Elliot Segal glares as Alex Ovechkin high-fives an invisible child.

The second annual Caps Convention was held this past Saturday at the Washington Convention Center. Along with the entire Washington Capitals roster, a number of prominent alumni made appearances, including Olie Kolzig, Peter Bondra, Yvon Labre, and Rod Langway. Fans got to meet and greet their favorite players, get autographs, and demand “Happy Birthday” be sung to them.

The event was a tremendous success. RMNB’s own Neil Greenberg was there to document the day. Enjoy!

What started with an apology from Caps PR Mogul Nate Ewell ended with information that sent the Twittersphere into a tizzy: The Washington Capitals have signed forward Tomas Fleischmann to a one-year contract. The pact is reported to be for $2.6 million and avoids a potentially messy arbitration hearing that was set to be heard Wednesday.

The important thing to remember here is that the Capitals were going to sign Fleischmann to a one-year deal regardless. You simply do not let a developed asset like a 20-goal scorer walk away for nothing, and avoiding arbitration helps preserve goodwill on both sides. The only important detail was: for how much?

And that seems to be the rub for most: $2.6 million is too much. But is it?

The fine people over at Japer’s Rink did an excellent mock arbitration briefing that illustrates what Flash’s career has amounted to at this point:

It is beyond debate that Tomas Fleischmann is a skilled hockey player. He has improved his per-game goal and point totals in each of his seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), registering career highs nearly across the board during the 2009-10 regular season and finishing sixth in goals scored on an offensively potent Washington Capitals team.

So the question becomes: what is Flesichman’s 56G/72A /128P in 260 games worth?

The one player with similar career stats at the same ages for the first five years of their career is Valtteri Filppula, who in 290 games has boxcar stats of 52G/77A/129P – never scoring more than 19 goals in a season – making $3.5M in 2010-11.

Then we have the UFA/RFA climate, such as Clarke MacArthur’s $2.4M award that the Atlanta Thrashers walked away from and Matt Moulson also avoiding arbitration after agreeing to $2.45 with the Islanders, along with Alexander Frolov and Alexei Ponikarovsky each signing $3M contracts as UFAs.

This pegs Fleischmann’s value somewhere in the $2.5 to $3.5 million range – despite him being terrible when it came to puck possession (having the worst 5v5 CORSI ON for any Capital playing more than 20 games) or that he was on the ice for more Goals Against per 60 minutes than any other Caps skater.

Luckily for Fleischmann the market (and potential) dictates value, and a 25-year old forward on the upside of his career simply cannot be let go for nothing.

So join me in welcoming the Caps opening night <s>2nd line left wing</s> <s>mice-droppings collector</s> 2nd line center, and let us know what you think Flash is worth in the comments.

Tonight, the Montreal Canadiens needed to respond. After being taken to the woodshed Monday night, it was time for the Habs to show the Eastern Conference’s best team their mettle. Instead, the highest scoring team in the NHL showed Montreal the formula on how they won over 50 games in the Regular Season: Cruise through 40 minutes of play and then turn it on in the third. The result? The Capitals win an error-filled slugfest 6-3 and now look to close out the series Friday at Verizon Center in front of their Racuous Red Rockers. Oh boy!

La saison de golf commence vendredi pour les Canadiens:

What more can we say. There’s no STOPING #8. After being held scoreless in game 1, Alex Ovechkin has a staggering 8 points in three games. Methinks it’s time to celebrate, Russian Machine style. Tonight, our burly Road Warrior had 2 Goals, 3 points, 3 shots on goal and finished the game a +3. Now if only he could learn how to successfully buy tickets from scalpers and help dress Semyon Varlamov before he leaves the hotel, we could call this guy a global icon.

Oh Varly. Don’t you know my love for you has never swayed? Even during those rag-a-muffin days during the season when the haters were out in force and others openly pined for Tomas Vokoun, I knew you were the wunderkid this team needed in goal during the playoffs. Even when my own writer wrote an opus demanding that Bruce Boudreau turn back to Jose Theodore in Game 3, I never doubted you. Tonight, if I may, can I officially declare that the old Semyon Varlamov is back? The gnarly Varly single-handedly kept the Capitals in the game in the second period as Montreal pumped 21 shots on goal, easily their most successful period of play in the series. Unfortunately for the Habs, they learned the hard way that Semyon’s glove hand is not weak. Varly made three consecutive 10 bell glove saves late in the second period, which seemed to take the life out of the Habs.

