is listing $500k per year, but that could change. it’s obviously possible that they could be wrong at this point.

  • Bonzaichkin

Stoner also just signed to Bruce’s Ducks, so yet another dman down.

  • Chris
  • Connor

Oh man we are going to seriously overpay for D

  • yv

Boyle for 2 yr to Rangers

  • Luke Anthony

True, I’ve just always been huge Greiss fan, wouldn’t go beyond 1.5 million though. Has way more potential in my mind.

  • Jimmie
  • Josh Carey

Just because we have the money to give Niskanen a 7×7 or more contract doesn’t mean we should. I’m panicking.

  • Chris
  • Cole-rod

Any word on Stralman? Rather have him than Niskanen

  • Barrett

    I’ll take that as a 3C.

  • Bonzaichkin

Mason Raymond to the Flames 3 yr/$9.5mil

  • Owen Johnson

I’m okay with Peters. Now if he can only play FOR the Caps like he always did AGAINST the Caps in his ~20 starts this year, we’ll be in good shape.

  • yv

If Caps sign big crazy contract, then, hopefully, at-least, w/o NMC/NTC.
0:0 in ARG-SWI, Caps have chance to score first before Messi.

  • Brackaphobia

Dan Boyle is off the market. Fingers crossed for Niskanen because he isn’t Orpik.

  • Searle

The cats have signed Dave Bolland

  • Connor

    i can just feel a 7/year 49min NTC clause coming……..

  • Connor

    mill

  • Amykins

    But…

  • Jack Conness

Holy crap. The Panthers signed Bolland to a 5 year – $25 million deal. HAHAHA. That’s why they suck every year. That’s horrendous.

  • Jack Conness

Agreed. That would be an awful contract to have on the books.

  • yv

The less active teams probably hiding their desire to get #1 lottery pick next year?

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    BAD NEWS INCOMING

  • Jerry Collender

    orpik to caps

  • Searle

    NOOOOO IT’S HAPPENING!

  • Connor

    son of a bitch

  • Sarah

Jim Nill is the man. It helps, of course, that we have:
The best burritos in the country (burritos > smart guys)
    No snow
    No income tax
Coaching sanity in the form of Lindy Ruff
Nice fans who almost never boo anything, and even then it’s just the east coast transplants, not the whole crowd
Ugly new uniforms and West Nile, but you can’t have everything

  • Jimmie
  • Barrett

Holding out to see what the $$$ is before saying Orpik deal is bad.

  • Brackaphobia
  • Bilal

okay………..this is making me develop anxiety

  • yv

    MG52 got his partner

  • Jimmie

Please someone tell me “Orpik” was just a typo and someone meant to write “Stralman”. Stralman kind of looks like Orpik, right? Right?! I mean, you just have to squint a little and tilt your he—

    Oh, God…

    *weeps*

  • Austin

Orpik to Caps. Am I the only person who is not upset with this?

  • guest

Any more than about $2 or 3 mill and yes

  • Alex

I’m not upset, at least not yet

  • Jerry Collender

I don’t get why so many fans are upset. Can someone explain?

  • Chris

    Ryan Miller to Van

  • Austin

as long as it isn’t to much money I am fine.

  • Jimmie

One year, a buck fitty? I’m in. More than that, bad deal.

  • http://twitter.com/1bscarbro Benjamin Scarbro
  • Connor

anyone here how much and term for orpik. i know its going to be devastating and ruin my entire week

  • yv

Oil money playing big in Dallas , looks like they adding Hemsky also.

  • Eric Jones

Maybe Reirden is still working for the Penquins and this is all part of a greater plan to ruin the Capitals.

  • Chris Cerullo

Orpik is horrid. Literally every sign available to us points to him declining and declining fast.

  • HunterVT

He’s already showing signs of slowing down at 33 and for a physical player like him the entire drop off will likely come sooner than later. He’s going to be our new Erskine in about 18 months.

  • Fletcher22

Nope. Haven’t heard the term of $ but I think it’s a great deal.

