Kuzya skates with the national team. (Photo credit: Champtionat.com)

Evgeny Kuznetsov has been engulfed in rumors of trades to the KHL’s Dynamo Moscow and getting lured out of his current deal by Capitals officials. But speaking with Mikhail Zislis of Sport-Express, Kuznetsov cleared the air on both sides of the Atlantic. Kuznetsov squashed the rumors and restated that he’ll make the jump to the NHL next year.

From Sport-Express:

Is there anything behind the information that Washington has a representative flying over to Helsinki looking to get you over there sooner?

No, it’s a conspiracy. Don’t believe it [smiles]. I keep up with the people from the Capitals, talk to them friendly over the phone. Nothing new has happened in regards to that. They invited me to visit and talk. They know my plans well. I have decided for myself to spend the next year in Russia and then go to the NHL. Why should I rush?

Are the talks about getting traded to Dynamo worrying you?

Not at all. I’m planning to spend the next 365 days with Traktor. Don’t belive anything else. There are people who like to talk about everything, but they can write whatever.

You’re so confident as if there were no Nichushkin trade to Dynamo.

That was a whole different story.

Kuznetsov’s re-commitment to Washington is noteworthy, but his ability to speak authoritatively about his team’s asset-management decisions is a bit less certain.

In the middle of the season, Anderson lost his starting job to Dylan Tait. Anderson got a few spot starts as a back-up, and after Tait could not take advantage of his new role, Anderson regained his starting job. Lately, Brandon has shown some improvement, including being named the game’s number one star January 12th against Calgary.

At the WJC, Grubauer didn’t justify the hopes of coaches and fans, and played below average. He was the starting goalie in only 4 of Germany’s 6 games, and was yanked twice as the starter. Since returning to the OHL, he’s won four of his past five games and has been named the game’s second star twice.

Kuznetsov was named the best RW of the WJC and would have been named the best forward if not for Canada’s Brayden Schenn. Overall, Kuz showed his magic against the mega-talented defensemen of Sweden, Finland, and Canada. Kuznetsov scored some crucial goals in the tournament and was surely Russia’s best player. Before the Gold Medal Game I read one fan’s comment: “Only a miracle can help Russia win this one. The miracle’s name is Evgeny Kuznetsov.” Kuz did just what was needed, helping the Russians complete their third straight comeback in the WJC by recording three points in the third period of the Gold Medal Game against Canada. Evgeny was named Traktor’s best player in December and was also rumored to get traded to the KHL’s powerhouse, SKA St. Petersbourg. However, Traktor’s coach Belousov said that they’re not going to trade him even if they are almost out of the playoffs race.

It’s a tough life for the Pats as they lose almost all of their games and their rare wins usually come via the shootout. Over Regina’s last eleven games, Mitchell picked up two goals and five assists.

Orlov was named to the WJC all-star team over many first-round defensemen, such as Calvin de Haan and Erik Gudbranson. Being the Russians’ best D, Orlov showed great attacking skills and defensive responsibility. Even though his positional play had some blunders (such as Brayden Schenn’s goal in the gold-medal game) he really looked like he cared and worked hard at both ends of the rink. Despite new management at Metallurg, the team is going to get good money to acquire good players for the next season, and Orlov will likely cross the pond this summer. Metallurg might trade him before the KHL playoffs start, as their GM Leonid Weissfeld said: “A lot of teams were interested in Orlov. Almost the whole League”.

There was a little progress in Anderson’s stats compared to the previous report. Though his stats are still not great (0.872 Sv%, 4.41 GAA, and no wins), he played some good games. He had a terrible outing against the Raiders, where he allowed three goals on nine shots and was substituted in the first.

The Huskies won only one of their last nine outings.

Cody shined in the last week. Right before Canadian WJC Team Selection Camp got started, he posted his best performance of the season with 6 goals and 3 assists, twice was first star of the game and named star of the week in both the WHL and the whole CHL. This news reached Cody in the WJC camp, where he played in a couple of scrimmages between Red and White teams and recorded two points in one of them. Eakin survived after cuts made by Canada WJC team and made the final roster.

Flemming continues to produce a lot of assists; he’s the best D-man on his team in assists and third among all skaters. But his plus-minus didn’t improve much, and he lost the OHL lead in this stat.

Galiev is still not a leader for the Sea Dogs in scoring, and it looks like he’s saving his passion and goals for the WJC. He did shine in the game against the Olimpiques, where he recorded three points and was second star of the game. Anyway, we can say that Stan picked up his goal scoring: in the first half of 10-11 season he scored one goal fewer than in the whole 09-10 season.

He started December with an amazing game against the Generals, saving on 44 of 47 Oshawa’s shots and being named the first star of the game despite an OT loss. But in the next game, he spoiled his stats a bit. He faced Red Wings prospect Petr Mrazek in a game against the 67′s. Both Grubi and Mrazek are known for their amazing shootout saves, and when it came to the shootout Grubi was better– saving on both Ottawa’s shots. Overall, his two weeks were pretty bad, as he seems to have lost the scoring touch he had early in the season. Metallurg is now 19 points out of the playoffs. They’ve also lost their best goalie, Alexander Vyuhin. Their top forward, Kings prospect Maxim Kitsyn is ready to head to OHL’s Mississauga, and violations in the club’s financial policy have been revealed. It won’t be a big surprise for me if Metallurg leaves the KHL next summer.

