Saturday night, Washington Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov drove up to Atlantic City to watch the WBO light heavyweight champion of the world, Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev, box Blake Caparello. Kovalev hails from Chelyabinsk, Russia, Kuznetsov’s hometown, and won via a vicious TKO in round two.

While there, Kuznetsov managed to snag a photo with Roy Jones Jr. who was doing (apparently terrible) commentary for the match.

These are pretty good seats.

Meanwhile, please listen to this video of Kuznetsov cheering and laugh. It’s amazing.

Here’s Kuznetsov with the champ after the match.

Kovalev, Kuzya, Gonchar, Nichuskin, Slava Voynov, Oleg Znarok (if you count the region), and many others… what the heck is in the water in Chelyabinsk? I realize it’s a decent sized city, but the list just goes on and on.

    Nuclear waste

    And wheaties for breakfast

    I miss Varly 🙁

  • Sarah

I thought that happened in New Jersey?

The Kyshtym disaster is actually ranked the 3rd worst of all time behind Chernobyl and Fukashima. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyshtym_disaster

  • OvechkinFiresAndScores08

Hopefully he wasn’t there to get tips…

  • Sarah

Dear God. I’m embarrassed to say I was unaware of the disaster, or if I read about it long ago, it had totally slipped my mind. As you can see from my response, I thought Steve was referencing New Jersey’s own Toxic Avenger, or the Incredible Hulk or some such. Maybe he was.
Thanks for the information, although these days it seems Chelyabinsk is becoming known for the legions of champion athletes it produces, rather than a disaster that happened in the 1950s. And I hope that continues to be the case. Being from Dallas, aka “Where They Shot Kennedy,” I sympathize with cities that get a bad name for disasters that aren’t even the citizens’ fault.
And no, even though I’ve lived in Dallas, I don’t know JR. 😉

its the same with St. Paul, Minnesota

  • Sarah

And Warroad really punches above its weight.

  • Vicki Albarano Blucher

i see what you did there

also just because their training camp starts tomorrow (not caps, but a certain college team) i just wanna say:

  • Sarah

Er, what did I do there? Sorry to be so clueless today, but I just thought we were talking about towns that massively overproduce NHLers and Olympians. Warroad is arguably number one on the planet on a per capita basis. I’m from Texas, so college hockey isn’t too much of a thing here, only get interested in prospects for teams I follow and that sort of thing.
    I’m gonna shut up now…

  • Vicki Albarano Blucher

you said “really punches” on a thread about a Kuzya attenting a boxing match, idk lol im very bored and tired today, and this is football Im talking about

  • Myan

Whoa that’s a lot of denim! And does Kuzy look bigger to me or is that just wishful thinking?

  • Graham Dumas

Isn’t that a young Christopher Walken?