  • Searle

If Orpik is #6 D and we sign Stralman then I take back everything I’ve shouted at my computer in the last ten minutes. If Orpik is getting paid the big bucks then we’re in trouble

  • Luke Anthony

Plan the parade. Peters and Orpik put this team back into the elite group.

  • Austin

I am not reading all of those stats right now, could you just sum it up? a dude up the page said he is declining. okay well even if he is, do you honestly think that we have any better D besides carlson alzner and green? I dont think carrick is good, neither is erskine, and hillen like wtf why is he even on our team. our prospects have awhile to go like bowey but I am fond of Orlov

  • Bonzaichkin

Stars not done yet, sign Hemsky 3yrs/$4mil

  • Bilal

    damn, they’re going ham

  • Austin

exactly It adds some veteran presence and it makes our blue like not look so much like a damn ” high end” AHL squad.

  • Luke Anthony

Lindback too. Nill is some kind of dark wizard or something, god has he transformed that team.

  • Austin

see I disagree, I think he can do much more defensively and offensively then Erskine could, but I guess time will tell

  • Jimmie

Shorter stats: the team would be better off with pretty much anyone at Hershey than Orpik.

  • Chris Cerullo

Have you seen his extraskater page? It’s potentially blinding. He’s declining fast.

  • Austin

I wouldn’t go that far lol… but i do think it does help the caps at the very least.

  • Searle

Dallas are getting a bit scary. Imagine how good it would feel to be a Dallas fan right now

  • Bilal

Orpik in my opinion is an upgrade of what we have, but it BETTER not be more then 2 years at like 2/3 million. If its the big bucks then imma sit in my room and cry in the corner. I wouldn’t mind him as a 6 D, but we still need a top 4 D and Orpik ain’t it.

  • Luke Anthony

Greiss just went for $1M. And they chose Peters. Unreal.

  • Bonzaichkin

PIT also picked up Comeau for 1yr/700k

  • Luke Anthony

I was kidding, we aren’t that much better a team then we were yesterday.

  • Josh Carey

I like Peters more than Greiss.

  • Barrett

2 years @ $3-3.5mil per max. That gives us two years to see if Bowey can reach the NHL.

  • Chris
  • Austin

Well I again disagree, not with the stats but the stats relative to his future effect on the caps. As long as the deal was not to wild in terms of money I think it was only a plus for the caps. Giving him big bucks is stupid and I think we could both agree on that.

  • HunterVT

I really don’t think Griess is a huge upgrade over Peters. In fact I’d say Peters was the more impressive player last year behind Carolina’s suspect defense.

  • Connor

WHY AM I HEARING 5 YEARS FOR ORPIK

  • Brenna

    what??? source?

  • Bilal

    NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONOONOONO

  • Chris Cerullo

    Matthew Barnaby just tweeted it

  • HunterVT

Well, it looks like Dallas is accepting fan applications.

  • Connor

    matthew barnaby

  • Barrett

    Nooooooooooo!!!!

  • Josh Carey

If it’s 2M or less per year, I’m not unhappy.

  • Connor

    1.5 mill for 5 i wouldn’t care

  • Guest

Well everyone who saw all the talk I had on this comment section about Orpik being a good deal UNLESS it was big bucks… If this 5 years thing is true and its big bucks I am going to give GMBM A BIG THUMBS DOWN.

  • Chris Cerullo

Deals like those ^^ do not exist.

  • yv

9.2M$ for 2 GTs, compare to 2.8M$ in Caps.

  • Guest

Yea if its small money its not a problem he just does not deserve big bucks

  • Connor

OH MY FUCK 5 YEAR 27MILLION

  • Michael

    5 years 27.5 Mil

  • Chris Cerullo

WTF 5 YEAR 27.5 OH MY GOD NO THATS HORRID

  • Searle

    I feel sick.

  • Bilal

WHY THE SHIT IS BROOKS ORPIK MAKING 5.5 MILLION A YEAR

  • mspeer
  • Jack Conness

That Orpik deal is awful. I just threw up. I’m done. DAMMIT.

