Capitals re-sign Christian Djoos to two-year, $1.3 million contract

A day after the Capitals lost Nate Schmidt in the expansion draft, the team announced the re-signing of minor leaguer Christian Djoos, a potential replacement next season. Djoos’ contract, which has an AAV of $650,000, is two-way during the 2017-18 season and one-way during the 2018-19 season.

While Djoos is miniature, tiny, and could fit in your pocket, the 22-year-old Swede had a breakout season last year in the A. Djoos, the AHL’s player of the month for March, was nearly a point per game player, tallying 58 points in 66 games. He ranked first among AHL defensemen in assists and third overall in points. His 13 goals were a career high. He also was productive on the power play, scoring four times.

Entering his third professional season, Djoos has never played a NHL game though he did receive a callup in March. Djoos could potentially compete with Madison Bowey, Tyler Lewington, Jonas Siegenthaler, and Lucas Johansen for a roster spot next season.

More from the Capitals:

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Christian Djoos to a two-year, $1.3 million contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Djoos’ contract is two-way during the 2017-18 season and one-way during the 2018-19 season.

Djoos, 22, registered 58 points (13g, 45a) in 66 games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) last season, recording career highs in points, goals, assists and games played. The 6’0”, 164-pound defenseman ranked tied for first among AHL defensemen in assists in 2016-17 and ranked third in points. In addition, Djoos ranked second among Bears skaters in assists, third in points and tied for seventh in goals last season.

Djoos was selected by the Capitals in the seventh round, 195th overall, in the 2012 NHL Draft. The 6’, 161-pound defenseman has represented Sweden at two IIHF World Junior Championships (2013, 2014) and one IIHF U18 World Championship (2012), capturing a silver medal at each tournament. Christian Djoos is the son of former NHL defenseman Pars Djoos, who played for the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers.
