Tom Wilson hit in face by slapshot

Tom Wilson left the ice in a hurry after a puck hit him in his face.

ALmost halfway into the second period, the Caps’ top line occupied the defensive zone as the Kings mounted an attack. High in the slot was Nicklas Backstrom, who stuck his stick out to intercept a slapshot from Kings defenseman Jake Muzzin. The puck bounced off Backstrom’s stick to hit Wilson in the face.

Wilson fell to the ice, holding his glove to his face. Referees blew the play dead as Wilson got up and hurried off the ice and down the tunnel.

Earlier that same shift, Wilson crashed into the boards behind Jonathan Quick’s net after a failed scoring drive.

12:23 AM update: The Capitals say Wilson is expected to return in the third period.

12:28 AM update: Wilson took the opening faceoff and showed off a mondo gash on his forehead.