Actually, maybe it was that shorthanded goal by Mike Knuble that killed all that mo.’ Regardless, this bullet is dedicated to <s>Nicklas Backstrom</s> Boyd Gordon for making that goal happen. On a gift 2 on 1, the grinder-turned-offensive-juggernaut skated with a purpose into the offensize zone and shot a perfectly placed saucer to Kanoobs that would even make Wayne Gretzky proud. The result? A layup for the garbageman with six seconds to go in the second. With that clutch goal, the Caps tied the game 2-2 heading into the intermission. The Bell Centre sounded like a library.

And then it got quieter. After consecutive goals by Alex Ovechkin and Jason Chimera 52 seconds apart, people in Montreal must have realized that maybe this wouldn’t be their year. So far through four games, the Capitals have outshot the Habs 62-29 in the third period of this series. That’s what better teams do.

If anyone knows where the old Alex Semin is, can you tell him we want him back? We’ll even reward $28,000 for any helpful information on his whereabouts. I’ll be frank. On Ovechkin’s second goal of the night, Semin maybe showed us 5 dazzling seconds of pure awesome Russianness. Then for the rest of the game, I found myself holding my head in my heads, screaming “WHAT ARE YOU DOING, SASHA??”

For people who still hate Tom Poti, this stat may force you to change your thinking… and your underpants. The defensive pairing of Tom Poti and John Carlson are a combined +15 during this series. The rest of the defense is a +5. It can’t all be Captain America, right?

Caps Senior PR Man Nate Ewell gets a big-time bullet tonight for using reverse-pyschology on the Hockey Gods which created all the good karma Mike Knuble would need to score his second goal of the game. Clutch tweet, Nate. Well played.

How bout’ them Hershey Bears?? Tonight, the chocolate and white concluded their best-of-seven series with Bridgeport, after they beat the living tar out of the Sound Tigers 4-1. The Bears will now advance to the East Division finals, where they’ll play the Albany River Rats, Carolina’s AHL Affiliate. Karl Alzner, Zach Miskovic, Kyle Wilson and Alex Giroux (power play) all scored while Michal Neuvirth made 6 saves in the victory. Bridgeport only had 7 shots on goal.

Lastly, some humor. Tonight on SportsNite, Lisa Hillary presented her latest 10 Questions segment with Bruce “What’s an iPod” Boudreau. What did we learn about the affable coach? Apparently, the thing that irks Bruce the most about <s>Alex Semin</s> a player is when he doesn’t take the game seriously enough. If “Gabby” the movie came out next week, Mickey Rooney would be the star. And does Bruce Boudreau like garden salads? “Look at me, does it look like I’m a salad eater?”

Anyways, I think Mike Knuble summed it up best tonight when he said postgame, “If Varly wasn’t as sharp, we could have been down a couple goals and this could have been a totally different game.” Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the win, but let’s have a full 60 minute effort Friday Night, Cappies. For once, I would love to actually watch a game without having to take heart medicine. And with that said, WOOOOO!!! Thirteen more wins to go!!

One of my Christmas gifts this year was a ticket to see the Washington Capitals play the New York Rangers at the infamous Madison Square Garden. I didn’t realize on that rainy Christmas morning that the ticket would gain me admission to witness the record-shattering winning streak, Alex Ovechkin’s 500th career point and Bruce Boudreau’s 200th game as the Capitals bench boss. Wow. To say I was anxious to attend the game, would be an understatement. I had never followed a team into a rival arena, and there I was amongst all the of the Rangers faithful. The Rangers were having a rough time recently and the Washington Capitals were unstoppable for 2 weeks. All the elements were in place for MSG to get rocked last night.