  • Barrett

Might as well get it started….

    #fireGMBM

  • Jimmie

I’m…stunned. I honestly thought I’d get a lump of coal for Free Agentmas. Instead I got a giant lump of cow dung, slightly polished, and no freaking receipt.

  • Luke Anthony

This is a joke. 5 years for a player turning 34 in September. I hate everything.

  • Josh Carey

If you were going to do that, why not just spend 2.5M more and get Niskanen…

  • yv

Dont worry Caps fan. This is all Teds plan of getting #1 lottery pick next year (see Ovi in 2004).

  • Jack Conness

Well, if you saw the actual deal, I assume you are pretty pissed now.

  • Chris
  • Barrett

$5 mil per year is too much for a 30yr old 2C, but a 5 year $27mil deal for a 33yr old D is good? GMBM is an idiot.

  • Michael

How soon can you buy someone out LOL….But in all seriousness fuuucccckkkk

  • Connor

    ERHOFF 1 year 4mill, ORPIK 5 years 5.5 LOLOLOLOL

  • yv

MP to Jets 3 for 3

  • 70Caps

It would be so funny if he won the norris after all this.

  • djlotus

This is absurd. Let Grabbo go but give Orpik this deal?! Are you kidding me?!

  • Barrett

    He won’t when he’s 38.

  • HunterVT

I’d say that’s true now. He does bring a little bit more offensively, but neither guy brings much to the table there.

And he’s better defensively for the time being, but he’s been dropping off rapidly over the past two seasons. What little speed he has seems to be going and he’s getting routinely walked by wingers. It was REALLY evident on the big ice in the Olympics and I worry that we’re a year or two away from it becoming quite evident on the small ice too.

  • Michael Blaesing

Well, we’ve singlehandedly cornered the market on players named “Brooks”

  • Jimmie

With or without a permanent GM, the Penguins always seem to make great off-season moves. They ditch overpriced Orpik and add a phenomenal D for a one-year test drive. They get a really solid 2G for a bargain price. What’s next?

  • Jack Conness

THE JETS JUST GOT MATTY P FOR 3 YEARS, $9 MIL AND WE GAVE ORPIK 5 YEAR AND $27 MIL. WHAT THE FFFFFFFF. I AM SOOOOOOOO PISSED.

  • djlotus

Which is exactly why we shouldn’t have hired from in-house.

  • Tim

I was excited about today. I was glued to the live updates and hoped for some good news. After the Orpik signing I am done. Turning off the computer and doing something else. This team has disappointed me for 30+ years!!!

  • yv

    11.5+ M$ in Green-Orpik pair?!

  • Bilal

You know those memes, that go “when you see it, you’ll shit bricks”?
Replace “see” with “hear” and thats pretty much what happened to me

  • Searle

    Welcome to the @washcaps Brooksy!! #Orpik— Brooks Laich (@brookslaich) July 1, 2014

Two team destroying contracts meeting for the first time

  • djlotus

If Brooks Laich is excited, we are doomed.

  • Alex

I’m gonna hold off on passing judgment on the Orpik deal. I wanna see if our new coaching staff and new system revitalizes him at all. Perhaps there’s still some gas left in the tank? Time to earn that money Brooksie

  • Pat Magee

    I miss McPhee.

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

Orpik 5 years 2 @27? So much for the MacLellan era.

  • Connor

    you’re nuts

  • Amykins

    *sigh*

  • djlotus

And perhaps Brooks Laich will fill in nicely as a 2C. Do you see the shame in that statement.

  • Alex

    Thank you

  • Austin

I agree. I really feel like we have to see the new squad under Trotz in action. BUT i do agree that upfront the deal with Oprik does look awful since its so much money but you never know.

  • Chris Cerullo

    I just don’t even…

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

    the terms are not good

  • Searle

At least Oates and his awful system have gone, otherwise the two Brooks’ would skate into each other and put each other, and $9 mill out for the season!

  • Austin

How much money do we still have left to spend?

