Last week, Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom celebrated his 25th birthday in Russia. To mark the day, Dynamo Moscow fans gave him a birthday cake in the shape of a hockey jersey. The club published this video of  an adoring Russian throng singing “Happy Birthday” to him. It’s cute, but Backstrom chanting “Dy-Na-Mo” along with them at the end is enough to break your hockey heart.

It’s like seeing your ex-girlfriend date someone else. You think you’re just on a break or something, but here she is getting serious with someone else. Now they’re holding hands and exchanging stupid looks and omigod now they have a dog? What’shegotthatidon’thavedammit. Ughhhh. This sucks. Give him back give him back. We saw him first.

Since arriving in Russia to play for Alex Ovechkin’s Dynamo Moscow, Nicklas Backstrom has gotten the royal treatment. He’s lived at Dynamo’s practice facility, forced to take #99 as a jersey number (because he’s so darn great), and been invited by Ovi to some sweet celebrity-hosted parties. On Backstrom’s 25th birthday bash on Friday, the Dynamo organization and its fans went even further, creating giant banners and signs for Nicky. After his four-point game, Backstrom was then given a birthday cake. Granted, it didn’t have any of those rocket-fueled candles like Ovi’s did earlier this year.

Hm. It’s almost like they’re trying to steal him away from us or something…

We asked you, the noble hordes of the Russian Machine, to congratulate our hero Alex Ovechkin on his 25th year of life.  You had to make a birthday card.  The only rule was that you had to use a cheap graphic editor to make it.

What we didn’t tell you was that we didn’t have to follow the same rules. Above, is our card for Ovi via new RMNB illustrator, Rachel Cohen. Welcome to the team!

Meanwhile, you guys knocked this assignment out of the park.  Like Shakespeare unto the sonnet, you transcended the limitations of the form and blazed new trails of Art with a capital A. Lucy Brown, writer of one our favorite Caps blogs Hockey is my Boyfriend, created Ovie’s name out of some of his favorite things. I love the creativity here.

Kristen M. shows us that Ovi and the Red Power Ranger have an awful lot in common. Who knew?

Using nothing but logo trickery, I Rock The Red, created a mutant, double-headed Weagle which hints at Ovi’s Russian heritage.

Mcawful submitted this lovely ditty. And surprisingly, she was the only person to allude to or illustrate ripped jeans. We will admit however that we can’t stop laughing at the sleepover illustration where Nicky looks so incredibly excited and Semin is smoking. What a great touch!
