In the Hershey Bears 4-3 win over the Albany Devils on Saturday night, teenage Caps prospect Dmitri Orlov impressed during his first game in North America. Not only did he register a point in his AHL debut, his first period of play was so solid that he even inspired the normally reserved Tim Leone to exclaim,”that’s the best first 20 minutes from a 19-year-old D I’ve ever seen in this league.”

For Caps fans who are frustrated with Washington’s once potent but now sputtering power play, Orlov’s accelerated development is nothing short of fantastic news. Hershey’s bench boss Mark French, encouraged by how much Dima seamlessly blended into Hershey’s lineup in the opening minutes, rode his hot hand using the Novokuznetsk, Russia native on the second power play unit later in the game. Orlov responded by unleashing several booming slap shots at Albany netminder Mike McKenna and eventually collected an assist on Steve Pinizzotto’s second period power play goal.

Speaking to the media after Monday’s trades, Capitals General Manager George McPhee had nothing but praise for Orlov: “We’re pretty high on this player. He’s a mobile puck moving defenseman,” McPhee said. “Really good on the power play… he’s got an edge to him. He can hit and play tough. And he really wants to be here.”

RMNB’s own Igor Kleyner caught up with Orlov after his first pro game Saturday to discuss the Bears, the AHL and yes, even Evgeny Kuznetsov’s wedding. Below the jump, we offer the translation of his conversation.

A. – Of course I am very glad our team won the game, and I even managed to get an assist, my first point here in the very first game. Everything went quite well for me. I am very glad I came here, absolutely no regrets. I also had a chance to spend three days in Washington, practiced with the team there. I have seen more than enough to motivate me to do my best to grow as a hockey player in order to eventually make it there. I think the next three months here will really help me to accomplish that, I will get a chance to improve my language skills, and to learn the system the team plays here, which is very similar to the one in Washington.

A. – Well, basically, I cannot say anything myself, but I understand some — not always, but sometimes I do. I get a lot of help from Dima Kugryshev. While I was in Washington, I met Sasha Semin, Ovechkin, Varlamov, they were helping me out while I was there.

A. – Well, not really, there is not that much talking going on the ice. If I misunderstand something — the coaches explain it later, they show it by drawing on the board, and if necessary, Dima helps out with translation.

A. – Yes, and I am very thankful to him for letting me stay with him. It’s not that important — my game is what matters the most.

A. – Well I know there is not much here except for the chocolate factory, and the amusement park — but I came here with one objective in mind — to play hockey. I have a dream — to play for the team in Washington.

A. – It was normal, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised, it was even better than normal. Everybody was smiling, helping me, even making fun of me a bit — but it was all perfectly normal. I really like it here, both in Washington and Hershey as well.

Q. – At the press conference after the game, the coach was asked about your performance today [Ed. note: at the 1:05 mark]. He gave you a very positive assessment, especially complimenting your good hockey sense.

A. – Well, I’ll say thank you to the coach, and I will try my best to make sure that he would always think so. [Ed. note: You can tell that Dima was caught off guard by French's compliment and was really honored by what he said.]

A. – Yes, that’s true…

Q. – And in the past you also mentioned that you try to model your game after Kirill Koltsov. Are there any current NHL players you like and look up to?

A. – There are lots of good players, and everybody has different strengths. I never really had one favorite player, but I try to watch what other players do, and maybe sometimes try to replicate if I see something I really like.

A. – Yes. My brother is a rugby player, and my father was one as well. I played rugby in summertime in parallel with hockey for a while. It really helped me to develop physically when I was going to rugby camps and played in tournaments. I think it was very helpful. Rugby is a very physical sport, just like hockey, so it really helped me develop useful skills.

A. – Well, I know he is getting married, but he has not invited me yet! [laughing]

Q. – But if the wedding is in early summer — you may not be able to make it if you are still in playoffs…

A. – I need to give him a call…

A. – Yes, I would love for that to happen. And I am hoping to make it to Sochi [Ed. note: The 2014 Winter Olympic Games]… there are dreams and goals, and I will be doing my best trying to achieve them.

A. – Thank you.

Since being drafted in the second round of the 2009 draft by the Capitals Dmitri Orlov has emerged as one of the top defensive prospects in Washington’s system, spurred by his solid play across the pond. Last year after Kontinental Hockey League’s Metallurg Novokuznetsk failed to qualify for the playoffs, the club decided to send him down to the Novokuznetsk Bears of the MHL, the KHL’s developmental league. After totaling only four goals and three assists in 43 KHL games, Orlov quickly found his game in the junior circuit, leading the Bears to the MHL Finals.

Orlov’s nine goals and 10 assists in the playoffs ranked him third among all skaters. He was awarded several top honors including the Davydov trophy as the MHL Playoff MVP and was also named the best defenseman of the MHL Finals and Semifinals.

Dima — as some fans know him — followed up his successful 2009-10 with two goals and 10 assists for Metallurg in 2010-11. Orlov also won a gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships with the U20 Russian National Team, playing on the top defensive pairing. He was named first-team all WJC along with fellow Caps prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Since Metallurg once again failed to make the playoffs this year and finished with the KHL’s worst record, Orlov and the club reached an agreement allowing him to start his professional career in the Capitals organization earlier than expected. On Saturday, he flew to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania before taking in Sunday’s Hershey Bears game against the Charlotte Checkers at Giant Center. Orlov is expected to officially sign with the Bears of the American Hockey League on Monday.

This is not Orlov’s first stint in America. He attended the Capitals 2009 and 2010 Development Camps, winning over Caps fans with his love of cupcakes in the process.

Dmitri Orlov, Metallurg’s defenseman and a winner of 2011 World Junior Championship, is departing for the farm team of the Washington Capitals on Saturday. That’s where he will spend the rest of the season.

