Shocker: Caps Sign Right Wing Justin Williams for Two Years

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 13: Justin Williams #14 of the Los Angeles Kings of the Los Angeles Kings celebrates with the Stanley Cup after the Kings 3-2 double overtime victory against the New York Rangers in Game Five of the 2014 Stanley Cup Final at Staples Center on June 13, 2014 in Los Angeles, California. No one saw this coming. The Washington Capitals have signed right wing Justin Williams, formerly of the Los Angeles Kings. It’s a two-year contract worth an average value of $3.25 million.

Williams is a three-time Cup winner and now he’s going to play for the Caps– maybe with Ovi and Nicky. That’s a good price and a good term for a very good player. This is awesome.

Williams has been in the game 15 making rap tunes, ever since honeys was wearing sassoon. He won the Cup once with Carolina and twice with the Kings, winning the Smythe in 2014. Last season, he scored 18 goals and 23 points for LA.

Here’s some neat data vis via @IneffectiveMath.

And even more via some guy I don’t know who

Basically, Williams is a whiz-bang possession player. He hasn’t had a negative relative possession score since 2003 (i.e. his teams have the puck more when he’s on the ice). Sure, he’s got some miles on him, but this is looking to be a good signing by Brian MacLellan. Should be fun!
