<p><strong>Joel Ward</strong> was a playoff hero for Nashville last year, leading the league in postseason goals at one point in the first round and ending with better than a point per game.</p>
<p>That grit and clutch goal-scoring was why General Manager George McPhee outbid a number of other teams to <a class="vt-p" href="http://www.russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2011/07/02/joel-ward-looks-to-bring-playoff-success-to-the-district/" target="_blank">sign Ward in the summer</a> to an expensive 4-year, $12 million contract.</p>
<p>In the regular season, however, things didn&#8217;t go as planned. Ward was benched one game for missing a meeting, scratched several games for poor play, and managed to tally just six goals. It was the worst offensive season of his career&#8211; though he spent most of it assigned as a fourth liner.</p>
<p>But Joel Ward&#8217;s play in the regular season isn&#8217;t what got him glory in Nashville. And it&#8217;s not what just put him in Capitals&#8217; record books forever.</p>
<p><span id="more-33424"></span></p>
<p>In the second minute of overtime, 39-year-old right wing Mike Knuble took the puck strong to the net, but Tim Thomas kicked out the rebound. Ward found the puck unguarded. Composed, he backhanded the puck past Thomas. Sudden victory! It was his first goal of the playoffs.</p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tih8Z9oPcYg?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tih8Z9oPcYg?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p>The 31-year-old Ontario-native <a href="http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/04/25/capitals-oust-bruins-by-thinnest-of-margins-with-game-7-overtime-win/" target="_blank">talked about the goal with reporters after the game</a>. “They were looking to dump, and I thought we might go off on a change, and then I saw we had a little bit of a break up ice. It happened so fast. I knew [Knuble] was going to take the puck to the net, and I was just trying to follow it up … I saw it lying there, and gave it one of the hardest whacks I’ve ever given a puck.”</p>
<p>He continued: &#8220;It&#8217;s huge. [The goal] felt rewarding for sure. I wanted to contribute as much as I could in this series and take a load off the big guys.&#8221;</p>
<p>Ward now joins Dale Hunter and Sergei Federov as the only Capitals to score a Game Seven game-winning goal.</p>

<p><em>Evgeny Kuznetsov is introduced to the crowd. (Photo credit: <a href="http://www.khlallstar.com/" target="_blank">KHL All-Star Game site</a>)</em></p>
<p>Our all-<strong>Evgeny Kuznetsov/</strong>all-the-time policy continues with this contractually obligated recap of the 2012 KHL All-Star Game and SuperSkills competition held in Riga, Latvia, on Saturday.</p>
<p>Kuznetsov nearly won in both the Fastest Skater and Breakaway Challenge. He also tallied a goal and an assist for Team Fedorov in their 15-11 win over Team Ozolins during the All-Star Game.</p>
<p>Below the jump, we&#8217;ve recapped our favorite moments from the the KHL&#8217;s signature event.</p>
<p><span id="more-27619"></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Team Ozolins&#8217; Mikhail Anisin Sings &#8220;O Sole Mio!&#8221;</span></p>
<p><iframe width="607" height="341" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Vv8jhxOLGOY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>During the SuperSkills&#8217; competition, the KHL passed the mic off to Dynamo Moscow&#8217;s <strong>Mikhail Anisin,</strong> who performed &#8220;O Sole Mio!&#8221; Yes. This actually happened. Fedor also tells me that Anisin studied music during school and once had an hour-long concert while with Sibir at their Fanfest. The 5&#8217;5&#8221; tenor also doesn&#8217;t mind fighting and <a href="http://youtu.be/jJQyMoOmaXQ" target="_blank">stomping on other opponents (#88 in the video)</a>.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Fastest Skater Competition</span></p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cnIzsnb4OL0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cnIzsnb4OL0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p>Evgeny Kuznetsov lost by 0.01 seconds to <strong>Mikelis Redlihs</strong> of Team Ozolins. When Kuzya was asked about his near win, he replied,&#8221;I&#8217;ve never been a stand-out in speed, probably something&#8217;s wrong with the timer.&#8221; Oh, Zhenya.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Hardest Shot Competition</span></p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hx_rY8NR_zI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Hx_rY8NR_zI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p>Kuznetsov&#8217;s teammate on Traktor Chelyabinsk, <strong>Alexander Ryazantsev</strong>, won the hardest shot competition with a &#8220;world record&#8221; of 183.67 km/h or 114.127 mph. Fedor tells us this is the first time anyone&#8217;s ever hit the 180 km/h mark. While that&#8217;s impressive and everything, it&#8217;s hard to take this feat very seriously when KHL players shoot approximately 7 feet closer to the net than the NHL does.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Breakaway Competition</span></p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/i97HgGbkmKg?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/i97HgGbkmKg?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p><strong>Vladimir Tarasenko</strong> won the competition &#8212; beating out defending champion Kuznetsov and Mikelis Redlihs &#8212; with his devious puck-literally-on-a-string trick. Kuznetsov&#8217;s attempts begin at 2:50 above.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Captain&#8217;s Challenge</span></p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ca_PFRoGpsI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ca_PFRoGpsI?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p><strong>Sergei Fedorov</strong> and <strong>Sandis Ozolins</strong> &#8212; two class acts and legendary players &#8212; play hockey billiards, hockey bowling, hockey volleyball, hockey basketball, and hockey biathlon on the ice. A novel idea by the KHL. The former Capital, Federov, ended up winning. Coverage of the event starts at the 3:00 mark above.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 18px;">Lokomotiv Memorial Ceremony</span></p>
<p><object width="607" height="338" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0hGo-77BGmE?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed width="607" height="338" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0hGo-77BGmE?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" allowFullScreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" /></object></p>
<p>The fans chant &#8220;Lo-ko, Lo-ko&#8221; at 1:28. This gave me goosebumps.</p>