I had been in Manhattan the week prior to the game trying to find an apartment to move into. This gave me a chance to figure out the NYC public transit (FYI, DC’s is far superior and a whole lot less confusing). So after taking the green 4 to the gray S, to the red 2, I arrived at Madison Square Garden, total trip time: 45 minutes to travel a little over 4 miles (Oy!). I figured I could follow the masses of blue and red to the main entrance of MSG. Wrong! The Rangers fans don’t support their team the way Caps fans Rock the Red. I made it through the bag check and up to where my ticket was going to be scanned and was halted. It was 15 minutes before 6pm, and no one was allowed inside the arena yet. So there I stood in my red coat concealing my Capitals gear, surrounded by people much bigger than me decked out in blue. It took me 10 minutes to work up the courage to show my Capitals pride, that and it was hot as hell and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I survived those first few minutes of being a Capitals faithful in unchartered territory (Ed note: The second RMNB Fan in consecutive games. AWESOME.); feeling like a deer during hunting season, awaiting someone to end my peace and quiet. Except for a few dirty looks no one bothered me. My own little bubble expanded with each Capitals fan I encountered. There weren’t a ton of us, but just enough to show our support for the guys during the game. I detoured to a concession stand to get my traditional bottle of water. To find out that at MSG, they take your bottle top. What the heck? Are fans that immature at MSG that they can’t be trusted with a little white piece of plastic? Really? I grumbled and took my bottle and headed off to my seat, almost directly behind the net that Theo protected twice.

Madison Square Garden is very old inside and the Rangers organization will definitely benefit from the reconstruction. The arena lacks the streamline affect of the Verizon Center, and the atmosphere that Ted Leonsis promotes during a game. Honestly, the place was rather empty until right before the puck dropped and didn’t completely fill until 10 minutes into the first. I know, it’s sometimes like that at the Verizon Center but at MSG, people were willing to wander around while the puck was in play and leisurely take their seats. Which drove me nuts, my seats were 4 rows up from the walk way that would take you around the whole arena, which made it really difficult to see the puck if it was along the boards behind the net. I loved the fact that people would yell at others to sit down in their own special New Yorker way, without even batting an eyelash. I would love to do that at Verizon Center sometimes but I digress.

I wandered down to the glass during warm-ups. To get really close the glass, you had to be on the sides, people are not allowed to crowd around behind the net. Some noteworthy moments from warm-ups: the Capitals being booed when they came onto the ice followed by Rangers fans watching intently and begging for pucks to be dropped over the glass, Eric Fehr making one 13 year old Caps fan’s night when he tossed him a puck while exiting the ice, and Semin giving the crowd the stare down while awaiting his turn for a shot. I was amongst that group and the only Caps fan right there, so I hope he was happy to see a supporter. Warm-ups came and went and I hurried back to my seat to find myself surrounded by a handful of Capitals fans. The Rangers fans that were directly around me were nice and actually chit-chatted with me during the intermissions. Guess I lucked out being that close to the ice, I have a feeling the “blue seats” would have been brutal.

I’m not going to re-account every detail of the game, you saw it on CSN. You read about it here on RMNB, but there were moments I was over-joyed followed by the sheer annoyance of being surrounded by opposing fans. Nothing stung more than getting that first goal of the game and standing up, cheering loud and proud; to being silenced not even 30 seconds later by the raging crowd as the Rangers reclaimed the lead. I wanted to curl up under a rock and hide, man was it going to be a long game. This roller-coaster of emotions continued throughout the 2nd period, capping off with Ovechkin scoring that beautiful goal with 8 seconds left in the period. That 500th point happened right in front of me and it felt amazing to stick it to the Rangers fans after all of their cheering and chanting of “Ovechkin sucks”.

After that huge momentum swing to end the 2nd period, I had to go celebrate with some familiar Capitals faces. I went on a search to find the North Side Press Box, because it housed Caps Employees Nate Ewell and Brett Leonhardt for the evening. Okay it was no easy task to find exactly where they were sitting in the box, and along my journey through the upper levels of MSG, I was getting booed and harassed by angry Rangers’ fans. Hey! Don’t take it out of me, it’s not my fault Ovechkin just rocked your [house]. I finally found them but only had 5 minutes to spare before the final period began. We got to catch up for a bit, and I was asked by Nate where my jersey was. I support the whole team not one player so no jersey for me, I just rock my Capitals hoodie. As Nate and Brett had a good chuckle about how the fans were getting annoyed with us cheering on our team, I left the press box with hope that the Caps would turn this game around and pull out a win. Recently, the 3rd period had been good to us, and I hoped the trend would continue.

