Alex Ovechkin scores career goal number 540 after beautiful ‘alley oop’ pass from Dmitry Orlov

It’s a holiday goal party and Alex Ovechkin just got invited.

10:48 into the second period, the Russian machine joined John Carlson in the goal column, scoring on a breakaway. The goal was stunning but the pass by Dmitry Orlov was a work of art that even Picasso would curse at.

Watch as Orlov forces the turnover and then chucks a perfectly placed lob pass to Alex Ovechkin hiding out at opponent’s blue line. Ovi settles the puck down and scores on the backhand, as Andrei Vasilevskiy goes for the pokecheck.

CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Craig Laughlin called the pass an alley oop, the NHL’s equivalent of a pass and dunk.

That’s career goal number 540 for Ovechkin who is now 10 points shy of 1,000 in his career.

Reminder: Ovechkin is still only 31-years-old.