According to Metallurg’s sporting director Leonid Veisfeld, the interests of the young players must always be considered. If Dmitri Orlov wants to play overseas, he should be given a chance and the team’s management will not stand in his way of achieving his dream. The team and the player are parting ways amicably: Dmitri knows that if things do not work out for him on the other side of the ocean he is always welcome in his hometown. Especially since Metallurg will retain the rights for the player in Russia. Dmitri will attempt to make the Capitals’ roster for the next season but it is quite possible that it will take a few months and the road to the spot with the main team will go through the farm club. If he succeeds, everybody at Metallurg will be happy for him. If not, he can come back any time. Time will tell if Dmitri’s decision to attempt the move to the NHL, especially one of its stronger teams, was the right one.

Before his departure for the North America, Dmitri Orlov answered a few questions.

Question – Dmitri, Metallurg finished the last in the regular season, it is of course a disappointing result. But how do you see your season personally?

Dmitri Orlov – In principle, I am satisfied, especially since it’s not over for me yet. One of the main tasks was to play as well as possible at the World Junior Championship, try to win the gold — and it was accomplished. Yes, sometimes it was pretty difficult. We were losing a lot at Metallurg, it wasn’t easy psychologically. But I tried to come out for every game and play my game.

Now I am going to America, I’ll be playing for the Washington Capitals farm team — Hershey. I am going to spend three months there, then we can make conclusions about my season. Let’s see how I do there.

Question – Do you have any concerns before your departure for Hershey?

Dmitri Orlov – Of course, I am worried. I am sure it’s not going to be easy. I don’t even know where I am going to live. I have to make the line-up, prove everything all over again. Hershey is a leader in the AHL, with grownups playing. It won’t be easy.

Up until now I have played my whole life in Novokuznetsk. I was born and grew up here. It was good to join the first team at such early age, you can say I got lucky. I broke my collarbone during the season before joining the first team, didn’t play for a long time, really struggled to recover, gained some extra weight, and as a result, had a lot of problems in training. After a week of practicing with the second team, they said that Maxim Kitsin and I are being transferred to Metallurg; I was of course very happy, but at the same time worried a lot. I remember my first practice with the first team, it was a cross country 10 kilometers run, I finished last — I was always a bad runner — so I wasn’t particularly upset about it. Then, I show up for the second practice, and the doctor tells me: “Eagle, pack your bags, the coach is not happy with you, you are going back to the second team.” The second practice was a game, I think we were playing team handball… but in the end, they just let it go, I was always finishing the cross country runs the last. So they eventually kept me in the first team, thanks to [Metallurg head coach] Sergey Alekseevich Nikolaev at the time. You can say he opened the door into the big hockey for me.

Of course I am very thankful to my parents, brother, grandparents — they always have been and will be very supportive. They help me with advice in both hockey and life. When I was a little kid, my father recorded all my games on video, then we watched and analyzed together. Now we don’t have to record anything ourselves, but we still watch my games with my father, he always points out my mistakes. He never played the game himself, but he understands the game well and always gives me advice.

I am also grateful to my first coach — Vladimir Georgievich Efimov — he worked with me, of course not everything was always perfect between us — but that’s normal. And my next coach, Valery Nikolaevich Kalashnikov, he worked with me for a year. He always took good care of me, helped and supported me, saw my potential.

Question – What would you like to wish for Metallurg and its supporters?

Dmitri Orlov – For the team, to make playoffs, to keep the fans happy, to fill the arena. You must have proper finances for that. There always have been and should be hockey in Novokuznetsk. It’s a hockey town. I hope for the best.

As we already wrote, the Caps were well represented in 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, sporting five prospects in the tournament. Philipp Grubauer played on the weak German team and Patrick Wey had a situational role on the bronze-medal USA squad.  The other three Caps prospects played in the finals and each had great success in the tournament. So what did they do in the gold medal game? Here is our look at their best moments.

Cody Eakin

Yes, it wasn’t even recorded as an assist, but his hit on Urychev gave Marcus Foligno enough time to make a sweet pass to Brayden Schenn to set up Canada’s third and final goal. Throughout the game, Eakin looked like a guy who can do all the little things: he isn’t afraid to go hard to the net, and he is a tenacious forechecker. That’s why he was put on the first line and was named Canada’s player of the game over Schenn, who’s two-point performance tied a Canadian team record for most points in the tournament.

When will he be a Cap? Eakin was recently traded from the Swift Current Broncos to the Kootenay Ice. The Ice are now leading their division in the WHL and are set for a long run in the playoffs. The WHL playoffs will end in early May and, if they are successful, the Ice will proceed to the Memorial Cup later that month. If that scenario plays out, Eakin will not be able to join Bears unless they go deep in the Calder Cup Playoffs. This is Eakin’s last season of CHL eligibility so we’ll likely see him full-time in either Washington or Hershey next fall.

Kuznetsov’s assist on a game-tying… WHAT. A. PASS. That move was awesome!

When will he be a Cap? Kuznetsov would not play for the Bears even though Traktor is not close to making the KHL playoffs. He’ll likely be either playing with the White Bears, Traktor’s MHL affiliate or he may elect to undergo another shoulder surgery as soon as humanly possible. In regards to his first full season in the Capitals organization, Kuznetsov aims to play in the North America in the 2012-13 season.

Dmitri Orlov

Dima didn’t have any highlight reel material, but he played responsible and didn’t make any silly decisions. He always checked to see if there was somebody covering his zone when he went on attack. Unlike most of the Russian team, he kept things simple, and dumped the puck in when necessary.

When will he be a Cap? Orlov is still eligible to play in the MHL (the KHL’s development league), however, according to Dmitry Chesnokov, if Orlov is not traded before the end of the KHL season, he wants to play for Hershey during the AHL playoffs. Metallurg’s season is pretty much already over, as they are 20+ points away from the last playoff spot. Regardless, Orlov’s first full professional season with the Capitals organization will begin next season.

Carrier and his MAINEacs had a very productive stretch, winning eight out of eleven. Carrier not only racked up a bunch of points (9pts in 10 games), he also unleashed the fury on Carl-Antoine Delisle of Victoriaville.

DeSimone continues to lead New Hampshire to NCAA glory. Right now UNH is ranked 7th nationally in the USCHO poll. DeSimone’s third on the team in points with 5 goals and 18 assists (1.15 PPG).

