Caps hockey is back. The boys started the back end of the regular season off in Detroit for the last Capitals-Wings match up in Joe Louis Arena. The bye week rust was on display and I’m pretty sure the entire team was playing sunburned.
The first was not a great period for the team in white. No real sustained offensive zone pressure and a misfire on the man advantage. Danish forward Frans Nielsen put the Red Wings up 1-0 on Detroit’s lone power play of the period. McGriddles fans everywhere wept.
Tomas Tatar capitalized on a John Carlson turnover to put Detroit up 2-0, but the red hot, potentially pierced Zach Sanford brought the Caps within one before the end of forty minutes.
Petr Mrazek then tried to steal the show, making numerous ten-bellers before Daniel Winnik batted home a rebound to tie the game at 2 and send it to overtime.
Henrik Zetterberg with the shootout winner.
Red Wings beat Caps 3-2.
- The Red Wings power play is terrible this year, but they seemingly forget this fact when they’re playing the Capitals.
- Braden Holtby is now 0-5 in shootouts this year and the Red Wings are now 7-0 in the skills competition. That’s not fun.
- With this Capitals loss and Montreal’s loss, teams are now 3-13 the game back from their bye week.
- CSN showed us images of Esa Tikkanen doing the unforgettable in remembrance of Joe Louis Arena. I am now also blind.
- One thing that I won’t miss about the good ole Joe? Having play blocked at both ends of the ice by fans standing up in front of the camera.
- I think Petr Mrazek might be a Jedi. Lots of pucks around his crease mysteriously bouncing wide of pay-dirt. What say you?
- Zach Sanford has 4 goals in his last 3 professional hockey games. Are we sure he doesn’t play for the Calgary Flames, because he’s on fire. Ba-dum tss.
- Anyone seen Brooks Orpik completely lay out Steve Ott in that fight? That was Goldberg on Lesnar type domination.
- The Capitals power play was not very good. Had a couple chances late to tie the game up and could not convert.
- I have been incredibly sick for over a week now, so if this recap was even weirder than normal, I’m blaming it on that.
Joe B suit of the night
The end stretch of regular season hockey is upon us. Are you ready? I don’t think I am.