The Capitals faithful dispersed throughout MSG were in full force in the 3rd period. We were down 1 goal to tie it, 2 for the win. I found myself longing for a little “Unleash the Fury” or the Horn Guy to start a “Let’s Go Caps” chant but that all had to take place in my head. Speaking of “Unleash the Fury”, the Rangers have a poor man’s version that barely got the crowd going and some weird bald guy that danced to a song. Yeah, I’ll definitely take our Verizon Center fixtures any day of the week. I went completely nuts when Tom Poti tied the game and then Nicklas Backstrom scored what is now dubbed the game-winning goal. Now I just had to keep my fingers crossed that we could hold out those last few minutes. It was nerve-wrecking and I kept dreading the moment the masses would jump up and scream and cheer with the tying goal. You know what, it never came. It never happened, I stood up and screamed my head off and gave the biggest cheer that my single voice could give from my section when the Washington Capitals completed the 12th straight win. It was highly amusing to see the annoyed Rangers fans, especially the one’s around me who were trying to ignore me. Life was good.

I slowly made my way out of Madison Square Garden with my head held a little bit higher and I felt extremely lucky that I witnessed all of that in one evening. It was a great Christmas present and I would definitely travel to another arena to support the Washington Capitals.

Here are my tweets from the game:

Back at the apt, exhausted, freezing, with the biggest grin on my face! #CAPS won!! 12 straight baby. MSG was an experience, I tell ya

@nateewell I’ll take our @TheCapstronaut over that bald rags fan dancing any day…

Booyah!! #CAPS score on PP

Heading to the press box to visit some #CAPS pr guys!!

Some kid has the rangers logo shaved on the back of his head. I’m having an 80′s flashback…

This hurts to watch. This cheering is pissing me off. Ugh dammit! #CAPS

Third time is the charm! First the glass, second the rags, third the net! #CAPS fans stand and cheered here at MSG

The King was not happy with that goal. He just got pissed off at himself. Yayayayayay #CAPS

Really #CAPS?? Score one and let one in. And I got the dirtiest looks from people when I cheered our goal

It’s okay #CAPS. This place is going nuts now, ugh dammit

Ugh a penguins fan just walked in front of me. Ewwww #CAPS

Bunch of young guys rolled in with #CAPS gear and a dad in tow. Don’t feel so out numbered now… Well I lie. I do!

Come on!!! Let me to my seat you jerkfaces. Grrrr #CAPS for the win in crowd appeal!

[Ed. Note: Since the RMNB group members are stationed everywhere in this area except for DC and Northern Virginia, we again had to miss out on an awesome event run by the Washington Capitals. But lucky for us, fan of the Blog, and mini-celebrity of the day Emily Karol was here to bail us out with all the details, photos and gossip. Take it away, Emily!]

Emily’s Summary of the Event

This past Sunday, I was lucky enough to attend the first-ever CapsCare Casino and Auction. Let me preface this piece with telling you, I’m an actress trying to make it in this crazy world and only had enough money for a VIP ticket and nothing else. So sadly, I didn’t bid on any of the auctions and the $50,000 “fun bucks” they gave us remained in my program the whole evening. I forgot to trade it in for the 5 raffle tickets, eh… c’est la vie.

Emily Getting Ready For the Event

I booked a room at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center for the evening. They offered a discounted rate for a huge room if you were with the Capitals and I knew I would not be capable of driving my car the hour it would take me to get back to Annapolis, MD. Anyways, Check-In for the event began at 6pm, with the VIP portion starting at 6:30. I was, of course, fashionably late and didn’t arrive until a mere 5 minutes before the VIP party began. The line was long and the ages ranged from 60′s to 21. (No one under 21 the whole event, there was an open bar after all. Two in the VIP room and four in the casino).