  • djlotus

    $7.32

  • Josh Carey

    $6.2 by rough estimation.

  • Barrett

    $6.2mil

  • Bilal

    I think aroudn 6.2

  • Guest

    :(

  • Alex

It does look awful on paper, I’ll give you that. The ends will justify the means (hopefully)

  • Austin

Okay thanks for the 4 replies guys lol but we still have room for another D! dont give up hope yet until the deals are done

  • djlotus

Was hoping we were picking up Orpik in order to package him with someone else in a trade down the road. :/

  • Bilal

I get a sick feeling that the deals ARE done

  • Josh Carey

I think we need one more player.

  • Bilal

and who would want a 33 year old D for 5 years at 5.5 a year?

  • Austin

yea its that Caps feeling that has been nailed in our minds since the McPhee era TRUST me I feel ya.

  • ThrowmetheWHIP

Did we just loose to the penguins for the 5th time this year?

  • Cole-rod

That contract renders him untradeable. No one else will want to take him on at his age and that price.

  • DustinPenncakes

    Buffalo would take him.

  • Eric Jones

    only the caps

  • Austin

    LOL

  • Bilal

    true…………….maybe they’d want laich too?

  • Jerry Collender

    hiller 2 years to CGY

  • Chris Cerullo

I just don’t understand how people paid a lot of money to make big decisions like this for a franchise can be this idiotic. Mind boggling. I’d seriously rather just poll RMNB for future management decisions.

  • Eric Jones

Two up-votes. One for your comment, and one for your Indy photo.

  • Jimmie

Really good to see Matty P go to a team that wants him and will pay him what he’s worth. Good dude. Good hockey player. Makes his lines better. Works his tail off.

  • PWong

If the Caps can pay that much for a 33 (going on 34) yr old D-man then they can can cover my game-center subscription to keep me watching from CA.

  • Sarah

Yes, come to the dork side! We have good burritos!

  • H70

We have 27.5 mil for Orpik and can’t afford Grabo?

  • silentmachine

I hadn’t even thought about that but yeah that is incomprehensible to me that we couldn’t meet Grabo but can spare 27.5/5 for an aging defenseman on his downswing. Because we’re so low on 6/7 D men I guess?? What the hell

  • Jimmie

Taking suggestions for the hockey team to root for that’ll actually make me happy this year.

  • Fletcher22

I like both players, but I don’t think either will live up to the contracts they just signed.

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

Does anyone feel just completely defeated?

  • djlotus

I dont get it. We lose Grabbo and gain Orpik and somehow that makes us a better team.

  • Austin

Yea the deal was good until I saw the 27.5M….

  • Jimmie

One other random thought. GMBM says the money might not work out for Grabo, but…Orpik? How, exactly, is that a remotely intelligent professional hockey thought?

  • Josh Carey

This is worse than losing to the Rangers in the semis a few years back.

  • Routine Lurker

    The Penguins, apparently.

  • Donbail

I feel physically sick right now.

  • CSA

How could you not. Same old shit different day with this team. So much for the change in management. I really hope they have something up their sleeve but even then I’m sure it wont help…..

  • Josh Carey

    Based on today, the Stars.

  • Connor

    Vanek to wild

  • Sarah

Jimmie, your comments today are killing funny! Sigh… thank you. I too try to stay upbeat and would rather laugh than weep. I’ll still hold out hope that the Orpik contract doesn’t look like as big a disaster as it seems right now, we do have Barry Trotz in town now and hopefully he can make this work. But in the meantime… God bless you for keeping me entertained.

  • Jimmie
  • Chris Cerullo

I feel like a child that just gave the ice cream man $5 for a Spongebob popsicle, but instead of handing me the ice cream, he threw it directly in my face with enough impact to damage me for multiple years.

  • Searle

I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that phone call

“BROOKS ORPIK? AGED 37? EARNING $5.5M A YEAR? WAIT A SEC IMMA JUST PUT YOU ON SPEAKER CAN YOU SAY THAT AGAIN”

  • AO

    Preach.