Before we begin, we first must congratulate a handful of prospects on our list. Brett Flemming, a defenseman for the OHL’s Mississauga Majors, signed a three year entry level deal with the Washington Capitals last Thursday. Also, with the 2011 World Junior Championships set to begin a day after Christmas in Buffalo, countries have named their rosters for their respective WJC camps. Six Capitals Prospects were invited including Patrick Wey to Team USA, Philipp Gubauer to Team Germany, Cody Eakin to Team Canada, and Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitri Orlov, and Stanislav Galiev to Team Russia. Good luck, guys!

Larson is a solid third/fourth line forward who logs a lot of ice time on the penalty kill.
Anderson was on top of his game over the last two weeks. He had more than 30 saves in each of first three games, and was able to get a shootout victory for his team October 20th against Regina and October 23rd against Prince Albert. If he had trouble in earlier shootouts, he’s much improved– saving 8 of 10 shots. Thanks to these tremendous games, Brandon was twice named first star and second star once. He has since caught a cold and missed the last two Hurricanes’ games.

DeSimone is in a totally different situation than fellow Caps Prospect and Wildcats Teammate Greg Burke: he’s an important player, a #1 centerman, and a great passer.
The Broncos’ schedule didn’t have a lot of games: only four in two weeks. Captain Cody Eakin played in only three of those games because of a knee injury sustained October 23rd against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious, and after missing the game against the Pats- Cody returned to play against the Raiders and did very well, tallying his 9th goal of the season in an OT win October 23rd.

While the Majors have built a solid lead in their division, Brett Flemming continues to play well despite being quiet statistically. He was terrible in his first game of this reporting period, as he was on ice for all three goals Saginaw scored. In the most recent game against the Sudbury Wolves, he broke a five-game pointless streak with a shorthanded assist.

He’s now averaging just below one point-per-game (14 in 15), and has restored his plus-minus to even.

Like usual, Grubauer had a couple of great games– winning 2nd star and 1st star titles on October 24th and October 30th respectively. His most recent win was the hardest. He faced Owen Sound Attack, one of the best offensive teams in the OHL. During the game, Attack players put 57 shots on net, with Grubauer saving 53. Regulation ended in a 4-4 tie and neither team was able to get a goal in Overtime. In the shootout, Grubauer was the difference-maker, making saves on all three opponents’ attempts. Alan Quine scored and won it all for the Frontenacs.

After having to sit through a month of KHL regular season games, RMNB finally got the matchup they’ve been waiting for Tuesday, as two of their favorite Russian Caps Prospects faced off against one another. 2009 Second Round Draft Pick Dmitri Orlov and Metallurg Novokuznetsk played 2010 First Round Draft Pick Evgeny Kuznetsov and Traktor in Chelyabinsk.

Both prospects faired well early in the game. Kuznetsov had a beautiful, primary assist (his first of the year) on the game’s opening goal scored by Alexei Tertyshny. If you take a look at the game highlights above and fast forward to the 16 second mark, you’ll see Kuz, #92, take a pass behind the net, curl multiple times (a la Michael Nylander) before handing the puck off to a charging Tertyshny. Tertyshny then skated hard towards the slot, unleashed a wrist shot that was blocked, found his own rebound in his legs and then fired a backhander past a sprawled Alexander Vyukhin. 1-0 Traktor.

However, five and a half minutes later Metallurg responded on the powerplay. Again if you refer to the above highlights around the 53 second mark, you’ll see Dmitri Orlov, #9, help bring the puck into the offensive zone. After some dump and chase, Metallurg regained possession of the puck in the corners and set up their powerplay. After multiple passes around the perimeter, Orlov found Ruslan Khasanshin down low. Khasanshin, with no other play available, passed back to Dima who decided to wind up and fire a shot from the point. Orlov’s wicked, Gonchar-esque slapshot found its way past former NHL goaltender Sebastien Caron short-side. Orlov’s first goal of the season tied the game up 1-1 and also brought some momentum back for Metallurg, who was badly outplayed in the first period.

After the second period passed without a marker, Metallurg scored back-to-back goals in the third. 17 year old defenseman Zakhar Arzamastsev notched a nifty, unassisted goal while Vaclav Nedorost scored on the powerplay. Metallurg led 3-1. With 6 minutes left in the game, Gennady Razin brought Traktor back to within one goal with a slapshot from the point after a brilliant end-to-end rush by Yegor Dugin.

With 56 seconds left and Metallurg serving a penalty, Traktor was in prime position to tie it up. Head Coach Andrey Sidorenko pulled Caron and Traktor enjoyed a 6 on 4 advantage. Evgeny Kuznetsov wound up having the two best scoring chances, but could not find the back of the net. First, he missed on a shot from the slot, and then with 4 seconds left, he missed on a wraparound. Metallurg Novokuznetsk wins 3-2.