There is one phrase that came to mind when I walked in the VIP room. Complete Chaos. It has nothing to do with the way the Capitals organization handled this portion. No, it’s what happens when you take about 100/150 people and let them loose in a room that usually houses business-meetings but was now hosting the number 1 team in the East of the NHL. The guys were casually spread around the room, so one could just walk up to them and ask for a picture, autograph, and most times just hold a casual conversation. I decided to take the first 20 minutes and observe the room from a bar table. (Didn’t figure out until the end of the VIP, that I was sitting next to the table with all of the players wives/ girlfriends). Neuvi was the only member of the team not at the event. After doing one trip around the room with my Merlot in hand, I decided I needed to jump in and meet some of the players. I tried to get all of the Young Guns, but Semin alluded me every time I got a glimpse. The players were extremely personable and gave attention to each high-paying fan that approached them. I was able to track down and get photographed with Green, Backstrom, Laich, Fleischmann, (Brendan) Morrison, Knuble, Ovi, Laing, Bradley, and Alzner. The guys were extremely nice and very personable. (I could write a detail of each meeting but that would take forever, just drop me a message on twitter if you want specifics.) Let me just say though that every one does #needmorebradley and also they #needmoreknubleandlaing.

7:30 finally rolled around and we were being casually ushered out of the room by a dinner bell. There was no “alright, get out. Now.”, it was more “please go spend your money on the casino and enjoy dinner”. So the ranks of fans swelled from 150 to about 600. I now had access to a huge ballroom which housed the casino tables, seating-areas that were on raised platforms with white leather couchs, food galore, and a house band keeping the music going all night. Not once did the event feel over-crowded though. The players were let-loose onto the casino floor, and they gambled away there money at many of the tables. They stopped and posed with fans when anyone asked. The casino was completely mellow and I found myself running into a bunch of the players and chit-chatting with them. Especially, Knuble at the sushi table and the consensus was that it all looked amazing and one of us should run off with a platter.

Outside of the casino was the silent auction tables and the Rock Band and Wii Bowling stations. I also found service for my iphone and was able to tweet about things more immediately. I spent most of my evening in this area because some hilarious things ensued: Ovi, Laich, Fehr, and the Red Rockers failing “Eye of the Tiger” on Rock Band, Fleischmann “trying” to play Rock Band, Mr. Nasty being quietly intense on wii bowling and meeting Sloan, Stretch and Nate Ewell in one fell swoop. Then something really exciting happened to me. I made my way back over to Rock Band and before a huge crowd developed, was able to offer my services as a singer for the next few rounds. I got to rock out “Eye of the Tiger” with Theo on the drums and Mr. Nasty playing guitar (on the Hard level, I might add). We got to play a few more songs together while a crowd formed and took pictures. That was definitely a highlight of my evening, and I love the pictures that http://capitals.nhl.com have of me with Theo and Schultz.

Around 9:20, it was announced that the live auction would start in the ballroom. One by one the guys lined up onstage with each item they were a part of. Green stood up onstage with a portrait of himself. He did not paint this, but it was from his personal collection. Another item was a ping-pong tourney with Morrison, Green, Backstrom, and Fleischmann at the Phonebooth. Boudreau got in on the action and was auctioning off the chance to attend a cocktail party at his residence with Dean and Bob and their wives. Boudreau made sure to get in a few quips during the bidding, offering a sauna at his place to the winner, but there will be no sleepover. Haha. I didn’t document each winning bid, but I can safely say that they all ranged between $6000 and $9000. A lot of money was raised during the live auction alone, that will benefit the Capitals charities.

Sadly, 10 o’clock rolled around and people started filing out of the ballroom and waiting in line at the coat check. I didn’t rush, since all I had to do was stumble up to the 10 floor. (Told you, it would come in handy. I was completely exhausted.) The players slowly dispersed and heading off to other destinations, whether glamorous or domestic. I discovered a crowd of people in the main lobby watching the OT of the football game. Schultz, Pothier, and Laing were all up there watching the game. The game and the CapsCare Casino and Auction ended in that overtime field goal.

I had an unbelievable time and it was completely worth $400 for the VIP ticket. I can’t wait to hear about how much the event raised for charity. I know I had a blast and it looked like every one else and the players did too. Bravo to Ted Leonsis and the Washington Capitals. You thoroughly entertained this fan.
