John Carlson assists on highlight-reel goal… for the wrong team

There’s one cardinal sin in hockey: never pass the puck in front of your own net unless you’re 100 percent sure you can make the play.

Caps defenseman John Carlson broke that rule against the Carolina Hurricanes, and he paid for it literally two seconds later.

As Carlson surveyed his options, he tried to make a lateral pass to Christian Djoos. Instead, he whiffed. Victor Rask collected the muffed puck and scored on Braden Holtby.

Whoops.

The goal gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead 5:04 into the game.

Caps Twitter did not handle the play well.

Just remember to keep the play in perspective and consider John’s entire body of work this season. Carlson is second in the league in points among all NHL defenseman (31 points) and ranks fifth in ice time per game (26:13). I’ll take that any day. He’s allowed to make a bad mistake or two.