Since the KHL is about to wrap up the first half of it&#8217;s current season, we  gave Fedor the tall task of tracking down every KHL player with any Washington Capital ties and asked him to let us know how they&#8217;ve been doing &#8211; good or bad.  So basically if a guy has played for the Capitals in the past (Andrei Nikolishin), played on one of our AHL Affiliated Teams (Brandon Sugden), or been drafted by the team (Dmitri Orlov), they&#8217;re on the list.  We thought this was a good idea because we honestly miss some of our favorite erstwhile Caps from the past like: Viktor Kozlov, Sergei Fedorov, Richard Zednik, and Chris Simon, and thought this would be a great opportunity for everyone to get caught up.  Sadly, that human-ball-of-waste known as Jaromir Jagr is on the list, too, but since he&#8217;s one of Fedor&#8217;s favorite players on Avangard Omsk, we&#8217;re going to let it slide.</p>
<p>Anyways, below the fold is a huge table full of stats and information on all the <strong>Former Caps in the KHL</strong>. </p>

<p>When he came to Russia in 2008, <a href="http://www.sports.ru/hockey/5470997.html">he told reporters</a>: &#8220;I came to Russia to play hockey. If I have to fight, I will do it.  No problem. But the game is the main thing for me.&#8221; Time was moving along while he played and sometimes fought, but he left Russia at the start of last December due to &#8220;family reasons.&#8221;  Simon has since returned and played some games since. He did not participate in the massive Vityaz &#8211; Avangard brawl.</td>

<p>The big talk about Sugden in Russia is the brawl between Avangard and Vityaz. <a href="http://news.sport-express.ru/2010-01-13/339643/">He fought hard in the warm-up</a>, and here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.sports.ru/hockey/63913837.html">what he said about his former teammate and fight opponent</a> Alexander Svitov: &#8221;Yeah, actually I visited Svitov in hotel a day before the game. He&#8217;s my old friend. We played together in Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. We talked, thought of old times, laughed. [...] [In the game] he hit my teammate in the head, and I had to intercede for him. Svitov accepted my invitation to dance.&#8221;</td>

<p>Maybe THIS is a record &#8211; this guy played for four teams in the last seven months! He was traded from CSKA to Metallurg Novokuznetsk for a 1st round draft pick and played 14 games. &#8220;Kuznya&#8221; made a buyout then he signed with Dynamo Minsk.  He was traded to Vityaz one week ago. He was pretty popular player in Russia year ago because he plaed for the CSKA &#8211; one of most popular clubs in Russia.</td>