  • Sarah

I’d love not to be the only person in the Stars/Caps fan club! Come on over!

  • JH

Why are you so down about this? I think Orpik will prove you wrong.

  • AO

Yes. It honestly ruined my day.

I can see the Caps using the rest of that 6 mil on Legwand for 8 years.

  • Austin

    agreed.

  • Jack Conness

It’s like my mom buying me a brand new PS2 for this upcoming Christmas. Like WTF?

  • PWong

A s a new Orange County resident I’ms just gonna focus on Bruce and the Ducks, ya know, until the inevitable 1st/2nd round booting thing…

  • Brenna
  • Barry

Countdown to the second Washington Capitals buyout next summer.

  • PWong

I was a NorthStars/Caps fan as a kid, may hafta take up their southern version

  • mspeer

Why so much money? And for so long? Why? There are no answers. It is all vanity – grasping at wind.

  • Tim

Any chance they could fire GMBM and use the compliance buyout on Orpik?

  • djlotus

I was under the impression that the buyouts had to be used this offeseason or they were lost.

  • Super43

I Imagine we are the fans the then penguins are Brock Lesner in this…

    https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/8138490880/hB68BEB76/

  • OptimusCrime

Caps re-sign Latta for two years. Best signing of the day

  • Josh Carey

It’s mind blowing that no one in this organization including Ted, coaches and the front office stepped in and said “hey, what you’re doing is stupid.”

The worst thing that could have happened to the Capitals it seems is Reirden’s hiring.

  • DustinPenncakes

    You’re right.

  • pixiestix

so what will Orpik’s nickname be since we already have a Brooksie? Orpie? Orpikie?

  • Connor

    any news on niskanen?

  • Searle

I thought we would pull something out the bag and be out of Doom and Gloom….

  • DustinPenncakes

Well I think Green and Laich are off the hook for worst contract on the books now.

  • James Desautels

Yeah this is not a good start to the new regime. I’m not even sure McPhee signs Orpik.

  • Josh Carey

Last I heard he was going to look over his offers and make up his mind later in the day.

  • Tim

    Epic, as in epic disaster!

  • Bonzaichkin

    I heard Detroit, 6 years

  • PWong

    turd ferguson…ie

  • Josh Carey

    Source?

  • djlotus

    Cap Killer

  • Connor

we are going to do something stupid like sign legwand for 5 years 5 million, be done for the day. and have a 4 person rotation at 2c

  • Sarah

Herbal Essences commercial good. But I’m not giving up on the Caps.

  • HunterVT

Do you honestly think Orpik will be worth $5.5M at 38? I don’t think he’s worth that now. His 35-38 seasons will be like having Erskine, but paying him 250% of Erskine’s salary, which was already an overpayment.

  • silentmachine

Stars or the Blues are looking pretty great.

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

    [salary]

  • James Desautels

We throw suitcases of cash at Orpik before we address the large gaping hole at 2-3C. I am against Orpik in general but I would have swallowed it at like 3 years and we put the $5M at Grabo. How are we going to make $6M work between Grabo and a Legwand or comparable 3C?

  • Jimmie

“The fans aren’t saying ‘Boo’, they’re saying ‘Booroo…no, they’re saying ‘Boo'”

  • yv

Babcock pressing hardly on GM to get RH Dman, since DRW doesn’t have any. So, it’d be not surprising if they will offer big contract to Niskanen.

  • OptimusCrime

    It looks like the C’s are gonna be 1Backstrom 2Kuzy 3Laich 4Latta.
This looks ok if Kuzya can actually play C

  • Jimmie

Short answer is we’re not. We threw 1D money at a 4D (at best) and we’ll scrounge our current roster and whatever we have at Hershey to fill the middle.

Because everyone knows you never, ever, ever build a winning hockey team up the middle.

  • JH

He is way more talented than Erskine.

  • djlotus

    exactly

  • Cole-rod

Stralman? Who’s in the mix?I hope we’re not satisfied with just Orpik.

