Back in business: Caps win 5-3!

RMNB recaps are back! Peter’s luggage isn’t, but RMNB is just in time for RIVALRY NIGHT against the Bruins.

The Caps took the lead just over three minutes into the game when Nick Backstrom sprung TJ Oshie in all alone. Oshie had a cup of coffee, took a couple drags off his smoke, tied his skate, and then deposited the puck behind Tuukka Rask before any Bruins player could catch him. Later in the first period, the Caps first line struck again as Backstrom one-timed home a Matt Niskanen rebound. Brad Marchand, who is annoying, scored a PP goal to cut the Caps lead to 2-1 before the first ended.

Nice Guy Brad Marchand added another PP goal early in the second to tie the game. Alex Ovechkin put the Caps back in the lead 3-2 with a PP in the last minute of the second.

Brett Connolly gave the Caps a 4-2 lead early in the third after a tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Evgeny Kuznetov and Dmitry Orlov. Kuznetsov decided to put a bow on it with a late goal. The Bruins scored a late goal. Whatever.

  • Please come watch the game and hang out with us on Saturday. Head over to the event page to RSVP.
  • Justin Williams missed tonight’s game with a lower body injury. Hopefully the veteran winger, who would probably provide great value on a two-year contract extension, is back in action soon.
  • That meant Jay Beagle got bumped up to play wing on the second line. Serious, non-snarky question: does Barry Trotz love anything as much as he loves Jay Beagle?
  • You know who else might be great value on a two-year extension? Brett Connolly.
  • Check out this clip of Karl Alzner’s nice play on the PK? Yes, the same Alzner who will probably not provide great value on his next contract.
  • Many folks on Twitter disagreed, but that trip call on Evgeny Kuznetsov early in the second was most definitely a legit penalty. It was hard to tell from the first replay angle, but he pitchforked David Krejci in the back of a leg.
  • The Caps first PP of the night was awful. The second was phenomenal.
  • Did you or did you not stand up  off your couch/chair/floor/futon/ottoman/exercise ball etc during that passing sequence on Connolly’s goal?
  • Alex Ovechkin continues to climb the NHL all-time scoring list. It’s such a joy to watch him play for the good guys and we should constantly remind ourselves of that.
  • Tom Wilson had a fine assist during his only shift on the second line. He probably should have played there the entire game.
  • Let’s check in on Peter.

  • Update from RMNB Slack at 9:42 PM: Peter’s luggage may never return. That sucks so much I’ll cut him a break and won’t even mention our Oshie bet from last season.
  • Want to help Peter get some new clothes? Buy a Nate Schmidt poster.
