Olympic hockey and SNL’s Leslie Jones are a very good mix

Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones is an official NBC correspondent at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. On Sunday, Jones attended her first ever women’s hockey game, and the resulting commentary was hilarious.

As the game progressed, Jones came to the same conclusion that many of us do watching Team USA play. We’re all more than a little bit in love with Hilary Knight.

Jones kicked her coverage of the game off by introducing the team. Now would be a good time to warn you that there’s some very strong and enthusiastic language throughout.

We all know it’s not a hockey game until the “ice ninjas” come out to clean the ice.

As the game progressed, Jones assigned herself a role on her potential – or eventual – hockey team. A goon. And so the self-styled nickname “Penalty Box Jones” was born.

There were also some suggestions from Jones about how to improve the penalty box. What could possibly go wrong with a two-minute free for all in the sin bin?

But perhaps Jones’ idea of a “Penalty Box Concierge” might deescalate the situation more effectively. “I know she hit you in the face, but this is hockey and it’s going to happen sometimes. You need to calm down. Yeah, b#%$h, you got a minute 30 left.”

When it came to some of the finer rules of hockey, Jones got a little confused over when it was – and wasn’t – okay to pick your stick up from the ice. “I’m gonna blame the refs.”

Of course, when Team USA went up by five goals, Jones posed the question Capitals fans were probably asking themselves against the Blackhawks on Saturday. “Why are we still here? Why don’t they just call the game already?”

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the night was Jones’ escalating affection for Hilary Knight. It started off innocent enough, and… well. Got very intense, very fast. We can’t say we haven’t been there ourselves.

“Yo, Hilary Knight is so tall.”

“Let me tell you something, I want Hilary to get her Gold this year, man. She’s gonna f$%king get it, man. She is out there motivating my ass.”

“HILARY!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!! YOU’S A BAD MUTHAF^&%A!!! BEASTMODE!!!”

“Listen, let me tell you something. I am so in love with this girl. It’s ridiculous. I think I’m obsessed. It’s probably not healthy.”

“Hilary! Hilary, I f$%king love you, b#%$h. You are awesome.”

“Okay, Hilary. Imma say it again, I love you.”

All of Jones’ coverage didn’t go unnoticed by Hilary Knight. Following Team USA’s 5-0 win over Finland, Knight invited Jones to attend their Gold Medal game on Thursday (Korean time.)

Much to our disappointment, Leslie Jones will not be in attendance at the rematch against Canada, despite Knight securing tickets. According to Jones, she left Pyeongchang on Wednesday.

For now, we’ll end on the most accurate reaction to discovering and falling in love with hockey for the first time.

“Man, how the f$%k was I never into hockey? What the f$%k’s wrong with me?”
