Alex Ovechkin has scored his 9th goal of the season. And while the assist belongs to Nick Backstrom according to the scoresheet, the real credit for this goal belongs to the intrepid fans of Verizon Center, who, as the power play was about to fizzle out, offered this word of advice to the league’s most profilic scorer:
Shoot!

While Brandon Saad served a penalty for interference, the Caps mustered a shortened PP effort. As time dwindled, the crowd grew ornery. A chorus of “shoot” rang from the rafters.
Patiently, Nick Backstrom held the puck near the faceoff dot. He spied a high-risk pass to Ovi in the Ovi spot and went for it.
A Blue Jacket got a piece of the pass, but Ovechkin adjusted in an instant, stepping forward to release from nearer than usual. A lovely goal.
Backstrom records his 8th point in 4 games, Ovi is one goal of shy of double-digit goals, and the Caps lead 2-1.
Not bad for a Sunday afternoon.
Thanks, fans!