Stats: DNP

All Huskies games including two to win the Florida College Classic, were won by Mike Lee. Dan Dunn was the backup and did not play.

Cody Eakin, C, Kootenay Ice, WHL

Stats: CHL: DNP.
WJC: 7 GP, 1 G, 2 A, +3, 2 PIM

Cody Eakin was very solid in the WJC (3pts in 7 games) and at one point was promoted to Canada’s first line alongside Marcus Foligno and Brayden Schenn. Upon his return to Swift Current, he was traded to the Cup-contending Kootenay Ice for eight assets, including five players and three draft picks. Eakin still hasn’t made his debut for the Ice because of a hand injury.

Brett Flemming, D, Mississauga Majors, OHL

Stats: 9 GP, 0 G, 4 A, +5, 8 PIM

The Majors have played well, as they’ve lost only two of their last nine games. Flemming has had 4 assists during that span, including one short-handed.

Stanislav Galiev, LW, St John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Stats: 10 GP, 6 G, 4 A, +8, 4 PIM

At the end of 2010, Galiev slumped, recording just one point in four games. He was obviously very disappointed that he was sent home from the WJC camp. But after the Russian team won the championship, Galiev’s scoring touch returned. He’s recorded 7 points in his last 5 outings.

Andrew Glass is the first player on Prospect Watch to have hockey literally taken away from him. The Terrier was permanently dismissed from his team for being late and missing meetings.

At the WJC, Grubauer didn’t justify the hopes of coaches and fans, and played below average. He was the starting goalie in only 4 of Germany’s 6 games, and was yanked twice as the starter. Since returning to the OHL, he’s won four of his past five games and has been named the game’s second star twice.

Baby Gus returns to Prospect Watch as he signed a deal in Switzerland with the SCL Tigers. The Tigers have a good chance to make the playoffs. Anton has tallied one point, an assist, in his last four games.

The Musketeers struggled while Herbert was shelved four games due to an injury. Herbert reclaimed the team lead in points though playing eight games less than Ryan Carpenter. He’s also second on the team in shots and shooting percentage.

Kuznetsov was named the best RW of the WJC and would have been named the best forward if not for Canada’s Brayden Schenn. Overall, Kuz showed his magic against the mega-talented defensemen of Sweden, Finland, and Canada. Kuznetsov scored some crucial goals in the tournament and was surely Russia’s best player. Before the Gold Medal Game I read one fan’s comment: “Only a miracle can help Russia win this one. The miracle’s name is Evgeny Kuznetsov.” Kuz did just what was needed, helping the Russians complete their third straight comeback in the WJC by recording three points in the third period of the Gold Medal Game against Canada. Evgeny was named Traktor’s best player in December and was also rumored to get traded to the KHL’s powerhouse, SKA St. Petersbourg. However, Traktor’s coach Belousov said that they’re not going to trade him even if they are almost out of the playoffs race.

It’s a tough life for the Pats as they lose almost all of their games and their rare wins usually come via the shootout. Captain Mitchell does everything he can, picking up a lot of PIM’s for fighting and instigating, and putting as many points as he can on the board. Over Regina’s last eleven games, Mitchell picked up two goals and five assists.

Orlov was named to the WJC all-star team over many first-round defensemen, such as Calvin de Haan and Erik Gudbranson. Being the Russians’ best D, Orlov showed great attacking skills and defensive responsibility. Even though his positional play had some blunders (such as Brayden Schenn’s goal in the gold-medal game) he really looked like he cared and worked hard at both ends of the rink. Despite new management at Metallurg, the team is going to get good money to acquire good players for the next season, and Orlov will likely cross the pond this summer. If you’ve been paying close attention to RMNB over the past few months, you were already well-aware of the gem that the Capitals have in Evgeny Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov, who has been tearing it up this season with the KHL’s Traktor Chelyabinsk, found his game when it mattered most in this year’s World Junior Championship. The Russian-born winger finished as the tournament’s second-leading scorer with four goals and eight assists, and led Russia to its first WJC gold medal since 2003.

In the quarterfinals against Finland, Kuznetsov single-handedly brought his team back from a 3-1 deficit registering a goal, an assist, and the overtime game-winner. The 18-year old then followed up that clutch performance with yet another one against the Canadians in the Gold Medal Game. In front of a boisterous pro-Canadian crowd at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena, Kuz assisted on three goals in the third period, including a no-look pass to Vladimir Tarasenko that yielded the game-tying goal.

Suffice to say, when Kuznetsov landed back home in Russia this past Saturday, he was met with a large media horde. RMNB’s Igor Kleyner has translated two Russian articles from this past weekend, which detail Evgeny’s feelings on his new gold medal, what it was like to play in front of such a hostile crowd, and that whole ‘underage-drinking/being-kicked-off-a-plane’ scandal.

The first article Igor translated is a story published in Sport-Express by Pyotr Tereshchenkov entitled, “Evgeny Kuznetsov: ‘And Then I Saw The Canadians Hiding Under Their Bench.’” Kuz was interviewed for this article by a group of Russian reporters upon landing in Moscow on Saturday, January 8th.

Question – Evgeny, do you wish you could have scored in the final?

Evgeny Kuznetsov – What’s it matter who scored? I was lucky to score twice in the quarterfinals. Someone else scored in the other games. It makes no difference to me. It’s the World Championship. Winning is the main objective, and it’s pointless to think about personal achievements. The goal is to bring home the gold. At this point, I don’t think anybody will remember who scored in which game.

Q – It appeared the team got fired up after the incident at the end of the second period, when a Canadian player kicked your captain, Vladimir Tarasenko, in the head while not trying particularly hard to avoid the collision. Is that true?

EK - More importantly, in spite of the injury, Volodya [Tarasenko] came out and played in the third period. When you’re in a situation where people do not surrender and keep fighting, then you begin to understand: “This guy came out to play injured, and I am healthy. Why can’t I play?!” Emotions overwhelm you. We scored right away, the crowd started making noise, but we scored the second goal, and the third. Everything settled down.

Q - Is it true that after the second goal the Canadians had fear in their eyes?