  • Pat Magee

Let’s hope Trotz is the defenseman whisperer.

  • Ben

Other than the contact, I think the Orpik move was perfect.. Trotz needs an older defenseman to be an example to all of these young d-men that didn’t do a good job last year. He actually plays defense too, unless I’m mistaken.. We haven’t done much of that in the last couple years.. At least they’re trying! You Washington fans can never be pleased, take a step back and look at yourselves.

  • Bonzaichkin

    Jul 1
    Perreault,
    Mathieu
    C
    Anaheim
    Washington
    $9M
    3
    $3M

  • Bonzaichkin

What a tease, TSN, what a tease.

  • Jimmie

Other than the iceberg, the Titanic voyage was perfect. The shipping line needed a big liner to prove that big luxury liners could be a commercial success.

  • Alex

They’ll be called “Brooks Brothers”, and they’ll always be smartly-dressed.

  • Austin

Yea I completely understand why you and everyone else would be worried statistically. The way I see it though If the caps dont go to the cup in the next 2 or 3 years anyway then Orpik’s contract does not even matter. The prime of our core players like ovie and backstrom is fading as we both know, so thinking five years from now is pointless IMO.

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

Paying too much for old guys and then trying a promising guy at a new position… sounds like GMGM never left Washington.

  • Barrett

I think about 10 regular posters/contributors to this site could do better than what GNBM has done since the draft.

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

This Orpik deal is probably what we get for hiring the assistant GM and expecting change. There had better be something bigger in the works. Why are the caps breaking my heart in July?!

  • Searle

This is why we can’t have nice things/Grabovski. He’s a smart guy for waiting for the dust to settle before resigning.

If anyone wants to know another better player we could have got for less money, Matt Moulson signed with BUF for $5m/5 years per. Would have been great on the top line with OV and Backy

  • Jimmie

So, this is what the year before the year before the rebuilding year looks like, huh?

  • JH

I’m confused. Everyone has been agitating for a solid blueliner. We get one and everyone freaks out and then changes the conversation to how we don’t have a 2C. I thought D was our main problem. There aren’t that many D men to choose from. They command a premium. Chill, people.

PS: And quit lamenting over MattyP; he never had that much of an impact when he was here and gets pushed around.

  • Johnny Hot Pockets

    that was a phenomenal pun

  • A

    niskanen is next up

  • ryan

dont worry guys the next signing willl be a nice 3 year deal of either Eichel, McDavid or. Barzal

  • Ben

Perfect example… Take a step back, this is hockey! Not a national disaster.. Even if this deal goes sour, what’s the worst that could happen? We didn’t trade future assets for Brooks.. We just spent money that we’ll have back in a few years.. Honestly the caps are lucky we have Ovi. Any other team in the same position would be in full fledged rebuild mode. We’re trying to get veteran guys who can help us make a deep run, get over yourselves.

  • Barrett

Done with the Capitals for today. On to USA soccer!

  • Guest

He’s 33. Massively declining. He’s earning $5.5 million dollars per year. Until he’s 38. It’s an insane contract. I would have accepted up to about $2.5 mill, but this is insane.

  • Connor

hockey insider: niskanen down to TBL and Caps

  • Barrett

Or a 3 year extension for Erskine

  • Ryan

dont say it, it may happen lol

  • djlotus

Did Del Zotto get signed yet?

  • HunterVT

He is, but that won’t matter when he has Erskine’s footspeed. He struggled with gap control this year, and I can’t see that improving. Orpik certainly has better hands than Erskine, can make a better breakout pass, and he brings more physicality too. The issue is that his mobility is falling off in a manner similar to Erskine.

At 32 Erskine wasn’t fast, but he had enough mobility to keep up with the play and not be a complete liability. At 34, he lacks the foot speed to maintain gap control. Even if he was more skilled, he still lacks the minimum agility he would need to play defense effectively.

Orpik looks very similar to Erskin at 32 in terms of agility. Like Erskine, he’s played a very physical style for a lot of years, making him nearly a stereotypical example of a player who would fall off the cliff sooner.

