Caps hockey is back. The boys started the back end of the regular season off in Detroit for the last Capitals-Wings match up in Joe Louis Arena. The bye week rust was on display and I’m pretty sure the entire team was playing sunburned. The first was not a great period for the team in white. No real sustained offensive zone pressure and a misfire on the man advantage. Danish forward Frans Nielsen put the Red Wings up 1-0 on Detroit’s lone power play of the period. McGriddles fans everywhere wept. Tomas Tatar capitalized on a John Carlson turnover to put Detroit up 2-0, but the red hot, potentially pierced Zach Sanford brought the Caps within one before the end of forty minutes. Petr Mrazek then tried to steal the show, making numerous ten-bellers before Daniel Winnik batted home a rebound to tie the game at 2 and send it to overtime. Henrik Zetterberg with the shootout winner. Red Wings beat Caps 3-2.