EK – I agree. Skating by their bench, I noticed they seemed to be hiding under the bench. All you could see was their coach’s head.

Q – How difficult was it to control yourself when the referees were not fair?

EK – Not at all. I have learned to control my emotions. As soon as you start arguing, talking – you can simply stop playing.

Q – Did you feel a lot of pressure from the twenty thousand strong crowd in the sold out arena in Buffalo?

EK – Of course. But it’s a pleasure to beat the Canadians.

Q – How did it feel to receive the award from the legendary Scotty Bowman?

EK – That was Scotty Bowman? ::laughing:: No, I did not receive my award from him.

Q – How does one avoid what happened to the Canadians, where you allow five goals in the third period and lose?

EK – First and foremost, you cannot stop concentrating. You cannot stop. You have to play your hockey through the end.

Q – It seems that you were picked on more than the others. Provocations?

EK – Not at all. In fact, I pick on everybody else. ::smiling::

Q – Did you follow the North American media during the tournament? Did you see all those “Kuznetsov’s Magic” headlines after your super goal against the Finns in the quarterfinal?

EK – No. I followed the Russian press on the internet, but did not pay attention to the American media.

Q – Do you have any desire to comment on the story about the team being taken off the flight home?

EK – It was absolute nonsense.

Q – Nevertheless, the American media paid a lot of attention to it…

EK – They should look at their medal. Then everything will be clear.

Q – Have your chances improved for making the Russian National Team now?

EK – Maybe, I can make the team for a round of EuroTour, but I don’t think I will get to go to the World Championships for the next two or three years. I don’t think anybody would be willing to take a very young player to such a tournament. You have to earn that. It will make me want to work even harder in order to make progress. And if they decide to give me a chance on the National Team, I will double my effort. I’ll try to play even better. Because to to be picked for the World Championship as an 18-year old, that’s a totally different story.

Q – When are you returning to Traktor?

EK – Tonight. I heard they are preparing something special at the airport.

Q – You think the whole city will be there?

EK – Maybe. ::smiling::

Q – Do you think you are going to get a couple of days off?

EK – I don’t know yet. Haven’t talked to anybody so far.

Q – And when do you feel you will be ready to go back on the ice?

EK – Any time. I am always ready to play.

Q – So, emotionally, do you have enough passion left for the rest of the season?

EK – Of course. It’s just a beginning of the most interesting part of the year. And now I have to go.

Question – You have won the World Championship. What are your goals now?

Evgeny Kuznetsov – Next, is to win the Stanley Cup. And as far as the national team, I don’t think I will make the team for the next two years.

Q – Why?

EK – I am too young, and I doubt anybody wants to risk of bringing an 18-year old kid to the National Team. But if I get the call, I will redouble my efforts.

Q – Talk about the incident at the airport in Buffalo, what actually happened there?

EK – Nothing at all happened. We calmly got on the plane, turned our headphones on, and went to sleep. And then, two men walked on board and said: “Get off the plane, or it won’t fly!” Just stupid… Yes, we did yell a bit at the airport: “Russia – Champion!” But it was just emotions. We had just won the World Championship. I think if it were Canadians or Americans, no one would have said anything. But what can you do? We picked up our stuff, went to the hotel, and went to sleep.

Q – Canadian journalists kept the story going for quite some time.

EK – Let them look at what color their medals are.

Q – What was the most memorable moment, aside from this fantastic victory?

EK – Probably, the eyes of the Canadian fans. When I looked into the stands after the final siren, I saw a real sorrow. People were crying. I was shocked. And one more thing: when we made it to the finals, I saw some guys that printed out my picture, and drew a beard and mustache on me, and added a few not so flattering words. After the game, I skated up to them and asked: “What’s the score?”

What can you say about this player’s season so far?

I think everybody was expecting a little bit more from Cody Eakin. At the start of the season, a lot of people said that he was one of the candiates for the WHL Player of the Year award. But unfortunately, he had to fight not only with his opponents, but with his own injuries as well. It has definitely affected his game and his statistics. He’s unlikely to score the 50 goals we all dreamt about earlier, but he still can reach 40 with a good second half of the WHL season. In his final three games before the selection camp Eakin had six goals and three assists, and we hope he can keep it up his torrid scoring during the WJC.

What role, in your opinion, will this player fill on his WJC team?

According to the camp exhibitions against Sweden and Switzerland, Eakin will play on the right wing on the third line with Ryan Johansen and Brett Connolly. Analysts have pointed out that the current Canadian roster is less talented than their predecessors, but the Canadians can still win the WJC with the hard work, good defensive play, and persistance. That’s why Cody Eakin is on this team. He surely can score some goals, too.

What is best-case scenario for this player in the NHL?

If everything goes perfectly, Eakin could become a hardworking top-6 player like Brooks Laich and score 20+ goals per season. He doesn’t have Laich’s size, so it’s difficult to say how will he perform against big NHL defensemen. But Eakin could get some value out of his speed and mobility. If his offensive skills don’t translate, he has the qualities to become a solid third-liner.

What can you say about this player’s season so far?

He has not been consistent this year, having both fantastic and terrible games. It is reflected in his stats. He is 15-8-2 with a 3.43 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Such inconcistency in some ways is characteristic for all young goalies. One notable statistic however is that Grubauer has been unbeatable in shootouts winning four of four.

What role, in your opinion, will this player fill on his WJC team?

Coaches of the German WJC Team consider Grubauer as their #1 goalie and team leader. He’s one of a few players who was drafted by a NHL team in the draft.

What is best-case scenario for this player in the NHL?

It’s hard to forecast goalies’ futures: sometimes undrafted players become starters (Bobrovsky) while first-rounders never play a game in the NHL. But since we are considering a best-case scenario, Grubi has a chance to become a starter in the NHL.

What can you say about this player’s season so far?

Kuznetsov is having a very good season in the KHL. He has already improved upon his statistics last year, and his role on the team is expanding. Also, this season Traktor hired Valery Belousov, who is considered a great mentor for younger players. This can only speed up his development for the NHL. He’s currently one of the best prospects in Russia and in Europe.