Physicality is only intimidating if you can skate well enough to make contact with someone.

  • Austin

Im right there with you. You can just expect to get everything you want right away, and D is a huge problem. when you look at the caps forwards, Ovie, Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Laich ( when hes healthy which i do see being iffy) Brouwer can produce, plus our 3rd line of chimera fehr and ward thats not too bad on offense I would say its solid. A solid Offense that could be improved but when you look at our D if we could land Nistkanen too, that is f%$king awesome. Again just my opinion. Oh and I have high hopes in Burakovsky.

  • PWong

Or MacLellan will take a dump in a sweater, slap an 84 on it, give it 6Mill/yr and tell Grabo not to let the door hit him on the way out…I really do love the Caps but today has sucked

  • Connor

I really hope GMBM is brewing a trade of some sort, i like to think he’s got an ace in the hole but he’s deff just winging it

  • guest

If Orpik got $5.5m HOW MUCH IS HE GOING TO GET?!

  • Ryan

Made my day sir, thank you

  • Connor

probably something along the lines of 20 years 7 million per

  • Austin

I say trade erskine to free up some cap space even if its not much hes not needed

  • djlotus

But we have young defense-men (and forwards) who will most likely have to sign elsewhere when they are due new contracts because the Cap will plateau, we will have no buyout options, and we will still be paying Orpik $5.5 million.

  • Austin

LOL thumbs up for the good joke

  • PWong

    True comedy comes from pain

  • Bonzaichkin

Would’ve liked to have Havlat for 1.5

  • JH

I would be shocked if Niskanen doesn’t come here.

  • yv

Central div. a big winner today, Iginla to Avs. Hawks pressed hard to do something.

  • HunterVT

Can we petition the league to extend the compliance buy out window by another day? We now have the perfect candidate.

  • JH

Of course we overpaid, but there aren’t a lot of options if you want an Orpik-type of D-man. Simple supply/demand.

  • Owen Johnson

I like the signing of Orpik. But not for that much.

  • yv

Stralman to TBL 5y for 20$. So Niskanen to Caps?

  • kyle boyd

i had suspended by disapointment with the idea of letting grabo walk, the vrana pick and the draft in general. was really, really trying to give bmac the benefit of the doubt. But i just can’t. bring back mcphee.

  • Cole-rod

Stralman to TB – 5 yrs 4 million per.

Think we may have overpaid for Orpik.

  • djlotus

I hope not. I’d rather have Del Zotto.

  • Connor

    Del ZOTTO?!?!

  • Connor

Welp now we are front runners for Niskanen. Here we go folks, hold onto your butts.

  • yv

    Nick Cotsonika@cotsonika
Lightning got Stralman for $7.5 million less than Capitals got Orpik over the same five-year term.

  • Connor

Reported that risky turned down 7 year 49 mill from TBL…..why are we still in the running for this shitshow

  • djlotus

Why not? If he stays healthy he is a young steady defense-men. I would take Del Zotto over Orpik or Niskanen 8 days a week. Maybe I just really hate the Orpik signing and its clouding my judgement.

  • H70
  • Connor

hockey insider on twitter “source in dc told me we thought we had niskanen signed and now we learn SJ is in the dance. bidding war I’m told”

  • Taylor Kelley

So… when did the Caps become the American Maple Leafs?

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

    Is this hockeyinsiderr? That’s garbage.

  • Kait

I am not entirely sure why Niskanen would be a bad thing? (Save for the fact that we will probably overpay him by disgusting amounts too…)

  • http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/ Peter Hassett

He’s a decent player. The overpayment is the problem, though the Capitals already have that problem…

  • Jimmie

That would be a dead-on estimation except for a couple or three things.

    1) The Caps didn’t actually make the playoffs last year. Forget “deep run”. Just getting there is the first goal.
    2) That money, which we’ll “have back in a few years” won’t go to pay for a reliable D man or a 2C *today*.
    3) You can get a lot of half-mobile veteran players for $5.5 million a years. Heck, Tampa Bay just got a *much* better defenseman for much less.

