Nicklas Backstrom has spent most of his career setting up many of Alex Ovechkin’s 565 goals, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a sniper himself.
Monday, after scoring late in the first period against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Backstrom passed Bob Carpenter for sole possession of eighth place on the Capitals all-time scoring list. It was Backstrom’s first goal of the 2017-18 season and his 189th career tally of his career.

After taking a slick cross-ice pass from Andre Burakovsky, Backstrom showed off his patented patience, out-waiting an out of position Mikhail Sergachev before rifling a knuckle puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy.
The goal now puts Backstrom only seven goals away from owning the most Swedish Caps goals of all-time. Bengt Gustaffson scored 196 in his career.

Backstrom also assisted on both of TJ Oshie’s power-play goals giving him three points total on the evening.