What role, in your opinion, will this player fill on his WJC team?

Kuznetsov is one of Russia’s first line players. He’ll be one of the team leaders, and there are high expectations of him. He showed some great chemistry with Sobchenko and Tarasenko, which means that their first line might be one of the best at the WJC. Next year he will still be eligible to return, which is great for team Russia.

What is best-case scenario for this player in the NHL?

Kuznetsov is a player with a high ceiling and he has what it takes to be a first line player in the NHL. If he develops, he could become a 100-point player. As he has said himself, he’s going to spend another year in Russia and this should be good for his development. He will only cross the pond when he feels he is ready.

Dmitri Orlov, D, Team Russia

What can you say about this player’s season so far?

Orlov had a very good start of the KHL season, as he was a regular on the scoresheet and was a part of Metallurg’s first defensive pairing. Then something happened and Orlov lost his touch. After a prolonged scoring slump, Dima was demoted down to the MHL. He now gets a lot of minutes and has since improved.

What role, in your opinion, will this player fill on his WJC team?

Most likely, Orlov will be the number one defenseman for Valery Bragin’s team. He’s going to log big minutes. Also, he was named an alternate captain.

What is best-case scenario for this player in the NHL?

Orlov has all the talent to become a solid NHL offensive defenseman, but he needs to continue to work. On the defensive side – he needs to play more physically, and on the offensive side – he needs to improve his shot’s accuracy. He can become a top four defenseman with Powerplay duties.

What can you say about this player’s season so far?

Pittsburgh-native Patrick Wey, who participated in the 2009 and 2010 USA Hockey National Junior Team Evaluation Camp, represents Boston College, who is considered one of the strongest hockey organizations in the NCAA. BC is loaning three players to the 2011 WJC USA roster, which is most among all NCAA teams. Wey performs well in his shutdown defenseman role, though his scoring stats are nothing to write home about: one goal and three assists in 16 games. Recently Patrick was apart of BC’s third defensive pairing, but – to be honest – all of the defenseman on the team there seem of equal talent and are interchangeable.

What role, in your opinion, will this player fill on his WJC team?

Wey is going to be the seventh defenseman, but in junior hockey, you can use seven blueliners in each game. I think he’s going to get big minutes on the PK, and the fact that he was chosen over Pens prospect and current BC teammate Philip Samuelsson (son of Ulf Samuelsson)  was a surprise for many. This is his last year of WJC eligibility.

What is best-case scenario for this player in the NHL?

Even though the Caps aren’t a defensive powerhouse, they have a lot of young, talented, stay-at-home defenseman who they control the rights of for a long time including Jeff Schultz, Karl Alzner, and John Carlson. Schultz, who I believe is a comaparable example, had a breakout season at the age of  25. Wey is currently 19. Therefore, he still has a lot of time to develop. Look for him to play with the AHL’s Hershey Bears in the next year or two, though keep in mind, he still has two years of college eligibility after this season has concluded.

DeSimone’s still hot though he didn’t score a goal in the last two weeks. He recorded at least a point in 7 of his last 9 games, as his ‘Cats won 7 of 11 conference games this year.

Stats: 2 GP, 17 Sv, 6 GA, 39:28 TOI

The Huskies’ first game against the Fighting Sioux was broadcast nationwide (USA) on the NHL Network. Dunn started twice and was pulled twice (though he returned to a game against Fighting Sioux late in the third). His weird performance in the last game was smoothed over a little bit by an assist. The Huskies won only one of their last nine outings.

Cody shined in the last week. Right before Canadian WJC Team Selection Camp got started, he posted his best performance of the season with 6 goals and 3 assists, twice was first star of the game and named star of the week in both the WHL and the whole CHL. This news reached Cody in the WJC camp, where he played in a couple of scrimmages between Red and White teams and recorded two points in one of them. Eakin survived after cuts made by Canada WJC team and made the final roster.

Brett Flemming, D, Mississauga Majors, OHL

Stats: 6 GP, 0 G, 5 A, +2, 4 PIM

Majors lost a couple of games in the first half of December. They have fallen to second place in the CHL rankings. Flemming continues to produce a lot of assists; he’s the best D-man on his team in assists and third among all skaters. But his plus-minus didn’t improve much, and he lost the OHL lead in this stat.

Stanislav Galiev, LW, St John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Stats:  7 GP, 2 G, 4 A, +4, 0 PIM

Galiev is still not a leader for the Sea Dogs in scoring, and it looks like he’s saving his passion and goals for the WJC. He did shine in the game against the Olimpiques, where he recorded three points and was second star of the game. Anyway, we can say that Stan picked up his goal scoring: in the first half of 10-11 season he scored one goal fewer than in the whole 09-10 season.

The Terriers’ LW found a spot on the third line, scoring his first goal in more than a month against their rivals from BC Eagles.

He started December with an amazing game against the Generals, saving on 44 of 47 Oshawa’s shots and being named the first star of the game despite an OT loss. But in the next game, he spoiled his stats a bit. He faced Red Wings prospect Petr Mrazek in a game against the 67′s. Both Grubi and Mrazek are known for their amazing shootout saves, and when it came to the shootout Grubi was better– saving on both Ottawa’s shots. He now has 4 SOWs (no SOLs), saving on 10 of 11 attempts.

Orlov recorded an impressive performance in the last game against Traktor, posting season-high 22:15 TOI. Overall, his two weeks were pretty bad, as he seems to have lost the scoring touch he had early in the season. Metallurg is now 19 points out of the playoffs. They’ve also lost their best goalie, Alexander Vyuhin. Their top forward, Kings prospect Maxim Kitsyn is ready to head to OHL’s Mississauga, and violations in the club’s financial policy have been revealed. It won’t be a big surprise for me if Metallurg leaves the KHL next summer.

Two more good wins for the Eagles. They defeated their rivals from BU twice but those games weren’t very good for the Eagles’ D. Even though they scored 14 goals, 7 allowed is way too much. The Eagles won 4 of the last five contests.