  • Ben

This is very true, but it shows that the teams management still believes we are a cup contender.. And this is a first year group; they had to make a splash somehow.. As a Caps fan this definitely not what I had in mind, but I’m not going criticize every move they make like all you dc fans.. Just have a lil faith in your damn team for once..

  • Eric Jones

I agree. My only guess would be that it’s a short term deal. maybe 1-2 years.

  • Kait

That’s rather what I suspected the issue was – which was why I cringed at it as well. I really don’t care to spend all of our cap space on overpaying just a few players.

  • yv

    Nick Kypreos@RealKyper
The delay with Niskanen is his steep asking price . Pales in comparison to #lightning deal for Stralman. Some #NHL teams priced out.

  • yv

    Craig Custance@CraigCustance
Red Wings being told that Niskanen heading elsewhere.

  • Searle

    Here we go agaaiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • djlotus

  • Brenna

Hope we were one of those teams that priced out….

  • djlotus

That sounds like he will be a Cap

  • yv

If it is Caps it means definitely Caps will trade someone. Erskine?

  • djlotus

I fail to see the market for Erskine. Unless he is packaged with two other players who will take him?

  • Connor

erskine, brouwer, mojo could be attractive to buffalo, not sure who are what in return

  • Connor

    or

  • djlotus

what on earth to they have that we want? Except Erhoff?

  • Connor

chris stewart to play opposite ovechkin on first line. not going to find a 2c there.

  • Ben

You have a point but why play what if’s? It certainly doesn’t seem like the right move or the best move, but they are the ones being paid to make those decisions, not us. Hopefully there’s a reason for that.

  • yv

Considering that Schultz got 2 yr from Kings than no reasons that Ersk would not takers several teams, like Oilers, Jets, etc.

  • djlotus

Niskanen asking 7 years/$6+ million per? Where do we sign?

  • JenCo

Listening to Ted on 980 right now, and he said something eluding to the fact that there is another big defensive signing to come before the day is done. Sooooo….

  • djlotus

We can salvage a small part of the day by re-signing Grabbo.

  • PWong

    on Grabo’s back

  • mspeer

Well, I really don’t get the money spent on Orpik but still hoping for a silver lining. In the meantime babies and bullies to take the mind off of it.

    http://media.giphy.com/media/9EfxElTn4asKs/giphy.gif

  • John Fitzmaurice

Better words could not be said.

  • John Fitzmaurice

    I’ll take the gun…

  • Jimmie

Sometimes sports executives make really, really bad decisions. I suspect our new assistant said a lot of words like “tough” and “intangibles” and hid the stat sheets.

  • Jimmie

I have to think now if Niskanen wants $7 mill a year, you have to walk away and take a look at maybe DelZotto for perhaps half that. We *might* have room for him and Grabo but not him, Grabo, and (say) Legwand.

But I’d be okay with DelZotto and Grabo with the remaining cap money. Keep Fehr at the pivot and pray for another season of lightning in a bottle on that 3rd line.

Or (gulp) start shopping Laich aggressively.

  • Kait

I’m hearing rumors that Niskanen is close to signing with the Caps. No. Nyet. Nein. Non… I need more ways to say no.

  • Chris
  • Kait

    I’m going to hurl.

  • themav80

    Everything is terrible.

  • 70Caps

    niskanen!!!!!

  • Peter

Honestly can’t be mad with this one! There were multiple reports that he was offered $7m/7 years by at least one team (Detroit). This gives us a great 2-way player on a long-term deal. He’s not old. He’s not good in one zone but a liability in another.

I also think this definitely means Green is gone. Clearly Niskanen and Orpik were both signed to be on a top-2 pair. So which one of Carlson-Alzner-Green do you push down to third pair? Pay Green $6m to play on the third pair? Nah, trade him for a decent 2c.

  • Rhino40

Did this come from Chipotle or Qdoba?

  • Rhino40

    We’re in trouble.