Head-to-Head stats:

Goals/Shots: Orlov – 1/2 – 50%, Kuznetsov – 0/5 – 0%;
Assists: Orlov – 0, Kuznetsov – 1;
TOI: Orlov – 18:29, Kuznetsov – 10:41;

Special Notes: Metallurg, considered one of the worst teams in the league, won despite the fact that they had only 14 shots on goal… Three of Metallurg’s best players weren’t able to be with the team Tuesday. The players had visa issues that prevented them from getting back home from Astana where they had just played Barys.

Included were NY Yankees, Arizona Cardinals & Spider-Man logos and his number at development camp, 92.

If one player could be said to have stolen the limelight during Caps development camp, it must be Evgeny Kuznetsov. The first-round draft pick scored a flurry of goals in scrimmages; invoked the ire of that other RMNB crush object, Braden Holtby; met with some Russian-language students from UMD, and even gorged on some cupcakes. We wanted to pick Evgeny’s brain, but we were stifled by the language barrier.

Luckily, friend-of-the-blog and sage of all things Caps, Oksana Zolotar, helped us out. In addition to having a truly awesome name, Oksana speaks fluent Russian. We put the two kids together for a chat following Wednesday’s scrimmage (in which Evgeny went 2G-1A-3P). Follow us past the jump to hear Evgeny discuss English, his ambitions, and his always cheerful attitude.

Oksana Zolotar: What are your impressions of Washington? America in general?
Evgeny Kuznetsov: Well, this isn’t my first time in America. I’ve been to America about ten times now, but it’s my first time in Washington. I haven’t been downtown yet, but other than that, I like everything, especially the atmosphere of the team.

[General Manager George McPhee says something congratulatory, but inaudible, to Evgeny. Evgeny nods politely.]

OZ: Are you having trouble with communication? The English language? How are you handling it?
EK: Yeah, I’m definitely having a lot of trouble. I don’t know the language. I know a little, so I can interact a little bit, translate, so it’s okay for now. I’m just going to study English a bit more before I make the final decision to come here, but that’s not totally up to me.

OZ: When the season’s over, do you relax a little bit in terms of training? Or keep at the same rate?
EK: This year I didn’t even have a chance to go anywhere on vacation because at the end of the season was the World Championship. I rested a little bit, a week, then I had to start training for tests before the draft. After that, I came here and trained in New York, then the draft, and then came here.

Evgeny dominated Wednesday's scrimmage. He had two goals and a primary assist. (Photo by Neil Greenberg)

OZ: What do you think you have to work on to reach the next level? What weaknesses do you have?
EK: I have to work on everything. Mostly I have to gain weight so I can be bigger, to play in the NHL you have to be big. But other than that, I need to work on skating and shooting, and I think it will be okay.

OZ: What about next year? What goals do you have? What plans?
EK: I would be more than happy to come here if they called, of course. But I do have a contract, and I would have to buy it out then, and I don’t have the type of money to buy it out.

OZ: If you were to compare yourself to a famous player, who would it be? Why?
EK: I can’t compare myself to any famous player because he’s already been playing, already accomplished something. I can only say who I admire, who I watch. I watch Malkin, Datsyuk, how they play, and try to do the same.

OZ: What about the Russian guys that are training with you? Did you already know them? Or just meet them here?
EK: [Laughs] Yeah, of course! I’ve known them for a long time! We played together, and always talked when our teams played against each other. But yeah, we’re friends, always keep in touch.

OZ: What about the Russians here? Do you know Ovechkin?
EK: No, I haven’t met anyone. Semin played in Chelyabinsk I remember. He played when I was little.

We'd be terrible journal-- er... bloggers if we didn't ask Evgeny what was up with this photo.

OZ: Alright Evgeny, we all saw your wonderful photo [shows photo from draft night], tell me …are you always this happy?
EK: [Laughs] Yeah I’m always happy, I think you can even ask the guys on the team, and they’ll tell you that I’m always smiling.
OZ: Oh, I’ve seen it. Everyone’s seen it.

OZ: Alright, last question. But honestly, are you disappointed that you didn’t go to the Rangers? [Kuznetsov had said before that he'd prefer to be drafted by NYR.]
EK: Well, I just didn’t think that Washington would choose me because… I mean I’m not going to lie, of course before I wanted to. But when Washington chose me, I realized that it was even better for me because here there are Russians, fantastic coaching. I don’t want to say anything about the Rangers, I don’t have anything against them, but I like it here better, I interact with people, it’s somewhat more pleasant here.

* * *

Extra: Bruce Boudreau’s thoughts on Kuznetsov

“Fantastic” coach Bruce Boudreau sang Kuznetsov’s praises after the scrimmage on Wednesday. In a chat with WP’s Tarik El-Bashir, Bruce also mentioned the pizazz Evgeny brings to his performance.

Finally, we’d like to thank Oksana Zolotar for her invaluable contribution. She was a total pro in these interviews, and –oh yeah– Monday is her birthday! Congratulations, Oksana! We’ll have her interviews with Dmitri Orlov and Stanislav Galiev later this week.