Before we begin, we first must congratulate a handful of prospects on our list. Brett Flemming, a defenseman for the OHL’s Mississauga Majors, signed a three year entry level deal with the Washington Capitals last Thursday. Also, with the 2011 World Junior Championships set to begin a day after Christmas in Buffalo, countries have named their rosters for their respective WJC camps. Six Capitals Prospects were invited including Patrick Wey to Team USA, Philipp Gubauer to Team Germany, Cody Eakin to Team Canada, and Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitri Orlov, and Stanislav Galiev to Team Russia. Brandon Anderson, G, Lethbridge Hurricanes, WHL

Stats: 4 GP, 124 Sv, 22 GA, 245:00 TOI

In the last two weeks he’s played in four games, and they’ve all been trouble  for him. He won only one game (it went to the shootout) and averaged 5,39 GAA with a terrible 85.5 Sv%. For the first time in a long while, he has not been a star in any of his games.

Stats: DNP

The Wildcat is still out of line-up with mononucleosis. Less indiscriminate smooching in Burke’s future maybe?

Samuel Carrier, Lewiston MAINEiacs, QMJHL

Stats: 5 GP, 2 G, 3 A, +6, 5 PIM

The MAINEiacs are on fire, winning 4 of the last 5 games and fighting for a lead in the regular season with the Quebec Remparts, St. John Sea Dogs, and Montreal Juniors. And Carrier’s hockey performance has been a bright spot. First of all, he picked up two goals and three assists. Also, he scored thewinning SO goal against the Wildcats and had a tremendous +4 (season best for him). And a fighting major.

Fight vs Chicoutimi Sagueneens:

Phil DeSimone, C, New Hampshire University Wildcats, NCAA

Stats: 4 GP, 1 G, 6 A, +5, 0 PIM

DeSimone continued his good performance and added six points to his tally. At this pace, he’s going for 53 points in 34 games – much more than David Steckel’s 30 in 41 during his fourth year with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Goal vs Boston University Terriers: (2:40)

Dan Dunn, G, St. Cloud State University Huskies, NCAA

Stats: 1 GP, 22 Sv, 3 GA, 60:00 TOI

The Huskies played just two games in the last two weeks. Dunn finally recorded a win – his second of the season. In 14 games the Huskies have only five wins.

Cody Eakin, C, Swift Current Broncos, WHL

Stats: 6 GP, 1 G, 6 A, -6, 14 PIM

* Named to Team Canada’s WJC Camp Roster

In a terrible game against the Blades, he ended his point streak at 9 games. But then he started a new one. Last weekend, he earned two points and both times was named a #1 star in each of two back-to-back games with the Hurricanes. Then he played in the last game of the Subway Super Series, earned an assist, but the WHL team lost.

Highlights vs Seattle Thunderbirds, Highlights vs Spokane Chiefs

Brett Flemming, D, Mississauga Majors, OHL

Stats: 5 GP, 0 G, 4 A, +5, 4 PIM

* Flemming signed to three year entry level deal by the Capitals

Flemming and the Majors are fine as earlier. They won in all five of their games and lead the OHL. Flemming was pretty valuable at the both ends of the rink, getting some points (four assists). His +25 after 25 games are the league’s best.

Stanislav Galiev, LW, St John Sea Dogs, QMJHL

Stats: 3 GP, 2 G, 2 A, +3, 6 PIM

The talented Sea Dogs continue to crash everybody they meet. In the last three games they scored 22 goals and allowed few against. Unfortunately, Stan Galiev didn’t score that much, but he still has had four solid points. These numbers look small next to the stats of Zach Phillips and Jonathan Huberdeau (both are 2011 draft eligible), who have had 9 and 8 points respectively.

Andrew Glass, LW, Boston University Terriers, NCAA
Stats: 1 GP, 0 G, 0 A, -1, 0 PIM

The Terriers winger is struggling and was sidelined for one game, but then he played one game on the third line.

Philipp Grubauer, G, Kingston Frontenacs, OHL

Stats: 4 GP, 121 Sv, 12 GA, 195:23 TOI

* Named to Team Germany’s WJC Camp Roster

He was not bad at the start of reporting period winning two of three games becoming a #2 star twice. But Sunday’s game against the Ottawa 67′s spoiled impressions. Phil allowed four goals in 16 minutes and was changed. But even with this, he has solid 91.0 Sv% and 3.69 GAA. It looks like he allowed a lot, but don’t forget he faces more than 40 shots on average.

Highlights vs Sarnia Sting:

Caleb Herbert, С, Sioux City Musketeers, USHL

Stats: 4 GP, 2 G, 2 A, N/A, 6 PIM

Herbert and his Musketeers have had hard times. The future Capital is still the number one scorer on his team, but his team scored only 5 goals in the last 4 games as Herbert has just one and -6. Looks like the last game against the Ice is a peak of the struggling period -3 and 4 PIM for Herbert.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, RW, Traktor Chelyabinsk, KHL

Stats: 5 GP, 4 G, 2 A, 4, 2 PIM

The only game Larson scored in was a non-conerence one against the Wolverines. Nick Larson’s status as a Caps prospect is questioned in the latest HFBoards’ Caps prospects list. We’ll keep you posted.

Garrett Mitchell, RW, Regina Pats, WHL

Stats: 6 GP, 0 G, 2 A, -6, 7 PIM

Pats had difficult two weeks. They won only one of six contests and that was a SO win. The captain of the team can’t be happy with his game either. In all but one game against the Cougars, Mitch had a negative rating earning only two points in two weeks. And yeah, as always, he fought.

After the break the only game Kuznya won was match against tough Western outsiders from Vityaz. Orlov’s TOI goes down from season-high 21:03 in the first game of the reporting period to 15:33 (third worst this season) in his last game where Orlov was punished by the Eastern offensive powerhouse, Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

The Eagles have had a tremendous performance in the last week: 3 wins in 3 games with goals total 17-6. Wey scored his second goal of this season making a final push to make the USA U-20 National Team preliminary roster, which will be announced in the early December.

