Wednesday night in Edmonton, Alex Ovechkin generously tossed one of his Bauer hockey sticks to tiny Caps fan Cash Niebergall. The gesture went viral on social media and moved Cash’s mother Miranda to tears. In a guest post on RMNB Thursday, Miranda explained how Cash — nicknamed Niebvechkin by his hockey teammates — hoped to get Ovi, his idol and favorite hockey player, to sign his stick. Cash waited after the game, but never ran into Ovi.
He will now get the opportunity.
After hearing about Cash’s desire to meet him, Alex Ovechkin got tickets for Cash and the rest of his family to come see the Caps play the Calgary Flames Sunday night. Ovechkin will also meet Cash after the game.
Sportsnet’s Scott Oake first reported the news during the Caps’ 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, Saturday night. Ovechkin and the Capitals reached out to the family through RMNB.
Cash found out about Ovi’s gift on his eighth birthday, Friday night, while the family was eating dinner.
Cash’s mother was very excited when she found out.
“OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will make that happen!!!!!!,” Miranda wrote to me in an email, accepting Ovi’s offer.
Suffice to say, make sure to tune into CSN Mid-Atlantic Sunday night to see the two meet.
Remember Cash from Edmonton? @ovi8 invited him and his family to come to tonight's game in Calgary and they'll meet after the game! #Gr8 pic.twitter.com/q43mZK3NoX
