Max Scherzer and wife Erica are doing their part to help displaced pets from Hurricane Harvey

As Houston begins to recover from the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, many pets are seeking shelter.

Many of the Texas area refugee shelters available did not allow pets, and to escape the severe flooding, owners had no other option than to leave them behind. It’s hard to imagine the pain these families felt having to make this decision.

There are many ways to help Houston and a new one just appeared. The DC Human Rescue Alliance needs to clear their shelter to make room for the transfer of shelter pets from Texas. Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer and his wife, Erica, are making this easier. They are offering to cover all adoption feeds from Thursday through Sunday this week.

The Human Rescue Alliance is urging the people of the DC Metro area to adopt the more than 100 pets currently sheltered to make room for incoming animals.

“We have about 20 coming now, but we have been told that we should expect for that number to increase, especially cats, we expect a lot more cats,” Humane Rescue Alliance Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Shain told Fox 5 News. “So we are reminding people thinking about adopting to come on down.”

Adoption fees can range from $85 to $200 depending on the animal, but the Scherzer’s will cover any fee through the next four days. “They know how important it is we get these kennels empty,” Shain said.