Anderson’s play has fallen off since last month. He has been ill and missed two Canes games. Anderson played poorly in his first game back after allowing 4 goals after 40 minutes on only a few shots. Otherwise, he has delivered 30-save games in 12 of 16 games this season. After the loss to the Wheat Kings he was named 3rd star.

Greg Burke, LW, New Hampshire University Wildcats, NCAA

The Wildcats’ sophomore is off to a slow start due to a myriad of injuries. After coming back from a leg injury, he has been sidelined for 3-4 weeks with mononucleosis. “He played very well, and now he’s out,” Wildcats coach Duck Umile said. “We found out Monday afternoon. Someone else will have to step in. I haven’t made my decision on who that will be yet.”

Kirill Kabanov made his long anticpated debut in a MAINEacs jersey, however it didn’t help Carrier on the scoresheet. Sam had two assists including one while shorthanded. That’s his second PK point this year.

Stats: 4 GP, 1 G, 2 A, E, 0 PIM

DeSimone had 14 shots on goal over the last few weeks and two multipoint games. He is the #1 pivot for the ‘Cats, who are ranked 7th in the latest USCHO rankings. DeSimone is tied for the lead in the team’s scoring with 10 points in 9 games.

Highlights vs UMASS: (Goal @ 0:45, assist @ 0:15)

Dan Dunn, G, St. Cloud State University Huskies, NCAA
Stats: 1 GP, 18 Sv, 3 GA, 59:38 TOI

The Huskies’ goalie missed three straight games, and it looks like Mike Lee is now the #1 netminder for the Huskies after weeks of struggling with Dunn.

Cody Eakin, C, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
Stats: 5 GP, 2 G, 4 A, -2, 4 PIM

Cody did not play in every game this period. This time he had a rest during the game against the Winterhawks. Three days after he came back, he had an assist. Then he got the OTGWG on the Cody Eakin Bobblehead night to extend his 7-game point streak. He was named a captain of the WHL team set to play against Russia in the last game of the Superseries.

The Majors crashed their opponents, earning 13 points over their last seven games. Flemming had as many points in those 7 as in the previous 13. Brett and the Majors had a decent defense helping him get a plus-10 rating in the period and become #1 in the OHL in plus/minus.

Stanislav Galiev, LW, St John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Stats: Stats: 4 GP, 1 G, 3 A, +2, 0 PIM

We can say the same things about Stan as we said in the previous report. His Sea Dogs played well, winning 3 of 4 contests and even crashing the Remparts (one of the best teams in QMJHL). Now he has 18 points (10G, 8A) in 19 games and finally a positive rating (plus-2). Also Stan played one game for Team Russia in the Superseries, but had only one shot on goal.

Andrew Glass, LW, Boston University Terriers, NCAA
Stats: 1 GP, 0 G, 0 A, -1, 0 PIM

The Terriers won all four of their games over the last two weeks and are unbeaten this season (including exhibition and non-conference games): 7 wins, 1 tie. According to our reports, Glass is locked-in as the fourth line left wing after some shifts at RW during the non-conference games.

Highlights vs UMASS (Glass’s goal @ 2:22)

Philipp Grubauer, G, Kingston Frontenacs, OHL
Stats: 5 GP, 150 Sv, 14 GA, 303:39 TOI

He played well averaging 2.77 GA and saving 91.4% of the shots he saw (a little better than his season average). His best game was a match against the Frontenacs’ rival and Gru’s former club, the Belleville Bulls. He allowed two goals in the first but was perfect after, saving on 37 shots (including OT). In the shootout, he won the game for the Frontenacs. He’s now 3-0 in shootouts.

Caleb Herbert, С, Sioux City Musketeers, USHL
Stats: 4 GP, 2 G, 2 A, N/A, 6 PIM

Team USA won the  Junior A Challenge tournament in Penticton as Hebert recorded points in every game but the final. Herbert is among 37 players who recorded 3 points or more in this tournament (4 official games as first game against Canada West was unofficial). The Musketeers’ next game will be played on 11/19.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, RW, Traktor Chelyabinsk, KHL
Stats: 2 GP, 0 G, 0 A, -1, 0 PIM

Before the hiatus for the EuroHockeyTour tournament in Finland, Kuznetsov’s Traktor got shut out in two straight games. The KHL’s toughest team (and maybe also the worst team) destroyed Traktor then Ovechkin’s Dynamo got a solid win over guys from Chelyabinsk. Kuznetsov had about 9 minutes of TOI in each game (down from 17).

Nick Larson, C, Minnesota University Golden Gophers, NCAA
Stats: 0 GP, 0 G, 0 A, E, 0 PIM

Pride on Ice blog wrote about Nick’s injury: “Larson took a puck to the ankle in practice several weeks ago and has been out of the lineup since. Larson is a solid third/fourth line forward who logs a lot of ice time on the penalty kill. Larson may be back for the Wisconsin series, but if not, he’ll definitely be back after the bye week following their weekend set against the Badgers.”

Garrett Mitchell, RW, Regina Pats, WHL
Stats: 6 GP, 2 G, 1 A, +1, 21 PIM

The Pats had a rough start to November, winning only one of their six contests. Garrett didn’t score a lot, but he did earn a lot of PIMs. In one of the games, he was close to the Gordie Howe hat trick, but didn’t notch the goal. In his four most recent games, he had only one point and 2 PIM’s.

Highlights vs Moose Jaw Warriors (11/5)

Dmitri Orlov, D, Metallurg Novokuznetsk, KHL
Stats: 3 GP, 0 G, 0 A, 2, 2 PIM

Before the EuroHockeyTour, the KHL schedule included three of Kuznya’s games. Orlov didn’t help much, and Metallurg is dead last in the KHL with only 19 points in 25 games. The Good: Orlov was interviewed by our friends at RussianProspect.com.

The Eagles d-man provides defensive value while being non-existent on offense. The Pittsburgh native (uh oh) is scoreless in 9 of 10 outings.

Brandon Anderson, G, Lethbridge Hurricanes, WHL
Stats: 3 GP, 104 Sv, 7 GA, 195:00 TOI

Anderson was on top of his game over the last two weeks. He had more than 30 saves in each of first three games, and was able to get a shootout victory for his team October 20th against Regina and October 23rd against Prince Albert. If he had trouble in earlier shootouts, he’s much improved– saving 8 of 10 shots. Thanks to these tremendous games, Brandon was twice named first star and second star once. He has since caught a cold and missed the last two Hurricanes’ games.

Highlights vs Regina Pats, Highlights vs Saskatoon Blades

Greg Burke, LW, New Hampshire University Wildcats, NCAA
Stats: 1 GP, 0 G, 0 A, E, 2 PIM

The ’08 draftee returned to the line-up after an injury and did nothing in his only game back except earn a minor penalty for hooking in the 2nd period (which the Big Red did noy convert on). He also played on the fourth line.

Samuel Carrier, Lewiston MAINEiacs, QMJHL
Stats: Stats: 5 GP, 0 G, 1 A, -3, 6 PIM

Carrier had unusually bad stats over the past two weeks. He had only one assist and was unable to get a positive plus-minus rating. It might be easier for him to rack up the points now that Lewiston has acquired the talented and notorious Russian forward, Kirill Kabanov, the New York Islanders 2010 third round pick (65th overall).

Phil DeSimone, C, New Hampshire University Wildcats, NCAA
Stats: 3 GP, 2 G, 3 A, E, 8 PIM

DeSimone is in a totally different situation than fellow Caps Prospect and Wildcats Teammate Greg Burke: he’s an important player, a #1 centerman, and a great passer. He’s currently the leading scorer of his team (and NCAA top-10) with 2 G and 3 A this year (tied with Mike Borisenok).

Dan Dunn, G, St. Cloud State University Huskies, NCAA
Stats: 2 GP, 54 Sv, 4 GA, 118:49 TOI

The Huskies’ goalie grows more consistent but is still fighting with Mike Lee for the starting goalie spot. Lee has a worse Sv%/GAA but his  2-2-0 record is better than Dunn’s 1-2-1. Neither netminder has a shutout yet.

Cody Eakin, C, Swift Current Broncos, WHL
Stats: 3 GP, 2 G, 1 A, +1, 4 PIM

The Broncos’ schedule didn’t have a lot of games: only four in two weeks. Captain Cody Eakin played in only three of those games because of a knee injury sustained October 23rd against the Moose Jaw Warriors. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious, and after missing the game against the Pats- Cody returned to play against the Raiders and did very well, tallying his 9th goal of the season in an OT win October 23rd.

While the Majors have built a solid lead in their division, Brett Flemming continues to play well despite being quiet statistically. He was terrible in his first game of this reporting period, as he was on ice for all three goals Saginaw scored.  In the most recent game against the Sudbury Wolves, he broke a five-game pointless streak with a shorthanded assist.

Stanislav Galiev, LW, St John Sea Dogs, QMJHL
Stats: Stats: 6 GP, 5 G, 3 A, +2, 2 PIM

Stan continues to delight his fans. His Sea Dogs have won five of six games on their recent road trip. Stas scored five goals, added three assists, and was named first star of the game October 29th against Val-d’Or Foreurs. He’s now averaging just below one point-per-game (14 in 15), and has restored his plus-minus to even.

Andrew Glass, LW, Boston University Terriers, NCAA
Stats: 4 GP, 1 G, 0 A, E, 2 PIM

Like usual, Grubauer had a couple of great games– winning 2nd star and 1st star titles on October 24th and October 30th respectively. His most recent win was the hardest. He faced Owen Sound Attack, one of the best offensive teams in the OHL. During the game, Attack players put 57 shots on net, with Grubauer saving 53. Regulation ended in a 4-4 tie and neither team was able to get a goal in Overtime. In the shootout, Grubauer was the difference-maker, making saves on all three opponents’ attempts. Alan Quine scored and won it all for the Frontenacs.

Caleb Herbert, С, Sioux City Musketeers, USHL
Stats: 4 GP, 3 G, 2 A, +2, 6 PIM.

Even with two pointless games, Herbert was able to tie Max McCormick for the team lead in scoring with a total of 10 points. Also, Herbert is one of five players who are tied for third place in the USHL scoring race. Herbert’s minor penalties included two slashes and one trip.

Evgeny Kuznetsov, RW, Traktor Chelyabinsk, KHL
Stats: 6 GP, 2 G, 0 A, 1, 0 PIM

Kuznetsov finally got some big minutes, playing 17:15 after his two-goal game against Spartak. He also scored his first career OTGWG in the KHL. Our friends from RussianProspects.com provide a nice translation in which he lists his faves (Actor: Steven Seagal) and his achievements.

Highlights vs Spartak Moscow (Great move, no goal @ 3:20, oh no, wait, goal and GWG @ 6:40):

Stats: 0 GP, 0 G, 0 A, E, 0 PIM

Nick Larson has not been playing because of a foot injury. Larson has never played a full season for a NCAA or USHL team.

Garrett Mitchell, RW, Regina Pats, WHL
Stats: 5 GP, 2 G, 1 A, -3, 9 PIM

Mitchell had a goal in a game against the Swift Current Broncos, who played without their leader Cody Eakin. He then earned first star for the first time after a two-pont (1 G, 1 A) game against the Blades. Mitchell now has 8 points (5 G, 3 A). Also, Garrett had a fight against the Chiefs. It looks like he was trying to jumpstart his team, who were losing 4-0 at the time. Sadly, it didn’t help. They were destroyed by the Spokane Chiefs, 11-1.

Highlights vs Saskatoon Blades

Dmitri Orlov, D, Metallurg Novokuznetsk, KHL
Stats: 5 GP, 1 G, 1 A, 1, 6 PIM

Orlov’s playing time dipped this reporting period as he averaged only 15-18 mins TOI. However, in the 10/30 game against Atlant, he played over 20 minutes. Also worth mentioning– in the game against Barys– he scored a goal and assisted on the OTGWG. Due to the team’s poor record, his team’s coach was recently fired.

The #2 rated NCAA team lost two of three over the last two weeks, and Wey was put on the third defensive pairing twice. The Eagles Defenseman continues his race for a spot on the USA Junior National Team.
